To secure quality of dam construction needs appropriate construction duration. Tight construction schedule may have negative influence on infrastructure quality, work safety and maintenance cost. It is necessary to reflect proper construction duration in the planning phase. There have been standards for estimating construction duration of building and industrial complex development but dam construction have not. In order to estimate construction duration of CFRD, feasible study reports and design reports were analyzed to acquire available information. After that, considering on construction duration methods such as comparison with similar cases, approximate estimating formula, approximate quantity assumption were adapted to Critical Path items. Hence, this study present framework for construction duration estimating of CFRD in the planning phase. This framework can be applied other types of dam along the same line.
An anisotropic damage mechanics approach is introduced which models the static and dynamic behavior of mass concrete in 3D space. The introduced numerical approach is able to model non-uniform cracking within the cracked element due to cracking in Gaussian points of elements. The validity of the proposed model is considered using available experimental and theoretical results under the static and dynamic loads. No instability and stress locking is observed in the conducted analyses. The Morrow Point dam is analyzed including dam-reservoir interaction effects to consider the nonlinear seismic behavior of the dam. It is found that the resulting crack profiles are in good agreement with those obtained from the smeared crack approach. It is concluded that the proposed model can be used in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of concrete dams in 3D space and enables engineers to define the damage level of these infrastructures. The performance level of the considered system is used to assess the static and seismic safety using the defined performance based criteria.

Sixteen percent of a total of 18,000 dam facilities in Korea are reported to suffer problems related to seepage. It has also been observed that the natural frequency of torrential rainfall has increased quite significantly in recent years. Seepage in man-made structures combined with natural phenomenon may make the risk of dam failure higher, and can even lead to disasters for the people residing in downstream area. Thus, the social demands for the technology to prevent these disasters are higher than ever. In this contribution, we provide a brief review of technologies that are used to evaluate the structural safety of dams. We also discuss the results of three case studies where geophysical exploration methods (e.g. resistivity survey) were employed to find possible seepage zones of dam structures.
In this study, a one-dimensional numerical model was constructed to propose a flood control plan linked with the dam and river basin for the flood events of the Seomjin River in 2020. The flood level reduction of the downstream river was tested based on a scenario operation of the Seomjingang Dam and was also analyzed when a storage pocket was newly constructed as one of the river basin measures. It was confirmed that Seomjingang Dam's flood control capacity would be increased if the flood limit level was drastically lowered from the current EL. 196.5 m to EL. 188.0 m. In addition, if the upper area of the (old) Geumgok Bridge (which suffered great damage due to the loss of the levee) is used as a storage pocket, it would be effective in preventing floods in the lower area of it. In the era of the climate crisis, more integrated flood management is needed and basic river management must be observed.

Phenomena of hydraulic transient such as water hammer should be analyzed to design the pipeline systems effectively in dam. Surge tanks generally are used to reduce change in pressure caused by hydraulic transient from load changes on the turbines. In this study, the appropriate scale of surge tank with chamber is investigated for dam safety management. The variation of water level in the surge tank are computed using governing equation. Using the Thoma-Jaeger's stability condition, static and dynamic stability are investigate for the cases of flood water level, normal high water level, rated water level and low water level. Finally appropriate diameters of shaft and chamber are determined in the surge tank with chamber.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior and to study the safety evaluation of the Unmun Dam located in Cheongdo-Gun of GyeongBuk Province, Korea. For this purpose, soil analyses including boring data, geophysical surveys and monitoring the buried geotechnical gauges, such as pore-pressure gauge, earth-pressure gauge, displacement gauge, multi-layer settlement gauge, leakage flow-meter, were conducted.
In addition to these data, numerical analyses of behavior of dam were performed to predict and to compare the data which were obtained from the above methods. Since many defects, such as gravel and weathered rock blocks in the dam core, and lots of amounts of leakage, by boring analyses were found, reinforcement by compaction grouting system (CGS) has been conducted in some range of dam. Some geotechnical gauge data were also used to confirm the effects of reinforcement. Analyses of monitoring the data of geotechnical gauges buried in the dam, such as pore-pressure gauge, earth-pressure gauge, displacement gauge, multi-layer settlement gauge, and leakage flow-meter shows the load transfer of dam and the possibility of hydraulic
fracturing. As a conclusion, some problems in the dam found. Especially, the dam near spillway shows the high possibility of leakage. It should be pointed out that only the left side of he dam has not a leakage problem. As a whole, the dam has problems of weakness, because of unsatisfactory construction. It is strongly recommended that highly intensive monitoring is required.
Today, many important concrete face rockfill dams (CFRDs) have been built on the world, and some of these important structures are located on the strong seismic regions. In this reason, examination and monitoring of these water construction's seismic behaviour is very important for the safety and future of these dams. In this study, the nonlinear seismic behaviour of Ilısu CFR dam which was built in Turkey in 2017, is investigated for various reservoir water heights taking into account 1995 Kobe near-fault and far-fault ground motions. Three dimensional (3D) finite difference model of the dam is created using the FLAC3D software that is based on the finite difference method. The most suitable mesh range for the 3D model is chosen to achieve the realistic numerical results. Mohr-Coulomb nonlinear material model is used for the rockfill materials and foundation in the seismic analyses. Moreover, Drucker-Prager nonlinear material model is considered for the concrete slab to represent the nonlinearity of the concrete. The dam body, foundation and concrete slab constantly interact during the lifetime of the CFRDs. Therefore, the special interface elements are defined between the dam body-concrete slab and dam body-foundation due to represent the interaction condition in the 3D model. Free field boundary condition that was used rarely for the nonlinear seismic analyses, is considered for the lateral boundaries of the model. In addition, quiet artificial boundary condition that is special boundary condition for the rigid foundation in the earthquake analyses, is used for the bottom of the foundation. The hysteric damping coefficients are separately calculated for all of the materials. These special damping values is defined to the FLAC3D software using the special fish functions to capture the effects of the variation of the modulus and damping ratio with the dynamic shear-strain magnitude. Total 4 different reservoir water heights are taken into account in the seismic analyses. These water heights are empty reservoir, 50 m, 100 m and 130 m (full reservoir), respectively. In the nonlinear seismic analyses, near-fault and far-fault ground motions of 1995 Kobe earthquake are used. According to the numerical analyses, horizontal displacements, vertical displacements and principal stresses for 4 various reservoir water heights are evaluated in detail. Moreover, these results are compared for the near-fault and far-faults earthquakes. The nonlinear seismic analysis results indicate that as the reservoir height increases, the nonlinear seismic behaviour of the dam clearly changes. Each water height has different seismic effects on the earthquake behaviour of Ilısu CFR dam. In addition, it is obviously seen that near-fault earthquakes and far field earthquakes create different nonlinear seismic damages on the nonlinear earthquake behaviour of the dam.
In this study, the behavior of pollutant was calculated at Paldang reservior according to several scenarios of the accidental water pollution by means of the numerical models for forecasting water quality. Also managemental plans for situation of the accidental water pollution happening at Paldang watershed were simulated. According to the simulating results, a plan of increase of discharge at Cheongpyeong dam reduced the peak concentration of pollutants, whereas extended the time for stopping water intake. Another plan, drop of water elevation at Paldang dam, decreased seriously the time for stopping water intake although there were a little effect to decrease the peak concentration. Thus it was concluded that appropriate combinations of the plans for the increase discharge and the dropping water elevation should be used to deal with the accidental water pollution at Paldang watershed.

