The purpose of the paper is to numerically investigate the acoustic noise characteristics of cylindrical roller bearings under radial load. For the sake of simplifying of the analysis, it was assumed that the cylindrical roller bearings are infinitely long. Furthermore, the effects of following on the noise of the bearing were also examined: the radial clearance of the bearing, the viscosity of the lubricant, and the number of the rollers. The results and discussions of the present paper could aid in the design of low-noise cylindrical roller bearings.
In this study, the nondimensional load capacity of water hydrodynamic journal bearings is calculated. A generalized coordinate formulation is applied to handle the complexity of bearing geometry. A window-based analysis program is developed to analysis the cylindrical hydrostatic bearings. Load capacities are calculated according to some design parameters such as clearance, diameter of orifice, size of recesses and temperature. The results are presented and discussed.
The occurrence of progressive collapse induced by the removal of the vertical load-bearing element in the structure, because of fire or earthquake, has been a significant challenge between structural engineers. Progressive collapse is defined as the complete failure or failure of a part of the structure, initiating with a local rupture in a part of the building and can threaten the stability of the structure. In the current study, the behavior of the structures equipped with a cylindrical friction damper, when the vertical load-bearing elements are eliminated, is considered in two cases: 1-The load-bearing element is removed under the gravity load, and 2-The load-bearing element is removed due to the earthquake lateral forces. In order to obtain a generalized result in the seismic case, 22 pair motions presented in FEMA p 695 are applied to the structures. The study has been conducted using the vertical push down analysis for the case (1), and the nonlinear time-history analysis for the second case using OpenSEES software for 5,10, and 15-story steel frames. Results indicate that, in the first case, the load coefficient, and accordingly the strength of the structure equipped with cylindrical friction dampers are increased considerably. Furthermore, the results from the second case demonstrate that the displacements, and consequently the forces imposed to the structure in the buildings equipped with the cylindrical friction damper substantially was reduced. An optimum slip load is defined in the friction dampers, which permits the damper to start its frictional damping from this threshold load. Therefore, the optimum slip load of the damper is calculated and discussed for both cases.

This paper analyzes file stiffness, damping coefficient, friction force and flow coefficient of externally pressurized oil journal beating, including the effect of journal rotation according to the Sommerfeld number. This paper assumed that the oil in the whole pocket has constant pressure, and that the oil in the whole bearing region has constant viscosity, temperature and density. Reynolds equation is derived from Nuvier - Stokes equation and continuity equation. And solved bearing pressure by ADI method for whole bearing region and fitted with out flow rate of pocket region. The model for numerical simulation is hydro - static oil journal bearing for high-speed, high-accuracy lathe spindle.
In a cylindrical sonar, a conventional broadband energy detector has limitations in the separation of adjacent targets. In this paper, a broadband detection algorithm using cross-correlation is applied to the cylindrical sonar to improve the bearing resolution. The proposed algorithm uses split beamforming before broadband detection processing using cross-correlation to generate half beams. The time delay obtained from the peak of correlation between half beams is used to estimate the bearing of target. Simulations demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed algorithm against the conventional algorithm.

This study aims to evaluate the stress and life of cylindrical roller bearings used in aircraft gearboxes, and to select a roller profile that minimises the contact stress between bearing rollers and raceways. The mounting clearance of four points contact ball bearing was determined, so that cylindrical roller bearings support all radial loads, and the bearing mounting position was determined to maximise the bearing lives. In addition, the static safety factor and dynamic life of bearing were predicted according to ISO 76 & ISO/TS 16281 using the load spectrum determined based on the operating load cases of aircraft gearboxes. Furthermore, the optimal roller profile was selected by analysing the contact stress according to the roller profile shape, and the safety of each roller was evaluated. The results stated that the required safety factor and lifetime were satisfied, and Johns Gohar roller profile was optimal.
