This paper describes an application of wavelet analysis for damage detection of a steel frame structure with bolted connections. The wavelet coefficients of the acceleration response for the healthy and loosened connection structure were calculated at each measurement point. The difference of the wavelet coefficients of the response of the healthy and loosened connection structure is selected as an indicator of the damage. At each node of structure the norm of the difference of the wavelet coefficients matrix is then calculated. The point for which the norm has the higher value is a candidate for location of the damage. The above procedure was experimentally verified on a laboratory-scale 2-meter-long steel frame. The structure consists of 11 steel beams forming a four-bay frame, which is subjected to impact loads using a modal hammer. The accelerations are measured at 20 different locations on the frame, including joints and beam elements. Two states of the structure are considered: healthy and damaged one. The damage is introduced by means of loosening two out of three bolts at one of the frame connections. Calculating the norm of the difference of the wavelet coefficients matrix at each node the higher value was found to be at the same location where the bolts were loosened. The presented experiment showed the effectiveness of the wavelet approach to damage detection of frame structures assembled using bolted connections.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is used to provide reliable information about the structure's integrity in near realtime following extreme incidents such as earthquakes, considering the inevitable aging and degradation that occurs in operating environments. This paper experimentally investigates an integrated wireless sensor network (Wi-SN) based monitoring technique for damage detection in concrete structures. An effective SHM technique can be used to detect potential structural damage based on post-earthquake data. Two novel methods are proposed for damage detection in reinforced concrete (RC) building structures including: (i) Jerk Energy Method (JEM), which is based on time-domain analysis, and (ii) Modal Contributing Parameter (MCP), which is based on frequency-domain analysis. Wireless accelerometer sensors are installed at each story level to monitor the dynamic responses from the building structure. Prior knowledge of the initial state (immediately after construction) of the structure is not required in these methods. Proposed methods only use responses recorded during ambient vibration state (i.e., operational state) to estimate the damage index. Herein, the experimental studies serve as an illustration of the procedures. In particular, (i) a 3-story shear-type steel frame model is analyzed for several damage scenarios and (ii) 2-story RC scaled down (at 1/6th) building models, simulated and verified under experimental tests on a shaking table. As a result, in addition to the usual benefits like system adaptability, and cost-effectiveness, the proposed sensing system does not require a cluster of sensors. The spatial information in the real-time recorded data is used in global damage identification stage of SHM. Whereas in next stage of SHM, the damage is detected at the story level. Experimental results also show the efficiency and superior performance of the proposed measuring techniques.

Damage location and extent could be detected by the inverse analysis on dynamic response of the damaged structure. In general, detection of damage location is possible by the observation of the mode shape difference between undamaged and damaged structure and assessment of stiffness reduction is possible by the observation of the natural frequency difference of them. The study on damage detection by the dynamic response in civil structures is reported enough and in practical use, but in building structures it is reported seldom due to several problems. The purpose of this study is to present the damage detection method on shear building structures by mode shape. The damage location index using 1st mode shape is observed theoretically to find out damage location. The damage detection method is applied to numerical analysis model such as MATLAB and MIDAS GENw for the verification. Finally the shaking table test on 3 story shear building is performed for the examination of the damage detection method. In shaking table results, as the story stiffness decrease by 25% the 1st mode frequency increase by 12%, and the damage location index represents minus at damaged story.
A good understanding of normal modal variability of civil structures due to varying environmental conditions such as temperature and wind is important for reliable performance of vibration-based damage detection methods. This paper addresses the quantification of wind-induced modal variability of a cable-stayed bridge making use of one-year monitoring data. In order to discriminate the wind-induced modal variability from the temperature-induced modal variability, the one-year monitoring data are divided into two sets: the first set includes the data obtained under weak wind conditions (hourly-average wind speed less than 2 m/s) during all four seasons, and the second set includes the data obtained under both weak and strong (typhoon) wind conditions during the summer only. The measured modal frequencies and temperatures of the bridge obtained from the first set of data are used to formulate temperature-frequency correlation models by means of artificial neural network technique. Before the second set of data is utilized to quantify the wind-induced modal variability, the effect of temperature on the measured modal frequencies is first eliminated by normalizing these modal frequencies to a reference temperature with the use of the temperature-frequency correlation models. Then the wind-induced modal variability is quantitatively evaluated by correlating the normalized modal frequencies for each mode with the wind speed measurement data. It is revealed that in contrast to the dependence of modal frequencies on temperature, there is no explicit correlation between the modal frequencies and wind intensity. For most of the measured modes, the modal frequencies exhibit a slightly increasing trend with the increase of wind speed in statistical sense. The relative variation of the modal frequencies arising from wind effect (with the maximum hourly-average wind speed up to 17.6 m/s) is estimated to range from 1.61% to 7.87% for the measured 8 modes of the bridge, being notably less than the modal variability caused by temperature effect.
Circular plates with holes are extensively used in mechanical components. The existence of a hole in a circular plate results in a significant change in the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure. Especially if the hole is located eccentrically, the vibration behavior of these structures is expected to deviate significantly from that of a plate with a concentric hole. In addition, if the plate is in contact with or submerged in fluid, the situation is more complex. Therefore, in this study, an analytical method to determine the modal characteristics of a plate submerged in fluid is developed based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method and is verified by the finite element analysis using a commercial program. Also, the relationship between parameter variations and vibration modes is investigated. These results can be used as guidance for the modal analysis and damage detection of a circular plate with a hole.

