  • Due to their intrinsic anisotropy, composite materials show quite complicated damage mechanism with their fiber orientation and stacking sequence and especially, their fatigue damage process is sequential occurrence of matrix cracking, delamination and fiber breakage. In the study, to propose new model capable of describing damage mechanism under fatigue loading, fatigue analysis of composite laminates based on damage mechanics, are performed. The average stress is disassembled with stress components of matrix, fiber and interlaminar interface through stress analysis. Each stress components are used to assess static damage analysis based on continuum damage mechanics (C.D.M.). Fatigue damage curves are obtained from hysteresis loop and assessed by the fatigue damage analysis. Then, static and fatigue damage analysis are combined. Expected results such as stress-cycle relation are verified by the experimental results of fatigue tests.

  • Quantifying the amount of damage of structures under earthquakes is an interesting issue that researchers have attended on and have presented some damage indices. Whereas a lot of damage indices have been introduced based on nonlinear dynamic analysis, computational effort, the calculus complicacy and time-consuming of this analysis are the main drawbacks to widespread use of these indices. The objective of this study is to quantify the damage of Shear Wall Reinforced Concrete Frames (SWRCFs) based on pushover analysis as a procedure that can reflect the behavior of structures from elastic to collapse. For this purpose, firstly, several SWRCFs are designed and the capacity spectrum of each one is achieved via pushover analysis. After that, the static damage indices of the designed frames are obtained. Then, nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed on these frames and the Park and Ang damage index as the basis damage criterion is achieved. Afterward, some relations are presented to predict the dynamic damage of these frames via pushover analysis. Eventually, to confirm the validity of the proposed relations, the values of Park and Ang damage index of three new SWRCFs are acquired once utilizing nonlinear dynamic analysis and again applying the introduced relations. Outcomes prove the validity of some presented damage indices.

  • This study proposes two new approaches for identifying damage patterns in a holed CFRP cross-ply laminate using an embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor. It was experimentally confirmed that the reflection spectrum from the embedded FBG sensor was significantly deformed as the damage near the hole (i.e. splits, transverse cracks and delamination) extended. The damage patterns were predicted using forward analysis (a damage analysis and an optical analysis) with strain estimation and the proposed damage-identification method as well as the forward analysis only. Forward analysis with strain estimation provided the most accurate damage-pattern estimation and the highest computational efficiency. Furthermore, the proposed damage identification significantly reduced computation time with the equivalent accuracy compared to the conventional identification procedure, by using damage analysis as the initial estimation.

  • A new structural damage index for seismic fragility analysis of reinforced concrete columns is developed based on a local tensile damage variable of the Lee and Fenves plastic-damage model. The proposed damage index is formulated from the nonlinear regression of experimental column test data. In contrast to the response-based damage index, the proposed damage index is well-defined in the form of a single monotonically-increasing function of the volume weighted average of local damage distribution, and provides the necessary computability and objectivity. It is shown that the present damage index can be appropriately zoned to be used in seismic fragility analysis. An application example in the computational seismic fragility evaluation of reinforced concrete columns validates the effectiveness of the proposed damage index.

  • Under sever earthquake, structural elements or structures may sustain a large number of inelastic excursions. To predict seismic damage of the structures with accuracy, much research for general definition of structural collapse and seismic damage analysis is required. The ductility method, the energy method and Park and Ang method for seismic damage analysis of structural elements and structures are compared in this paper. Also, the seismic damage analysis for system-level of structure is carried out using the ESDOF-system method and Powell method. To compare tendency of the seismic damage analysis using each methods, example analysis is accomplished for several cases of different structures and different earthquake excitation.

  • Fragility analysis is widely used for the seismic safety evaluation of a structure. In fragility analysis, damage evaluation is a crucial factor. Most of the present fragility analyses use the representative responses such as displacement and absorbed hysteretic energy as a tool of damage evaluation. But damage evaluation method that can represent the local damage of a structure is required in the case of piers of which the local damage can cause the whole failure of bridge system. Therefore this study proposes a damage index, which can represent the distribution and magnitude of local damage by using the Lee and Fenves'plastic-damage model. Using the proposed damage index, fragility curves and damage probability matrix of pier are produced and fragility analysis is performed.

  • This study introduces the fragility analysis method for the safety evaluation of reinforced concrete pier subject to earthquake. Damage probability is calculated instead of the failure probability from definition of the damage state in the fragility curve. Not only the damage model determined by the response of structure subject to earthquake, but also the plastic-damage model which can represent the local damage is applied to fragility analysis. The evaluation method of damage state by damage variable in global structure is defined by this procedure. This study introduces the fragility analysis method considering the features of nonlinear time history behavior of reinforced concrete element and the plastic behavior of materials. At last, This study gives one of the approach method for seismic margin evaluation with the result of fragility analysis to design seismic load.

  • In rough seas, bow-flare regions of the sea-going ships are subject to high impact pressures due to the bow-flare slamming and panting. And many ships suffer structural damages in that region, even though they were built under the bow structure strengthening rules of the ship classes. So, a new design method for bow-flare structure is highly required. In this paper, bow-flare damage analysis is performed for 17 ships (total number of damage/non-damage data is 782). Based on this analysis, a new design standard and method for bow-flare structure (shell plate, frame and web frame) is proposed. 80.4% of the present damage/non-damage data were well-explained by this new design standard.

  • Structures under high temperature may have creep behavior and fatigue behavior. Durability study of the structures need the damage analysis with the creep-fatigue effects. In this paper, the damage analysis is studied for a turbine blade in the turbopump for a liquid rocket engine which is operated under high temperature condition. First of all, the load cycle is required for defining the operational characteristics of turbopump. The thermal stress analysis is done for a turbine blade of the turbopump. The stress analysis results are used to judge damage due to the creep and the fatigue. The strain-life method with miner rule is used for fatigue damage analysis. The Larson-Miller parameter master curve and robinson rule are used for the creep damage analysis. The linear damage summation method is used to consider creep-fatigue effects of turbopump turbine. Finally, the analysis results for fatigue and the influence are compared to figure out the damage phenomenon of the turbopump turbine.

  • On November 15, 2017, an earthquake($M_L5.4$) occurred in Pohang. Pohang earthquake was the second largest earthquake since earthquake was observed in Korea, but structural damage caused by earthquake was biggest. Structural damage caused by Pohang earthquake was mainly caused by schools and pilotis, above all damage to pilotis was outstanding. This is because area where pilotis structures are concentrated is located near epicenter, and seismic performance of pilotis structures is not excellent compared with general structures. In this study, described results of damage investigation and analysis of damage causes through analysis of pilotis Structures on 131 buildings that were investigated immediately after Pohang earthquake. In addition, cause of damage was analyzed through analysis of seismic wave. Investigation site was selected to Jangseong-dong, where damage occurred in large numbers. Damage level was classified into A, B, and C level by measuring residual crack width and story drift of structural members.
