  • This paper describes the characteristic of die finishing to obtain smooth surface using electro-chemical grinding after cutting process. Electro-chemical grinding is possible under lower load and tool wear comparing with those in the mechanical grinding. Conventionally, if the metal bonding material of the grinding wheel is directly t contacted with workpiece, the current is circulated without electrolytic phenomena. Sometimes, electrical discharge is occurred between tool and workpiece. To cope with this problem, the metal-resin bonded pellet was used in this study. This pellet is composed of optimal volume of metal and resin powders and its characteristics are changable with the each volume of powders. Finally, high efficient die finishing is realized using metal resin bonded pellet in electro-chemical grinding.

  • Demands for micro parts have increased with recent advances in IT and machinery industries. However, the present technology loaves much to be desired to effectively produce parts with the volume of $1mm^{3}$ and less by mechanical method in large quantities. This paper provides a method for efficient quantity production of complete micro 3D structure using micro end-milling cutting process. The possibility has proven via manufacturing experiment of a multistage micro complex gear structure of $500{\mu}m$ in length, $500{\mu}m$ in maximum external diameter and a volume of $1mm^{3}$ and less.

  • To recycle the uranium resources in the spent nuclear fuels, all the fuel rods are extracted from the spent fuel assemblies. The remaining components of the spent fuel assembly after extracting all the rods, so called a NFBC(Non-Fuel Bearing Components), should be compacted to minimize the waste volume. To this present, KAERI (Korea Atomic Research Institute) has developed he NFBC compactor by introducing a new concept of cutting and compaction, In this paper, to achieve he maximum compaction ration of the NFBC volume while reducing compactor size, an fuzzy controller, which determines the reference force of the compactor, is proposed with using he fuzzy-inference.

  • A new efficient intelligent machining strategy named the Steepest Directed Tree method is presented in this study, which makes surface model discrete with triangulation meshes and the cutter paths track along the tree directions. In order to formulate these algorithms practically, it is deduced the multi-stage machining approach of uncut volume caused by cutter gouging in the course of milling using flat end mill. It is systematized the checking process the cutter interference by grouping the 6 kinds of gouging types, which yields the environment of connectivity data lists including CL-data, and then the multi-stage machining strategy, that minimizes uncut area by continuously sequencing the generative subsequent CL-paths, is shamed to determine the second tool path for the next uncut area and to compose the operating multi-stage cutting processes. The completed machining system of curved surfaces is evaluated by testing the practical machining experiments which have various kinds of shape conditions.

  • We construct a volume whose boundary is a tetrahedron with triangular faces intersecting the cutting planes along the given contours. This volume is obtained by calculating the Delaunay triangulation slice by slice, mapping 2D to 3D as tetrahedron. Also, eliminate extra-voronoi skeleton and non-solid tetrahedron. In this paper, we propose new method to eliminate non-solid tetrahedron based on the modified extra-voronoi skeleton path. This method enable us to do a compact tetrahedrisation and to reconstruct complex shapes.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate several leading options for the management of radioactive metallic waste against a set of general criteria including safety, cost effectiveness, radiological dose to workers and volume reduction. Several options for managing metallic waste generated from decommissioning are evaluated in this paper. These options include free release, controlled reuse, and direct disposal of radioactive metallic waste. Each of these options may involve treatment of the metal waste for volume reduction by physical cutting or melting. A multi-criteria decision analysis was performed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to rank the options. Melting radioactive metallic waste to produce metal ingots with controlled reuse or free release is found to be the most effective option.

  • ISO 14649 is a new interface (or language) standard for the CAD-CAM -CNC chain, currently under establishment by ISO TC184 SCI and SC4 . Upon completion, it will replace ISO 6983, so called M amp; G codes used for CNC since 1950' s. As the new language is being established, a new CNC controller called STEP-CNC (STEPcompliant CNC), capable of carrying out various intelligent tasks using the new language as an input, receives worldwide attention. In this paper, we present a distributed architecture for STEP-NC system based on the generic paradigm of STEP-NC. The STEP-NC system is consisted of 3 sub-systems: 1) CGS (Code Generation System), 2) CES (Code Edit System), and 3) ACS (Autonomous Control System). Also presented in this paper is algorithm for delta volume decomposition, a crucial algorithm for developing CGS. First method is based on the cutting tool and the second method is based on the turning features commonly used in the shop floor. An illustrative example is given to compare the two methods, and to illustrate usage scenario of the delta volume in the turning STEP- NC system under development.

  • The virtual surgery of Artificial Heart has focused on the simple fitting trial. But, as the processes of heart surgery being complex and detail, the requests of virtual surgery become more complex. One of the complex requests is volume editing. It may contain various editing functions: 3-dimensional cutting, registration, merging, splitting, inserting, deleting, translation and deformation. We have designed and implemented 3-dimensional volume editor that can be operated in Windows NT platform. With the results of this research, we can get convenient tools for the total virtual surgery system.

  • This paper proposes a three-dimensional (3D) segmentation algorithm for extracting a diagnostic object from ultrasound images by using a LoG operator In the proposed algorithm, 2D cutting planes are first obtained by the equiangular revolution of a cross sectional Plane on a reference axis for a 3D volume data. In each 2D ultrasound image. a region of interest (ROI) box that is included tightly in a diagnostic object of interest is set. Inside the ROI box, a LoG operator, where the value of $\sigma$ is adaptively selected by the distance between reference points and the variance of the 2D image, extracts edges in the 2D image. In Post processing. regions of the edge image are found out by region filling, small regions in the region filled image are removed. and the contour image of the object is obtained by morphological opening finally. a 3D volume of the diagnostic object is rendered from the set of contour images obtained by post-processing. Experimental results for a tumor and gall bladder volume data show that the proposed method yields on average two times reduction in error rate over Krivanek's method when the results obtained manually are used as a reference data.

  • This study was carried out for the artificial forest stand of 23 years old jack pine(Pinus banksiana Lamb.) in Soheul-myun, Pochun-kun, Kyunggi province of Korea. The objectives of this study were to investigate the stand volume increment and the rate of stand volume, and were to investigate present stand volume to determine annual cutting volume for keeping stand volume to an ideal level for investigated jack pine stand. For a reasonable calculation of stand volume increment, diameter of breast height(DBH), tree height, bark width, and core length for the last 10 years for respective sampling plots were measured. By using these measurements annual diameter increment in DBH class, stand volume increment of 95% confidence interval and tree height curve equation were calculated. The tree height value was derived from the tree height curve equation. Calculation of tree volume by using the tree volume table was made by conferring the tree height value. The summarized results for investigated jack pine trees were having 7.7% annual stand volume increment with 6.1% estimated error. The total stand volume per ha was $79.58m^3$, accordingly the annual stand volume increment was $6.13m^3$ per ha, and the 95% confidence intervals range from 5.77 to $6.51m^3$.