In vertical hydro/hydraulic power turbine-generator applications, traditionally, cylindrical turbine guide bearings (TGBs) are widely used to provide turbine runner shafts with smooth rotation guides and supports. All existing cylindrical TGBs with simple plain pads have drawbacks such as having no pressure generation and film stiffness at the no-load condition and in addition, at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition, having very low film stiffness values and lacking design credibility in the stiffness values themselves. In this paper, in order to fundamentally improve the low-load/low-eccentricity performance of conventional cylindrical TGBs and thus enhance their design-application availability and usefulness, we propose to introduce a rotation-directional leading-edge taper to each partitioned pad, i.e., a pad leading-edge taper. We perform a design analysis of lubrication performance on $4-Pad{\times}4-Row$ cylindrical TGBs to verify an engineering/technical usefulness of the proposed pad leading-edge taper. Analysis results show that by introducing the leading-edge taper to each pad of the cylindrical TGB one can expect a constant high average direct stiffness with a high degree of design credibility, regardless of load value, even at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition and also control the average direct stiffness value by exploring the taper height as a design parameter. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed pad leading-edge tapers are greatly effective in more accurately predicting and controlling rotordynamic characteristics of vertical hydro-power turbine-generator rotor-bearing systems to which cylindrical TGBs are applied.
Cylindrical turbine guide bearings (TGBs) with simple plain pads have conventionally been used in vertical hydro-power turbine-generator applications in order to provide turbine runner shafts with smooth rotation guides and supports. To overcome low-load/low-eccentricity performance drawbacks, such as very low film stiffness and lack of design credibility in the stiffness values themselves, of conventional cylindrical TGBs, the introduction of a rotational-directional leading-edge taper to each partitioned pad, simply pad leading-edge taper, has been found to be very effective in enhancing their design-application availability and usefulness. In this study, we investigate the effects of taper angle and length for given taper heights in detail in order to systematically establish the effectiveness of design on the performance improvement of vertical hydro-power application cylindrical TGBs with pad leading-edge tapers. The analysis results with $4-Pad{\times}1-Row$ cylindrical TGBs show that the lubrication performance of the cylindrical TGBs is optimized with an approximate taper angle ratio of 0.8 and taper length ratio of 0.9. We conclude that the introduction of pad leading-edge tapers along with the optimization of taper designs can be very effective in improving the overall operation reliability of cylindrical TGBs and the rotordynamic characteristics of vertical hydro-power turbine-generator rotor-bearing systems as well, to which the TGBs are applied.
Various bearings such as deep-groove ball bearings, angular-contact ball bearings, and roller bearings are used to support the load and to lubricate between the shaft and the housing. The bearings of potential rolling systems in a turbo pump are the deep-groove ball bearings as comparing with the bearings with rolling elements such as cylindrical rollers, tapered cylindrical rollers, and needle rollers. The deep-groove ball bearings consist of rolling elements, an inner raceway, an outer raceway and a retainer that maintain separation and help to lubricate the rolling element that is rotating in the raceways. In the case of water-lubricated ball bearings, however, fluid friction between the ball and raceways is affected by the entry direction of flow, rotation speed, and flow rate. In addition, this friction is the key factor affecting the bearing life cycles and reliability. In this paper, the characteristics of flow conditions corresponding to a deep-groove ball bearing are investigated numerically, with particular focus on the friction distribution on the rolling element, in order to extend the analysis to the area that experiences solid friction. A simple analysis model of fluid flow inside the water-lubricated ball bearing is analyzed with CFD, and the flow characteristics at high rotation speeds are presented.
This research has focused on comparing the capacity predicted by the theoretical formula with the one measured by field load tests to examine characteristics of the bearing capacity of a helical pile. The helical pile is featured by a central shaft with one or more helical-shaped bearing plates. Being established by a small rotary attached to an excavator that applies toque, the helical piles can be readily constructed at narrow sites, especially in an urban area with relatively less noise than the others requiring driving and excavation. Although many cases of the helical pile constructions can be recently found, the bearing capacity of the pile has been limitedly studied. To this end, this contribution analyzes and presents comprehensive results of the ten field loading tests with an application of different parameters depending on joint condition and specification of the helical piles, and types of tests and grouting.
