  • The purpose of this paper is to study on the effect of cutting off tension bars in reinforced concrete beams. that is, the ultimate strength, the failure mode and thl} tension stress distribution through the span. To achieve this purpose, a full-scale frame and seven small scale model beams (five rectangular and two T-section beams) were tested. The four main model specimens and two speciml}ns without cutting off tension bars 1,'{ere analyzed as plane stmss element with package program ADINA. As a result of test and analysis, the shorter' distance bet ween the reaction point and the cutting off point, the higher the ultimate strength of a bl}am will be when other physical properties are equal.

  • Many allergists are currently focusing on the development of new diagnostic tools, and are attempting to improve both the sensitivity and specificity. A multiple allergen simultaneous test-chemiluminescent assay (MAST-CLA) is one of the most popular diagnostic tools used in the Republic of Korea. However, there remains controversy among allergists with regard to the cut-off point for a positive result. The present study was conducted in order to determine the validity of MAST-CLA as compared with that of the skin prick test, with particular emphasis on arthropod allergens, on the basis of percentage agreement rates and k-values, and also to suggest the optimal positive cutoff points using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The study was conducted with 97 subjects (54 men, 43 women). Optimal individual cut-off points were calculated as follows; class II for Dermatophagoides farinae, class I for Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, and trace for a cockroach mix. These findings suggest that attempting to apply optimal individual cut-off points will be a good way of improving diagnostic tests, particularly MAST-CLA.

  • Average memory occupancy and congestion in computer system or communication system may be reduced further if new jobs are admitted only when the number of jobs queued at CPU is below a certain threshold, run queue cutoff (RQ). In our previous paper we showed that response time of a job is invariant with respect to RQ if jobs do not communicate each other. In this paper, we prove that the invariance property by considering the evolution of the queue lengths as point processes. We also present an approximate method for the delay due to context switching under time slicing.

  • Satellite visibility, Accuracy, and Availability were increased by the combined GPS/GLONASS. But, there are some problems such as differences in the time frame, differences in the coordinate datum, and the problem of solving carrier phase ambiguities in the combined carrier frequency solutions due to different GLONASS frequency. Therefore, the accuracy of single point positioning using the combined GPS/GLONASS will be assessed, and intend to study the characteristics of the combined GPS/GLONASS with considered the rate of data acquisition according to the visibility of satellite and elevation cutoff at the combined GPS/GLONASS.

  • A single specimen of Albula leptocephalus (55.7 mm SL) was collected from the southern coastal waters of Korea using an aquatic lamp. It is characterized by having a ribbon-like body with a small head and a well-forked caudal fin. Although the general appearance was similar to the leptocephalus of A. vulpes including myomere counts and fin ray counts, the melanophore deposition was different from that of A. vulpes. This leptocephalus specimen was confirmed with A. forsteri using the cytochrome b mtDNA (Cytb) analysis. The genetic distance of Cytb between the present leptocephalus and A. forsteri is 0.006-0.038, which falls into the cutoff point separating Albula species into eight deep lineages including the four valid species. Its genetic characteristic have more similarities to those of Fiji than those of Hawaii and the Northern territory of Australia.

  • It has been a critical issue to reduce the size of spectrometers in many fields such as on-chip chemical and biological sensing. The proposed plasmonic channel-waveguide with a sub-micrometer width has a cutoff frequency which enables us to control wavelength dependent propagation properties. We focused on the capability of the waveguide for spectral-to-spatial mapping when the waveguide width changes gradually. In this paper, we propose a plasmonic tapered channel-waveguide structure as a compact spectrometer with a physical size of $0.24{\times}2.0{\times}0.20{\mu}m^3$. The scattering point just above the tapered waveguide moves linearly depending on the wavelength of the injecting light. The spectral-to-spatial mapping can be improved by increasing the tapered length.

  • Background: To investigate the value of ultrasound elastography (UE) in the differentiation between benign and malignant enlarged cervical lymph nodes (LNs). Methods: B-mode ultrasound, power Doppler imaging and UE were examined to determine LN characteristics. Two kinds of methods, 4 scores of elastographic classification and a strain ratio (SR) were used to evaluate the ultrasound elastograms. Results: The cutoff point of SR had high utility in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant of cervical lymph nodes, with good sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. Conclusion: UE is an important aid in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant cervical LNs.

  • We consider communication or computer systems that have the average memory occupancy and congestion. A certain system may be reduced further if new processes are admitted only when the number of processes queued at the processor is below a certain threshold, run queue cutoff(RQ). We show that response time of a process is invariant with respect to RQ when processes do not communicate each other. The invariance property is considered with the evolution of the queue lengths as point processes and demonstrate it numerically using matrix-geometric methods. We illustrate the RQ invariance property.

  • When establishing shielding facilities for EMP protection, WBC effect is used to protect fire pipes and honeycomb cells are inserted into the fire pipes to improve the shielding effectiveness. At this point, the smaller unit cell of honeycombs becomes, the more likely it interrupts the flow of water, which ends up clogging the fire pipes with sediment. To prevent this phenomenon, I would suggest a design method due to the pilarization loss of water molecules that contributes to increasing the size of honeycomb cells and remaining thin-walled sufficient for required shielding effectiveness.

  • Objectives : Poststroke depression is a frequent and specific entity that impaires the rehabilliation and functional recovery of patients with hemiplegia. The author evaluated the effect of Banhahubak-tang(Banxiahoupotang) in patients with poststroke depression. Methods : 38 patients suffering from poststroke depression(determined by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, revised. 3rd edition. and Beck Depression Inventory[BDI] cutoff $point{\geqq}10$) in Kyunghee Oriental hospital were randomized into two groups; treatment group(n=19) and control group(n=19). The treatment group was prescribed with Banhahubak-tang(Banxiahoupotang) three times a day fur a week. Control troop was prescribed with other herbal medicines used for stroke Patients three times a day for a week. Patients were evaluated by use of BDI scale, Modified Barthel Index, Depression of Ki score, Yin syndrome score, and Yang syndrome score. Among 38 patients, 24 patients got BDI scores above 21, which is the cut-off score for depression in Korean. The same procedures and assessments described above were applied. Results : Treatment group did not significantly improve compared with control group. Results yielded only slight significance (P=0.086). Especially. patients with poststroke depression as yin syndrome improved more significantly on BDI than those classified as yang syndrome. When BDI cutoff point for depression was defined as being ${\geq}\;21$, treatment group did not significantly improve compared with control group(P=0.114). However, patients with poststroke depression classified as yin syndrome were also significantly improved on BDI than those classified as yang syndrome. Conclusions : This study suggests that Banhahubak-tang(Banxiahoupotang) is significantly effective in patients with poststroke depression classified as yin syndrome.
