Dietary Patterns in Relation to Prostate Cancer in Iranian Men: A Case-Control Study

  • Background: Prostate cancer is the most frequently occurring cancer among males in economically developed countries. Among the several risk factors that have been suggested, only age, ethnicity, diabetes, and family history of prostate cancer are well-established and primary prevention of this disease is limited. Prior studies had shown that dietary intake could be modified to reduce cancer risk. We conducted a hospital-based, casecontrol study to examine the association between dietary patterns and prostate cancer risk in Iran. Materials and Methods: A total of fifty patients with prostate cancer and a hundred controls underwent face-to-face interviews. Factor analysis was used to determine the dietary patterns. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: We defined two major dietary patterns in this population: 'western diet'(high in sweets and desserts, organ meat, snacks, tea and coffee, French fries, salt, carbonated drinks, red or processed meat) and 'healthy diet' (high in legumes, fish, dairy products, fruits and fruit juice, vegetables, boiled potatoes, whole cereal and egg). Both Healthy and western pattern scores were divided into two categories (based on medians). Higher scores on Healthy pattern was marginally significantly related to decreased risk of prostate cancer (above median vs below median, OR =0.4, 95%CI=0.2-1.0). An increased risk of prostate cancer was observed with the higher scores on the Western pattern (above median vs below median, OR=4.0, 95%CI=1.5-11.0). Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that diet might be associated with prostate cancer among Iranian males.

젊은 여성의 식습관 및 건강관련 생활습관과 피부건강과의 관련성 연구 (Relationships of Food Habits & Life Style and Skin Health of Young Females)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of food habits and life style on the skin health of young Korean females in their late teens and twenties. The study focused on facial skin and used a self-administered questionnaire survey, an examination of skin type, and pH tests. More than half of the females had combination skin type or pH level higher than 5.8 which is regarded as normal. The variables that turned out to significantly (p<0.05) effect their facial skin types were body mass index (BMI), the type of residence, the amount of water intake, whether or not they intake drinks, the frequency and amount of alcohol drinking, favorite foods as side dishes at meals, intake frequency of fruit, the dairy, seaweed, and fast food, the frequency of washing their faces per day, the method of how they used water during face washing, whether or not they had professional skin care, and whether or not they wore color make up. The variables of the females' age, BMI, the amount of alcohol drinking, the frequency and duration of exercise, the controlling methods of stress, their favorite foods as side dishes at meals, and the intake frequency of soy products or animal foods significantly affected their facial pH levels (p<0.05). The results of this study indicate that some food habits and life styles are significantly related with facial skin health. More importantly BMI and favorite foods as side dishes during daily food intake could have remarkable effects on facial skin health.

경기지역 일부 대학생들의 식생활 관련 심혈관대사질환 건강위험도 평가 (Diet-Related Health Risk Appraisal for Cardiometabolic Diseases of the College Students in Gyunggi-do)

  • This study was conducted to assess diet-related health appraisal for cardiometabolic diseases of the college students in Gyeonggi-do. The survey data obtained by 21 questionnaire(6 general characteristics and 15 food behaviors) given to 90 students, 41 males and 49 females. The average age of the subjects was 22.2 years old for the male students and 20.9 years old for the female students(p<0.001). Among the subjects, 35 males and 47 females' height, weight and percentage of body fat were measured using bioelectrical impedance(Inbody 720). The average height, weight, Body Mass Index and percent body fat of the subjects were 175.7cm, 69.5kg, 22.4 and 16.9% for males and 162.0cm, 53.5kg, 20.4 and 27.7% for females, respectively (p<0.001). Male students had a higher prevalence of smoking compared with female students(p<0.001). Females had higher intake frequency of fruits than males(p<0.05). Males had higher intake frequency of fishes than females(p<0.05). Male students had higher number of side dishes at mealtime compared with female students. There were no difference between the sexes in intake frequency of dairy, ramyeon, rice with whole grain, 3-layered pork belly, processed meat, soft drinks, soy products and fast food. Also, there were no difference between sexes in number of vegetables per day, frequency of eating out, prevalence of eating kimchi at every meal. Cardiometabolic risks were calculated by 'Diet-related health risk appraisal'. Male students had higher cardiometabolic risks(hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, abdominal obesity) than female students(p<0.001). Appropriate nutritional education for college male students may help to prevent cardiometabolic diseases in the future.