This study was carried out for the stability analysis of earth dam by the variation of compaction density. The test samples were taken from five kinds of soil used for banking material and the degree of compaction for this samples were chosen 100, 95, 90, 85, and 80 percent. The stability problems were analysed by the settlement and camber( extra banking) of dam, strength parameter and dam slope, and coefficient of permeability and seapage flow through dam body. The results of the stability analysis of earth dam are as follows. 1. The more the fine particle increases and lower the compaction degree becomes, the lower the preconsolidation load becomes but the compression index becomes higher. 2. Sixty to eighty percent of settlement of dam occurs during the construction period and the settlement ratio after completion of dam is inversly proportional to the degree of compaction. 3. The camber of dam has heigher value in condition that it has more fine particle(N) and heigher dam height(H) with the relation of H= e(aN-bH-e). 4. The cohesion(C) decreases in proportion to compaction degree(D) and fine particle(N) with the relation of C= aD+ bN-c, but the internal friction angle is almost constant regardless of change of degree of compaction. 5. In fine soil, strength parameter from triaxial compression test is smaller than that from direct shear test but, they are almost same in coarse soil regardless of the test method. 6. The safety factor of the dam slope generally decreases in proportion to cohesion and degree of compaction but, in case of coarse soil, it is less related to the degree of compaction and is mainly afected by internal friction angle. 7. Soil permeability(K) decreases by the increases of the degree of compaction and fine particle with relation of K=e(a-bl)-cN) 8. The more compaction thickness is, the less vertical permeability (Kv) is but the more h6rzontal permeability (KH) is, and ratio of Kv versus KH is largest in range from 85 to 90 percent of degree of corn paction. 9. With the compaction more than 85 percent and coefficient of permeability less than ${\alpha}$X 10-$^3$cm/sec, the earth dam is generally safe from the piping action.

As a fundamental research to establish a safety operation plan for irrigation dams, this study presents hydrologic analysis conducted in Sungju Dam watershed based on various rainfall data. Especially those reservoirs without flood control feature are widely exposed to the risk of flooding, a safe and optimized operation program need to be improved against arbitrary flooding. In this study, reservoir routing program was developed and simulated for reservoir runoff estimation using WMS hydrology model. The model simulated the variations of reservoir elevation under the condition of open or closed emergency gate. In case of closed emergency gate, water surface elevation was given as 193.15 m, and this value exceeds the dam crest height by 1.65 m. When the emergency gate is open, the increment of water surface elevation is given as 192.01 m, and this value exceeds dam crest height by 0.57 m. As an alternative plan, dam height increase can be considered for flood control under the PMP (Probable Maximum Precipitation) condition. Since the dam size is relatively small compare to the watershed area, sound protection can be expected from the latter option rather than emergency gate installation.
