The purposes of this research were to identify nursing interventions performed by Korean nurses and to compare the interventions performed by nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals and with those performed by nurses working in the general hospitals. The samples consisted of 144 Korean nurses working in three hospitals, 70 nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals and 74 nurses working in the general hospitals. The Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) Use Questionnaire developed by the Iowa Intervention Project team was translated to Korean and verified using the method of back-translation. The questionnaire consists of 433 intervention labels and definition. Thirteen interventions were used at least daily by nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals, while twenty-one interventions were used at least daily by nurses working in the general hospitals. The most frequently used interventions by nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals were Documentation, Shift Report Vital Signs Monitoring, Pressure Ulcer Prevention, Positioning, Fall Prevention, Exercise Promotion, Intravenous (IV) Therapy, Pressure Ulcer care, and Bed Rest Care in that crder. For nurses working in the general hospitals the most frequent intervention was Analgesic Administration, followed by the interventions of Medication Administration : Parenteral and Intravenous Therapy (IV) Therapy, Documentation, Intravenous(IV) Insertion, Shift Report, Fall Prevention, Vital Signs Monitoring, Medication Adnninistraction : and, Fluid Monitoring, and Medication Maragement in that order. The interventions performed least often by nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals were Hemodialysis Therapy and Bleeding Reduction : Antepartum Uterus, while the interventions performed least often by nurses working in the general hospitals were Rape Trauma Treatment and Contact Lens Care. The nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals performed the interventions in the Physiological : Complex domain significantly more often than the nurses working in the general hospitals, while the nurses working in the general hospitals performed the intervention in the Behavior domain significantly more often than the nurses working in the oriental medicine hospitals. This study suggests that further study will be needed to developed and validate more interventions sensitive to Korean culture.
Real-time monitoring for environmental factors (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a, etc.) and fugacity of carbon dioxide ($fCO_2$) was conducted at an oyster Crassostrea gigas farm in Goseong Bay, south coast of Korea during 2-4th of November, 2011. Surface temperature and salinity were ranged from $17.9-18.7^{\circ}C$ and 32.7-33.8, respectively, with daily and inter-daily variations due to tidal currents. Surface $fCO_2$ showed a range of $390-510{\mu}atm$ and was higher than air $CO_2$ during the study period. Surface temperature, salinity and $fCO_2$ are showed significant correlations with chl.-a and nutrients, respectively. It means when chl.-a value is high in surface water of the oyster farm, active biological production consume $CO_2$ and nutrients from environments and produce oxygen, suggesting a tight feedback between biological processes and environmental reaction. Thus, factors affecting the surface $fCO_2$ were evaluated using a simple mass balance. Temperature and biological productions by phytoplankton are the main factors for $CO_2$ drawdown from afternoon to early night, while biological respiration increases seawater $CO_2$ at night. Air-sea exchange fraction acts as a $CO_2$ decreasing gear during the study period and is much effective when the wind speed is higher than $2-3m\;s^{-1}$. Future studies about organic carbon and biological production/respiration are required for evaluating the roles of oyster farms on carbon sink and coastal carbon cycle.
As body postures on bed affects various sleep related diseases, it is considered as important information when monitoring sleeping in daily life. Though there have already been a few approaches to monitor body postures on bed conventionally, the development for simple and unconstrained methods is still needed to realize the long-term daily monitoring. Focusing on the fact that ballistocardiogram changes depending on the body postures on bed, we developed a novel method to estimate body posturesusing extremely simple, film-type ballistocardiogram sensor which is based on polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) film. With 10 subjects, we performed two experiments. One was for an estimation test to show that body postures on bed can be estimated by ballistocardiogram, and the other was for a reproducibility test to present the feasibility of ballistocardiogram based body postures monitoring. To estimate body postures on bed, we made an individual template set of body postures by designating one ballistocardiogram (BCG) sample as a template in each postures. Then, we calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients between a sample and each templates and estimated the body posture of the sample by choosing a posture which corresponds to the most significant correlation coefficients. As a result, we estimated body postures on bed with 99.2% accuracy in average and found that the estimation using ballistocardiogram is reproducible.
Continuous and tremendous data (canopy temperature and meteorological variables) are necessary to determine Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI). This study investigated the optimal monitoring time and interval of canopy temperature and meteorological variables (air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind speed) to determine CWSIs. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) was used to quantitatively describe the accuracy of sampling method depending upon various time intervals (t=5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 minutes) and CWSIs per every minute were used as a reference. The NSE coefficient of wind speed was 0.516 at the sampling time of 60 minutes, while the ones of other meteorological variables and canopy temperature were greater than 0.8. The pattern of daily CWSIs increased from 8:00 am, reached the maximum value at 12:00 pm, then decreased after 2:00 pm. The statistical analysis showed that the data collection at 11:40 am produced the closest CWSI value to the daily average of CWSI, which indicates that just one time of measurement could be representative throughout the day. Overall, the findings of this study contributes to the economical and convenient method of quantifying CWSIs and irrigation management.