운동 여부에 따른 성인 남자의 식습관, 식행동 및 건강관심도에 관한 연구 (A Study on Dietary Behaviors, and the Health of Male Adults according to Their Exercising Habits)

  • This study is conducted to compare the problems affecting dietary habits and health status between a long-term exercise group and non-exercise group of males older than 50 years. Most subjects of the two groups consider regular exercise to be the most important factor for maintaining health, and recognize hypertension as the number one concern. The most common nutritional supplement among subjects is multiple vitamins, and sleeping time range from 6~8 hours. Breakfast fasting rate was 15.9% among non-exercise group (NEG), where overeating and eating out rates were higher among exercise group (EG) when comparing to NEG. Fasting rates of breakfast, and consumption rates of milk and dairy products, vegetables such as kimchi, and fruits and fruit juices are higher among the EG. Overeating and eating out rates are lower among NEG, whereas eating rates of proteins like meat, fish, eggs, beans, fried foods, high-fat meats carbonated drinks, ice cream, and salt intakes are higher. Rates of health, dietary habits, and nutrient intakes are higher among EG. Energy intakes among the two groups were below the standard level, Vitamin $B_2$ intake is low in EG, and folic acid and calcium intakes were higher in NEG. The exercising group care more about health, eating habits and nutrient intakes, and low smoking rates are being observed. Thus, specific dietary improvement programs for adult men, are required, and it is necessary to consider the practice of nutrition education.

중학생의 가공식품에 대한 선호도와 식품${\cdot} $영양표시에 대한 인식도 (Processed Food Preferences and Food and Nutrition Labeling Perceptions of Mddle School Students)

  • The objectives of this study were to determine the preferences and consideration factors for selecting processed foods, in middle school students as well as their perceptions on food and nutrition labeling student. Middle school students in the Seoul area were surveyed from October to November, 2006. The results are summarized as follows: the preferred processed foods included 'drinks' (3.85), 'noodles' (3.81), 'biscuits and bread' (3.80), 'milk and dairy products' (3.71), and 'meat and meat products' (3.60). The most important consideration factors in selecting processed foods were 'expiration date' (4.45), 'taste' (4.34), and 'price' (4.08). The two main reasons for eating processed foods were 'delicious' (43.1%) and 'convenient' (33.9%). Food labels were identified 'sometimes' (34.5%), 'rarely' (31.2%), and 'almost never' (18.6%). The primary reason for examining a food label was 'to confirm the expiration date' (52.6%). The main reason for not reviewing a food's label was 'habitual purchase' (57.8%). Nutrition labels were identified 'rarely' (33.4%), 'almost never' (24.7%), and 'sometimes' (23.5%). The reasons for examining nutrition labels included 'to confirm a high proportion of nutritive substances' (26.5%), 'boredom' (24.2%), 'for weight control' (23.5%), and 'to improve health' (18.1%). The main reason for not examining a food's nutrition label was 'not interested' (56.5%).

Associations between dietary patterns and screen time among Korean adolescents

  • Data are limited on the association between dietary patterns and screen time among Korean adolescents. The present study identified dietary patterns of 691 adolescents, aged 13-18 years, who had participated in the Third Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES III) and analyzed their associations with screen time. Screen time was defined as the time spent watching TV, using a computer, or playing video games was calculated as a sum of all these times. Dietary patterns and their factor scores were derived from a food frequency questionnaire using the factor analysis method. To analyze the association between dietary patterns and screen time, we conducted multiple linear regression analysis. We also performed multiple logistic regression analysis to estimate odds ratios (OR) of excessive screen time (2 hours or longer per day) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We identified 2 dietary patterns labeled "the Korean healthy dietary pattern" and "the Western diet and fast foods pattern". The former included mixed grains, legumes, potatoes, red meat, eggs, fish, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, seaweeds, and mushrooms, whereas the latter included noodles, bread, red meat, poultry, fast foods, snack, and soft drinks. After controlling for potential confounding factors, factor scores for the Korean healthy dietary pattern were inversely associated (P-value for trend < 0.01) and those for the Western diet and fast foods pattern were positively associated with the screen time (P-value for trend < 0.01). Adolescents in the top tertile of the scores for the Korean healthy dietary pattern had a multivariable-adjusted OR [95% CI] of 0.44 (0.25-0.75) for excessive screen time compared with those in the lowest tertile. On the basis of these findings, adolescents who have excessive screen time may need to be encouraged to consume a more healthy diet.

