  • This paper reports a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in research on the enhancement of sensing properties for the detection of gases in exhaled breath. Daily health monitoring and early diagnosis of specific diseases via the analysis of exhaled breath is possible. Because biomarkers in exhaled breath are emitted in a very small amount, it is necessary to develop highly sensitive gas sensors. In recent years, a number of researches have been carried out using various strategies for the enhancement of sensing properties such as doping, catalyst, hollow sphere, heterojunction, size effect. We introduced each strategy and summarized recent progress on sensing properties for detection of biomarkers in exhaled breath.

  • The ozone layer monitoring program of the Global Environment Laboratory at Yonsei University in Seoul, established as one of the Global Ozone Observing System($GO_3OS$) of the World Meteorological Organization(WMO), has been carried out daily by measuring total ozone and its vertical distribution using a Dobson Ozone Spectrophotometer(Beck #124) since 1984. In this paper, we review the organization and the historical background of ozone measurements in Korea, describe data acquisition and analysis systems, and briefly summarize the results from our ozone observations.

  • Hourly data of PM10 concentration collected from nine automatic air quality monitoring stations in Busan from 1999 to 2002 were analyzed to evaluate the spatio-temporal variation and meteorological characteristics of PM10 episodes in Busan metropolitan area. Mean concentrations ranged from 47$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ to 77$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. For most stations, mean seasonal hourly concentrations are lowest in summer and highest in spring. PM10 episode above daily mean standard(150$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥) exhibited a maximum frequency at Gamjeondong and a minimum at Dongsamdong, and a maximum in March and a minimum in July and August. The diurnal variation of PM10 episode days is strongly influenced by traffic loads and meteorological conditions.

  • This study aims to evaluate the humidity control performance of low-priced generic ceramic panels that are used to control humidity. Temperature and humidity are monitored by using 'Living Lab' and the change of indoor relative humidity is measured and analyzed. According to the results of the study, the indoor relative humidity of rooms installed with ceramic panels was found to be low compared to that of living rooms by 2.2%RH (test period) and 3.2%RH (daily). In the case of maximum relative humidity, rooms installed with ceramic panels were found to be low by 6.9%RH. The results are attributable to the humidity absorption of ceramic panels. Accordingly, future ceramic panels need the improvement of performance and an appropriate construction area should be derived depending on indoor space.

  • Evapotranspiration estimations are essential for monitoring drought, wild land fire risk etc. In this study, a surface energy balance method, which combines meteorological observations with spectral data derived from remote sensing measurements, was used to estimate the regional evapotranspiration in the Mongolia, a large arid and semi-arid region with heterogeneous surface conditions. The Surface Energy Balance method has been applied to Landsat+ETM and NOAA-AVHRR sensors for the estimation of evapotranspiration in the grassland of Mongolia. As a result, a daily evapotranspiration map of Mongolia was produced.

  • As the super-aged society approaches rapidly, the number of people suffering from post-stroke and other neurological disorders is significantly increasing, where prompt and intensive rehabilitation is essential for such people to resume their physical activities in normal daily lives. To overcome the inherent limitations of manual physical therapy, various types of exoskeleton robots are being employed. However, the need of the hour is softer, thinner, lighter, and even stretchable systems for precisely monitoring the motion of each joint without restricting the patients' movements in rehabilitation tasks. In this paper, we discuss the technological trends and current status of emerging stretchable rehabilitation systems, in which sensors, interconnects, and signal-processing circuits are monolithically integrated within a single stretchable substrate attachable to the skin. Such skin-like stretchable rehabilitation devices are expected to provide much more convenient, user-friendly, and motivating rehabilitation to patients with neurological impairments.

  • With the advent of the IoT (internet of things) era, there has been discussion on how to efficiently use various information from daily life. In academic and industrial society, various smart devices such as smart watches, smart phones, and smart glasses have been developed and commercialized for narrowing the physical/psychological distance with user information. According to recent developments of smart devices, the contemporary people have desired to check their body information and treat disease by themselves. According to the needs of the time, biological researches by phototherapy/monitoring have been actively conducted. Among various light sources, microLEDs have been spotlighted due to their superior optoelectric properties and stability. In this paper, we would like to review the state-of-the research results on the next-generation biological therapy devices via microLEDs.

  • Sound and vibrations enter every aspect of our daily lives. Some, like music and verbal communications, soothe and relax us; others, such as the noise and vibration from traffic or machinery, can threaten our well being. The Rion Co., Ltd. was eslablished in 1944 as an affiliate of physics and acoustic pioneer, Kobayashi Institute of Physical Research. The RION lineup affords a full line of easy-to handle measuring, recording, and analyzing equipment with innumerable applications for monitoring and maintaining a comfortable environment. RION's concern takes in all manner of sound and vibration. Our activities extend from measuring reverberation time in concert halls and testing the soundproofing characteristics of housing materials to the control and maintenance of machine noise and vibration levels.

  • An adult raccoon dog with extensive, deep, and contaminated wounds on the right hip and multiple fractures was rescued. The open wound was managed daily by debridement and flushing for 3 weeks. Modified active drainage was then performed, and antibiotics administered according to the antibiotic susceptibility test. After 2 weeks, the exudate disappeared and the drain was removed. After monitoring for 1 month, the animal was released in to the wild. This case shows that even if infection remains, rapid wound repair is possible if appropriate antibiotic selection through regular examination and active drainage are combined.
