  • This paper discusses 2D lattice models of beams for simulating the fracture of brittle materials. A simulation of an experiment on a connote beam subjected to bending, in which two overlapping cracks occur, is used to study the effect of individual beam characteristics and different arrangements of the beams in the overall lattice. It was found that my regular orientation of the beams influences the resulting crack patterns. Methods to implement a wide range of poisson's ratios are also developed, the use of the lattice to study arbitrary micro-structures is outlined The crack pattern that n obtained with lattice m in good agreement with the experimental results. Also, numerical simulations of the tests were performed by means of a lattice model, and non-integer dimensions were measured on the predicted lattice damage patterns.

  • A simple and robust methodology is presented to determine the location and amount of crack in beam like structures based on the incremental particle swarm optimization technique. A comparison is made for assessing the performance of standard particle swarm optimization and the incremental particle swarm optimization technique for detecting crack in structural members. The objective function is formulated using the measured natural frequency of the intact structure and the frequency obtained from the finite element simulation. The outcomes of the simulated results demonstrate that the developed method is capable of detecting and estimating the extent of damages with satisfactory precision.

  • HDPE smooth and textured GMs were cut into dumbbell shape and notched where depth of the notch produced a ligament thickness of 90% to 10% of the nominal thickness of the specimen at 10% interval. Yield stress and elongation were measured of those samples and plotted on Graph. Yield stress and elongation at yield point decreases gradually as the notch depth is increased. Both installations damaged and notched GMs were used to understand stress crack behavior. Intact sample were notched in such a manner that the depth of notch produced a ligament thickness of 80% of the nominal thickness of the specimen. Installation damaged samples were not notched. Stress Crack Resistance behavior was observed using NCTL Test at $50{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ at different yield stresses immerging with pH 4 and pH 12 buffer solutions. Significant difference was observed in both cases.

  • Mass concreting in cold weather environment should be focused on the control of thermal crack caused by high hydration heat rather than curing method for protecting from frost damage at early age because the thermal stress have much influence on the quality of structure placed in cold weather. Therefore, in this paper, the control of thermal crack of mass concrete in cold weather environment are dealt with preparing the practice plan for mass concrete and placing the concrete according to the plactice plan. According to the results, we can obtain good quality mass concrete without thermal crack caused by the difference of temperature between inner part and outer part.

  • Problem of repairing by boring is that it deteriorates stabelety and durability of structure by permeation of seawater from underneath after damage and repair of reinforcing rod regarding of spot. The purpose of this study is to improve the porblem by using the repair method of general boring to mend the of large mat basis. Direction of thes experiment is to apply the new repair material and the method to control the blazing fire factor caused by the crack from the foundation of large mat and also to estimate it's integrity. New method of construction is method of contruction that do speace scurity in vertical drilling and bottom useing water jet. New material used bantonite and rubberized asphalt. Test result existent repair method of construction large size mat basis perforation is difficult and reinforcing rod can be damaged coule there were a lot of problems with re-water leakage of crack repair region, but overcomes existent short coming by method that apply in this study.

  • A hot press method was used to create the optimal fabrication condition for a Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) composite. The bonding strength between the matrix and the reinforcement within the SMA composite by the hot press method was more increased by cold rolling. In this study, the objective was to develop an on-line monitoring system in order to prevent the crack initiation and propagation by shape memory effect in SMA composite. Shape memory effect was used to prevent the SMA composite from crack propagation. For this system an optimal AE parameter should be determined according to the degree of damage and crack initiation. When the SMA composite was heated by the plate heater attached at the composite, the propagating cracks could be controlled by the compressive force of SMA.

  • Suspension system is one of the most important components indespensible for stability and reliability of automobiles. The demands to more safe and durable suspension system have been increased as the automobiles get popular and improve in quality. The crack in the coil spring of the suspension system produced during manufacturing may grow under a fatigue load and cause a severe safety problems which lead to a catastrophic damage to the passengers. Many conventional NDT techniques including ET, RT, and UT are less sensitive or hard to apply to detect the surface breaking crack in the suspension coils partly because the techniques are point-to-point measurement methods, thus take too long time to inspect the coil spring longer than 1m. Contrary to this, Lamb wave technique is full-field measurement method that make it possible to examine the whole coil spring in real time. In this paper, the Lamb wave is applied to the coil spring to investigate the possibility to detect the cracks on the surface of the coil spring.

  • A crack emanating from an internal electrode or a conducting damage path in ferroelectric ceramic actuators is analyzed. The boundary of the domain switching zone near the edge of the internal electrode in a ceramic multilayer actuator is determined based on the nonlinear electric theory. The stress intensity factor induced by a ferroelectric domain switching under small scale conditions is numerically obtained for flaws of various sizes near the electrode edge. It is found that stress intensity factor near the crack tip depends on the material property of the electrical nonlinearity.

  • This paper is to investigate the behavior of linear static structure stress, the fatigue and experimental shock fracture far engine base in the Auxiliary Power Unit to resolve its restricted electrical power problem. The shock fracture test was experimentally made under MIL standard criteria. The numerical results by finite element method had a good agreement with those from the shock test. The design data of predicting the fracture at the initial crack and the damage behavior of structure with shock and vibration load in the battle field can be obtained from shock test. In the functional shock test, the crack at the side parts of the engine base was found at peak acceleration of 40g.

  • The R-curve for in situ-toughened SiC-30 wt% TiC composites was estimated by the indentation-strength method and compared to that of monolithic SiC with toughened microstructure. Both materials exhibited rising R-curve behavior. The SiC-TiC composites, however, displayed better damage tolerance and higher resistance to crack growth. Total volume fractions of SiC key grains, which take part in toughening mechanisms such as crack bridging and crack deflection, were 0.607 for monolithic SiC ceramics and 0.614 for SiC-TiC composites. From the microstructural characterization and the residual stress calculation, it was inferred that this superior performance of SiC-TiC composites can be attributed to stress-induced microcracking at heterophase (SiC/TiC) boundaries and some contribution from carck deflection by TiC grains.