생체정보 측정장치를 활용한 젖소 발정탐지의 정확도 검증 (Verification of accuracy detection of the cows estrus using biometric information measuring device)

  • 젖소농가에서 착유생산성에 영향을 미치는 번식관리는 매우 중요한 요소이다. 젖소에서 번식관리는 발정의 조기 발견이 중요하며, 보다 정확하고 신속한 젖소의 발정시기에 대한 신뢰할 수 있는 자동 모니터링이 농가에는 필요한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 젖소의 발정유무, 활동량변화, 반추위 운동량, 반추위 온도 및 pH 등을 측정하는 기기를 활용하여 발정에 대한 정확도를 측정하였다. 연구에 사용된 생체정보기기 S1(Smaxtec, Austria)는 반추위 내 삽입형타입으로 반추위의 온도, pH, 젖소의 활동량 및 음수횟수 추정 등을 이용하여 발정 유무의 알림을 제공하고, S2(Healthy Cow 24, SCR. Allflex. Israel)는 목걸이 타입으로 반추위 운동량, 젖소의 활동량으로 발정의 유무를 알려준다. 기기에서 수집되는 데이터는 1일 2시간 간격으로 획득하였고, 각각의 기준일(Reference day: RD ; -7~-3, +7~+3)은 수정일(-2, -1, 0, +1, +2)이 5일과 수정 전 7일에서 수정 후 7일에 대한 평균값을 기준으로 비교하였다. 본 논문에서 사용된 S1 기기의 활동성은 기준일(RD : $10.2{\pm}1.0/day$)에 비해 수정일(-1 : $12.5{\pm}1.03/day$ ;0 : $12.9{\pm}1.73/day$)에서 증가 하는 것으로 나타났다. S2 기기의 활동성 또한 기준일 (RD : $40.3{\pm}2.68$)에 비해 수정일(0 : $63.0{\pm}3.66$)에서 증가 하는 것으로 분석되었다. S1의 일일 음수횟수는 기준일(RD : $5.9{\pm}0.89/day$)에서 수정일 전까지는 (-2 : $5.6{\pm}0.98$ ; -1 : $5.7{\pm}0.96$)으로 감소하는 것으로 나타났으나, 수정일(0 : $6.3{\pm}0.86$ ;+2 : $6.0{\pm}0.73$)에는 기준일과 같은 횟수를 보였다. S2의 일일 반추횟수는 기준일(RD : $493.8{\pm}10.92$) 보다 수정일(-1 : $390.2{\pm}13.36$; 0 : $354.1{\pm}16.71$)에 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

한국 젊은 성인의 4주간 시간제한식사 개입에서 살펴본 가당음료 섭취 패턴과 체조성 변화량과의 비교 분석 (The Consumption Pattern of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and its Comparison with Body Composition Change from a Four-Week Time-Restricted Eating Intervention in Korean Young Adults)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the consumption pattern of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and compare body composition changes by SSB consumption based on 28 days of dietary records from a four-week time-restricted eating intervention among young adults in Korea. Methods: A total of 33 participants completed the four-week dietary intervention with 8-hour time-restricted eating (TRE). The body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis at baseline, and daily dietary records were collected for 28 days during the intervention after 4 weeks. Results: Based on 924 days of dietary records, the average eating occasion of SSB was 0.9 times per day, and the average amount of SSB was 205.8 g/times. Based on an individual's usual intake of 28 days, the average eating frequency of SSB was 16.6 times out of 28 days, and the average amount of SSB was 184.0 g/day. The average energy intake from SSB was 131.0 kcal /day (8.7% of energy), and sugar intake from SSB was 18.2 g/day (4.9% of energy). The sugar intake was 2.6% of energy from sweetened dairy products, followed by 2.0% from coffee drinks, 0.5% from soda and juice and 0.2% from others. When subjects were divided into high (14 days or more) and low (less than 14 days) SSB groups based on eating frequency, the weight change in the low SSB group was -2.0 kg over 4 weeks, which was significantly lower than -0.7 kg in the high SSB group. However, no significant difference was found in muscle mass, fat mass and body fat percent between the two groups. Conclusions: This study suggests that low consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is more desirable in weight management despite having the dietary intervention of time-restricted eating without counting calories. Thus, further longitudinal studies on the association between SSB and obesity in Korean adults are necessary.