The use of system identification approaches for damage detection has been expanded in recent years owing to the advancements in data acquisition system andinformation processing techniques. Soft computing techniques such as neural networks and genetic algorithm have been utilized increasingly for this end due to their excellent pattern recognition capability. In this study, damage detection of bridge structures using neural networks technique based on the modal properties is presented, which can effectively consider the modeling uncertainty in the analysis model from which the training patterns are to be generated. The differences or the ratios of the mode shape components between before and after damage are used as the input to the neural networks in this method, since they are found to be less sensitive to the modeling errors than the mode shapes themselves. Two numerical example analyses on a simple beam and a multi-girder bridge are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.
Structural health monitoring has increasingly been a focus within the civil engineering research community over the last few decades. With increasing application of sensor networks in large structures and infrastructure systems, effective use and development of robust algorithms to analyze large volumes of data and to extract the desired features has become a challenging problem. In this paper, we grasp some precautions and key points of the signal processing approach, wavelet, establish a relative reliable framework, and analyze three problems that require attention when applying wavelet based damage detection approach. The cases studies how to use optimal scales for extracting mode shapes and modal curvatures in a reinforced concrete beam and how to effectively identify damages using maximum curves of wavelet coefficient differences. Moreover, how to make a recognition based on the wavelet multi-resolution analysis, wavelet packet energy, and fuzzy sets is a meaningful topic that has been addressed in this work. The relative systematic work that compasses algorithms, structures and evaluation paves a way to a framework regarding effective structural health monitoring, orientation, decision and action.
System identification is a fundamental step towards the application of structural health monitoring and damage detection techniques. On this respect, the development of evolved identification strategies is a priority for obtaining reliable and repeatable baseline modal parameters of an undamaged structure to be adopted as references for future structural health assessments. The paper presents the identification of the modal parameters of the Guangzhou New Television Tower, China, using a data-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-data) approach complemented with an appropriate automatic mode selection strategy which proved to be successful in previous literature studies. This well-known approach is based on a clustering technique which is adopted to discriminate structural modes from spurious noise ones. The method is applied to the acceleration measurements made available within the task I of the ANCRiSST benchmark problem, which cover 24 hours of continuous monitoring of the structural response under ambient excitation. These records are then subdivided into a convenient number of data sets and the variability of modal parameter estimates with ambient temperature and mean wind velocity are pointed out. Both 10 minutes and 1 hour long records are considered for this purpose. A comparison with finite element model predictions is finally carried out, using the structural matrices provided within the benchmark, in order to check that all the structural modes contained in the considered frequency interval are effectively identified via SSI-data.

The objective of this paper is to develop on-line system parameter estimation and damage detection technique from the response measurements through using the Recursive Covariance-Driven Stochastic Subspace identification (RSSI-COV) approach. To reduce the effect of noise on the results of identification, discussion on the pre-processing of data using recursive singular spectrum analysis (rSSA) is presented to remove the noise contaminant measurements so as to enhance the stability of data analysis. Through the application of rSSA-SSI-COV to the vibration measurement of bridge during scouring experiment, the ability of the proposed algorithm was proved to be robust to the noise perturbations and offers a very good online tracking capability. The accuracy and robustness offered by rSSA-SSI-COV provides a key to obtain the evidence of imminent bridge settlement and a very stable modal frequency tracking which makes it possible for early warning. The peak values of the identified $1^{st}$ mode shape slope ratio has shown to be a good indicator for damage location, meanwhile, the drastic movements of the peak of $2^{nd}$ mode slope ratio could be used as another feature to indicate imminent pier settlement.
