  • Hepatic fibrosis is a common response to various chronic hepatic injuries and occurs as a consequence of the transformation of hepatic stellate cells into myofibroblasts (MFBs) producing abnormal extracellular matrix which is mainly induced by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-${\beta}$), especially TGF-${\beta}$1 [1,2]. As the liver becomes fibrotic, there are both quantitative and qualitative changes in several pathological markers related to the hepatic fibrosis. These fibrotic markers in liver are mainly consisted of several proteins and cytokines, but sometimes included specific type cells. The aim of this study was to detect expression and change of markers (TGF-${\beta}$, mallory body, cytokeratin, ${\alpha}$-SMA, hypoxia, collagen) during hepatic fibrogenesis. (omitted)

  • A mass of the adrenal gland was observed during a routine necropsy of a female 23-year-old Asian Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) at Seoul Zoo in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. The animal showed no clinical signs but the necropsy examination revealed hydropericardium, ascites, hydrothorax and edema of the intestinal wall, lung and adrenal gland. Histopathologically, the neoplastic cells of the right adrenal gland were arranged in lobules supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma. The neoplastic cells had round hyperchromatic nuclei and granular eosinophilic to basophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for chromogranin A and S-100 and negative for vimentin, synaptophysin and cytokeratin. Based on the above findings, this case was diagnosed as a pheochromocytoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a pheochromocytoma in an Asian Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

  • Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm. It mainly involves the abdominal or pelvic peritoneum of male adolescents. We report here the imprint cytologic features of a case of DSRCT occurring in the intraabdominal cavity of a 21-year-old man. A microscopic examination showed moderate cellularity. The tumor cells were singly arranged and arranged in clusters. The cells had round to oval nuclei with finely granular chromatin, inconspicuous nucleoli and scanty cytoplasm. Some tumor cells showed nuclear molding, and some cells had an epitheloid appearance with a large amount of lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm. A rosette-like pattern was present. Spindle-shaped, fibroblastic stromal cells were occasionally found. The tumor cells were immunoreactive for the markers cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), desmin, vimentin and neuron specific enolase (NSE).

  • Successful regeneration of a cartilage framework using perichondrium has been reported by several authors but there are some arguments surrounding mucosal regeneration. Some authors report that regeneration of mucosa is completed by ingrowth from neighboring tissue but others insist that it occurs via metaplasia from the squamous epithelium. This study was designed to investigate the differences, especially in mucosal regeneration between nonvascularized and vascularized flaps via immunohistochemical study. A morphologic study was carried out to elucidate the characteristics o( the regenerated mucosa which was sutured on the vascularized perichondrium and fabricated in a rabbit ear. A nonvascularized perichondrial-mucosal composite flap with the same dimension was transferred in the control group. BrdU was labelled on both normal mucosa and grafted mucosa in the experimental group without my statistically significant differences. In cytokeratin stain, it was regarded that mucosal coverage of the control group occurred by ingrowth from the neighboring mucosa. It can be conceived that metaplasia of the grafted mucosa occurs in a vascularized composite flap transferred group.

  • The changes of morphology and protein pattern of sarcoma 180 cells treated with or without trannins extracted from persimmon leaves were evaluated by light microscopy, electrophoresis and Western blotting. The sarcoma 180 cells treated with tannins increased the amount of proteins which presumably were intermediate filament cytokeratins detected by electrophoresis and Western blot. Tannins was indirectly cytotoxic to the sarcoma 180 cells and increased the intermediate filament protein level in the cells.

  • The lungs are one of the most common visceral sites for metastatic disease. The identification of a metastasis from a second primary lung tumor is clinically important for patients with pulmonary metastases of an extrathoracic origin. Although the cytologic features of metastatic tumors involving the lung have been extensively described, making the cytologic diagnosis is usually not easy in the absence of clinical information. However, the immunohistochemical staining for many tumor markers and the different expressions of cytokeratin 7 and 20 are very useful in the diagnosis. This review presents the cytomorphological spectrum of metastatic tumors along with the immunohistochemical findings.

  • A renal oncocytoma was diagnosed in an 8-year-old female Maltese dog with a history of renal cysts. Tumor cells were not detected until six months after observation of renal cysts. Nephrectomy was performed to treat the neoplasia. Tumor-like masses with numerous nodules were observed in the inner surface of cysts present in the caudal part of the left kidney. Histologically, the tumor consisted of cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. The diagnosis was based on histological features, periodic acid-Schiff reaction, and immunohistochemical cytokeratin staining. Based on a literature review, this is the first canine renal oncocytoma case reported in Korea.

  • Pulmonary masses were observed in the thoracic cavity of a 9-year-old female Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) encountered at a Jeju, Korea slaughterhouse. Grossly, the thoracic cavity was filled with pulmonary masses. Histologically, the neoplastic masses were composed of many abnormal papillary structures lined by single to double columnar neoplastic cells and formed arborizing fronds supported by significant fibrovascular stroma. The neoplastic cells showed strong destructive and infiltrative growth to adjacent tissues and were strongly positive for pan-cytokeratin (CK), CK 7 and sporadically positive for CK MNF116. The masses in the female Hanwoo were diagnosed as a papillary pattern of pulmonary adenocarcinoma.

  • Adrenal cystic lymphangiomas are extremely rare entities that are often identified incidentally, with less than 60 cases reported to date. We found a protruding ovoid mass consisting of a multiloculated cystic lesion within right adrenal gland in the cadaver of a 75-year-old Korean man. The epithelial cells lining the adrenal cyst were diffusely positive for cluster of differentiation 31 and podoplanin, and negative for pan-cytokeratin. The histopathological diagnosis confirmed a cystic lymphangioma arising from the adrenal gland. Post-mortem findings of the present case are discussed based on the clinicopathological features of adrenal cystic lymphangiomas.