초지류형별(草地類型別) 방목축(放牧畜)에 의한 목초이용(牧草利用)과 방목(放牧) 및 사회습성(社會習性) 비교(比較) (A Comparison of Herbage Use, Grazing and Social Behaviour by Livestock Grazing under Grassland Types)

  • 평지(平地), 경사(傾斜) 및 임간초지(林間草地)의 유형(類型)이 가축(家畜)에 의한 목초이용(牧草利用)과 방목(放牧) 및 사회습성(社會習性)에 미치는 영향(影響)을 비교검토(比較檢討)하고자 4년차(年次) 기존(旣存) 혼파초지(混播草地)에서 한우육성빈우(韓牛育成牝牛) 30두(頭)와 재래산양(在來山羊) 5두(頭)를 공시(供試)하여 시험(試驗)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 재래산양(在來山羊)에 의한 상대섭취빈도(相對攝取頻度)는 평지초지(平地草地)가 35.2%, 경사초지(傾斜草地)가 35.0%, 임간초지(林間草地)가 29.8%이었고, 두당(頭當) 1일(日) 건물섭취량(乾物攝取量)은 평지초지(平地草地)가 462g, 경사초지(傾斜草地)가 459g, 임간초지(林間草地)가 391g이었으며 건물소화율(乾物消化率)은 평지초지(平地草地)가 63.7% 경사초지(傾斜草地) 63.0% 임간초지(林間草地)가 62.1%이었다. 2. 한우(韓牛)에 의한 채식시간(採食時間)은 초지류형(草地類型)에 따라 차이(差異)가 없었으나 반추시간(反芻時間)은 경사초지(傾斜草地)에서 길었고, 임간초지(林間草地)에서 짧았다. 휴식시간(休息時間)은 임간초지(林間草地)에서 길었고 경사초지(傾斜草地)에서 짧았다. 보행시간(步行時間)은 평지초지(平地草地)에서 길었고, 방황시간(彷徨時間)은 임간초지(林間草地)에서 길었다. 반추회수(反芻回數), 식괴당저작회수(食塊當咀嚼回數) 및 배분회수(排糞回數)는 임간초지(林間草地)에서 적었고, 배뇨회수(排尿回數)는 임간초지(林間草地)에서 많았다. 음수인수(飮水因數) 및 음수량(飮水量)은 경사초지(傾斜草地)에서 많았고 보행거리(步行距離)는 경사초지(傾斜草地)에서 길었다. 3. 한우(韓牛)에 의한 사회적(社會的) 거리(距離)는 임간초지(林間草地)가 3.70m, 경사초지(傾斜草地)가 3.56m, 평지초지(平地草地)가 3.41m였고, 두당점유면적(頭當占有面積)은 임간초지(林間草地)가 $14.6m^2$, 평지초기(平地草地)가 $11.9m^2$, 경사초지(傾斜草地)가 $11.0m^2$이었다. 우군형성(牛群形成)은 경사초지(傾斜草地)가 3.7두(頭), 평지초지(平地草地)가 3.6두(頭), 임간초지(林間草地)가 3.4두(頭)이었다. 방목이동순위(放牧移動順位)는 복합적(複合的)인 pear-shaped grazing formation에 가까웠으나 초지유형(草地類型)에 따른 상하(上下) 방목축간(放牧畜間)의 우열관계(優劣管係)는 분명(分明)치 않았다.

어린이의 식이습관과 치아우식발생과의 상관관계에 관한 연구 (RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIETARY HABITS AND DENTAL CARIES EXPERIENCE IN PRESCHOOL CHILDREN)

  • 본 연구는 치아우식 발생과 식이습관과의 상관관계를 알아보기 위하여 전주시내 소재 유치원에 다니는 남아 143명과 여아 124명을 대상으로 유치의 우식경험지수를 조사하고, 어머니로부터 설문조사를 통하여 어머니의 직업유무, 수유경험 및 어린이의 식품기호도 등을 조사한 후 이상의 자료를 분석하였으며, 본 연구에서 나타난 결과들을 중심으로 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 전체 어린이의 유치 우식경험지수는 $2.92{\pm}1.05$이였으며, 여아($3.40{\pm}1.46$)가 남아($2.51{\pm}0.97$) 보다 다소 높은 우식경험지수를 나타냈으나, 남녀간의 유의한 차이는 나타나지 않았으며(P>0.05), 연령에 따른 유치의 우식경험지수를 비교한 결과, 나이가 증가할수록 높아지는 양상을 보였으며, 3세와 4세에 비해 5세와 6세에서 각각 높은 우식경험지수를 나타냈다(P<0.05). 각 식품군에 대한 기호도에서 남아는 과실류를, 여아는 해조류를 가장 좋아하였으며, 해조류를 제외한 다른 식품군에서 남녀별 유의한 차이를 나타내지 않았으며(P>0.05), 조사 식품군에 대한 어린이의 기호도와 관련한 유치 우식경험지수를 비교한 결과, 당류(r=0.3854, P<0.05), 유류(r=0.4328, P<0.01), 음료(r=0.2586, P<0.05)에서는 유의성이 인정되었으나, 다른 식품군에서는 유의한 상관성이 인정되지 않았다(P>0.05).
