  • This paper describes the effects of varying the minor flow on particle collection efficiency and particle concentration in small cyclones. A cyclone haying a minor flow pumped out from its dust outlet is referred to as a virtual cyclone in this study although the terminology has been used for other types of devices (Torczynski and Rader, 1997). The virtual cyclones tested here have a rectangular inlet and circular outlet similar to the conventional cyclone. (omitted)

  • Virtual cyclones have been the subject of aerosol separation studies since they were first developed by Torczynski and Rader (1996). In the virtual cyclone (originally referred to as the anticyclone), the main particle-laden flow follows a wall that curves away from the original flow direction rather than curving into the original direction, as in a cyclone. Although a wall forms the inner boundary of the main flow, its outer boundary is formed by an adjacent flow, often a confined recirculating flow, into which particles are transferred by centrifugal action. • Cyclone separators are widely used for cleaning gas streams or for catalyst recovery. For many years, the complexity of the gas flow pattern in cyclones has been a matter of many experimental and theoretical work. At present, precise flow measurements have been performed by means of LDA and hot-wire anemometry (Patterson and Munz, 1996; Hoekstra et al., 1999; Peng et al., 2002). In the theoretical work, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes are frequently employed for simulating cyclone gas-particle flows(Hoekstra et al., 1999). (omitted)

  • Cyclones are among the oldest types of industrial particulate control equipment and air sampling device. Until now, a great number of experimental studies have been performed on cyclones. In these studies, almost all of the eight cyclone dimensions were varied and Changes in cyclone performance produced by these variations were studied. However, very little information is available on the effects of the cone bottom diameter. (omitted)

  • In this paper, the numerical simulation of the gas-liquid flow in a cylinder cyclone separator is performed to investigate the flow characteristics using a commercial software, FLUENT, which solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RaNS) equations. First, a single-phase flow with water in a gas-liquid cylinder cyclone(GLCC) separator is simulated and compared with the experiments(Farchi, 1990) and numerical simulations(Erdal, 1997). Then, the characteristics of the multi-phase flow for water-air, mud-only, and mud-air cases are discussed in the view point of the feasibilities for a mud handling system.

  • In apartment building with column structure, reinforcing bar of the column is constructed mainly using gas pressure welding job. Therefore, gas pressure welding job in very critical process is construction apartment building with column structure. The purpose of this study is to analyze productivity of gas pressure welding work in column structure apartment using Web-CYCLONE. In this study, a CYCLONE model was developed for the productivity analysis of gas pressure welding work. Through this model, the optimal combination of the resources was obtained. This study will be utilized in the future as a useful tool of productivity analysis and the determination of an optimal combination of resources for gas pressure welding in apartment with column structure.

  • Carbonized rice husk(char from rice husk) can be used to improve soils for planting, seedlings, horiculture, pomiculture and truck gardening. Although it is not a fertilizer in nature, it stimulates the growth of plants. Carbonized rice husk is highly recommended for raising soil/water temperature, keeping moisture and aerating roots of plants. The objective of this study was to develop the effective production method of carbonized rice husks by a non-slagging vertical cyclone combustor. A cyclone combustor w vortex collecor Pocket in addition to central collector pocket was selected and tested. Isothermal tests and mixed firing with LPG and rice husk were performed in order to characterize the system. hut rice husk was used during the isothermal test to find the mass collected of rice husk. It was impossible to ignite rice husk itself over the experimental conditions considered in this experiment. The composition of original and carbonized rice husks was analyzed by the ultimate analysis. With the air flow rate of 20 ㎥/h, LPG flow rate of 0.45 1/min, the required carbonized rice husk could be obtained.

  • The objective of this study is development of low emission pulverized coal combustor for reducing pollutant emission generated from coal combustion. Low emission combustion technology for reducing NOx and fly ash was investigated by using 2 stage coaxial cyclone combustor. Staged combustion was employed for NOx reduction and high temperature slagging combustion was also studied for fly ash removal in the combustor. The result of this study shows that the low emission combustion system can reduce the amount of atmospheric pollutions with improved boiler efficiency and performance.

  • This study investigates the possibility of seasonal prediction for tropical cyclone activity in the western North Pacific by using a dynamical modeling approach. We use data from the SMIP/HFP (Seasonal Prediction Model Inter-comparison Project/Historical Forecast Project) experiment with the Korea Meteorological Administration's GDAPS (Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System) T106 model, focusing our analysis on model-generated tropical cyclones. It is found that the prediction depends primarily on the tropical cyclone (TC) detecting criteria. Additionally, a scaling factor and a different weighting to each ensemble member are found to be essential for the best predictions of summertime TC activity. This approach indeed shows a certain skill not only in the category forecast but in the standard verifications such as Brier score and relative operating characteristics (ROC).