Comparing to the other air pollutants like $SO_2$, CO, the number of exceedance of the ozone national ambient air quality standard(NAAQS) and the ozone warning increased recently in Busan. The purpose of this study is to find out the preliminary symptoms for high ozone days in Busan area. In order to find out the preliminary symptoms, the hourly ozone data at air quality monitoring stations and the hourly meterological parameters at Busan regional meteorological 2007 to 2013 were used for the analysis. Averaged daily max ozone concentration was the highest(0.055 ppm) at Noksan and Youngsuri in the ozone season from 2007 to 2013. The horizontal distributions of daily max. ozone including all stations in Busan at high ozone days(the day exceeding 0.1 ppm of ozone concentration at least one station) were classified from two to five clusters by hierarchial cluster analysis. The meteorological variables showing strong correlation with daily max. ozone were the daily mean dew point temperature, averaged total insolation, the daily mean relative humidity and the daily mean cloud amount. And the most frequent levels were $19-23^{\circ}C$ in dew point temperature, $21-24 MJ/m^2$ in total insolation on the day before, $2.6-3.0 MJ/m^2$ on the very day, 67-80% in relative humidity and 0-3 in cloud amount.
Technology has had a tremendous impact on our daily lives. Recently, technology and its impact on aging has become an expanding field of inquiry. A major reason for this interest is that the use of technology can help older people who experience deteriorating health to live independently. In this paper we give a brief review of the in-home monitoring technologies for the elderly. In the pilot study, we analyze the possibility of employing the data generated by a continuous, unobtrusive nursing home monitoring system for predicting elevated(abnormal)pulse pressure(PP) in elderly(PP=systolic blood pressure-diastolic blood pressure). Our sensor data capture external information(behavioral) about the resident that is subsequently reflected in the predicted PP. By continuously predicting the possibility of elevated pulse pressure we may alert the nursing staff when some predefined threshold is exceeded. This approach may provide additional blood pressure monitoring for the elderly persons susceptible to blood pressure variations during the time between two nursing visits. We conducted a retrospective pilot study on two residents of the TigerPlace aging in place facility with age over 70, that had blood pressure measured between 100 and 300 times during a period of two years. The pilot study suggested that abnormal pulse pressure can be reasonably well estimated (an area under ROC curve of about 0.75) using apartment bed and motion sensors.

The new approach to the problem of oil spill detection consisting in combined use of all available quasiconcurrent satellite information (AVHRR NOAA, TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, MODIS Terra/Aqua, QuikSCAT) is suggested. We present the results of the application of the proposed approach to the operational monitoring of seawater condition and pollution in the coastal zone of northeastern Black Sea conducted in 2006. This monitoring is based on daily receiving, processing and analysis of data different in nature (microwave radar images, optical and infrared data), resolution and surface coverage. These data allow us to retrieve information on seawater pollution, sea surface and air-sea boundary layer conditions, seawater temperature and suspended matter distributions, chlorophyll a concentration, mesoscale water dynamics, near-surface wind and surface wave fields. The focus is on coastal seawater circulation mechanisms and their impact on the evolution of pollutants.
PDA-based monitoring is used to acquire continuously the patient's vital signs, including electrocardiography, activity, heart rate and $SpO_2$. In this paper, A biomedical signal acquisition device was designed using 3-axial MEMS accelerometer and 1-ch ECG amplifier, to have the function of monitoring activity and electrocardiography. The proposed system is composed of transmitter and receiver. Through the Zigbee communication, subject's biosignals can be transmitted in real-time to receiver, and transmitted data confirmed using PDA. The packet size used in this device was set not to exceed a maximum payload size of 116 byte. One packet consists of two segments. The transmission speed was 21 packet per second, 420 ECG samples per second, and 42 acceleration samples per second. The proposed method can be used to develop Activities of Daily Living(ADL} monitoring devices for the elderly or movement impaired people and enables patients to be monitored without any constraints. Also, this method will reduce medical costs in the aged society.
This paper proposes a portable ECG monitoring system, which integrates uptodate PDA and RF communication technology. The aim of the study is to acquire the subject's biomedical signal without any constraint. It has two types of transmission mode, which are total signal transmission mode and HR(heart rate)/SC(step count) transmission mode. In audition, wireless communication technology uses Zigbee Wireless PAN and can work in low-power mode, which is one of the advantages of ZiBbee communication technology. The developed system is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter has three-axial acceleration sensor. ECG amplifier and Zigbee communication controller. In total signal transmission mode, it can send data 50 packets per second whose transmission speed corresponds to 300 ECG samples and 60 acceleration samples. In HR/SG transmission mode, it can calculate heart rate from EEG data with 216 samples per second and step count from acceleration data and send a packet every cardiac cycle. The receiver forwards the received data to PDA, where the data can be stored and displayed. Therefore, the developed device enables to continuous monitoring for Activities of Daily Living(ADL). Also, this method will reduce medical costs in the aged society.

Visibility impairment in an urban area is mainly caused by airborne fine particulate matters. Visibility in a clean air environment is more sensitive to the change of PM$_{2.5}$ particle concentrations. However, a proportionally larger reduction in fine particle concentration is needed to achieve a small increment of visibility improvement in polluted areas. Continuous optical monitoring of atmospheric visibility and extensive aerosol measurements have been made in the urban atmosphere of Kwangju, Korea. The mean for fine particulate mass from 1999 to 2002 at Kwangju was measured to be 23.6$\pm$20.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. The daily average seasonal visual range was measured to be 13.1, 9.2, 11.0, and 13.9 km in spring, summer, fall, and winter, respectively. The mean light extinction budgets by sulfate, nitrate, organic carbon, and elemental carbon aerosol were observed to be 27, 14, 22, and 12%, respectively. It is highly recommended that a new visibility standard and/or a fine particle standard be established in order to protect the health and welfare of general public. Much more work needs to be done in visibility studies, including long-term monitoring of visibility, improvement of visibility models, and formulating integrated strategies for managing fine particles to mitigate the visibility impairment and climate change.e.
