Numerical investigation on pressure responsiveness properties of the skirt-cushion system of an air cushion vehicle

  • The pressure responsiveness property of a skirt-cushion system, which is closely related to the overall performance of Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs), has always been the difficulty and challenging problem involving cushion aerodynamics and flexible skirt dynamics. Based on a widely used bag and finger skirt-cushion system, the pressure responsiveness properties are investigated numerically. The physical process and mechanism are analyzed and a numerical method for evaluating the pressure responsiveness property is proposed. A cushion-skirt information communication platform is also presented for interchanging the force and the skirt configuration between cushion aerodynamics and flexible skirt dynamics. The pressure responsiveness of a typical skirt-cushion system is calculated and the results demonstrate that the pressure responsiveness property helps alleviate the influence of the cushion height changing on the overall performance of ACVs. Finally, the influences of skirt geometrical and cushion aerodynamic parameters on the pressure responsiveness properties are discussed systematically, giving insight into the design of skirt-cushion systems.

  • The users who use the wheelchair are confined to a wheelchair for a long time. Accordingly, the use of seat cushion for pressure distribution is very important in order to prevent a bedsore. Therefore, this paper provides useful information for design of seat cushion through statistical testing among nothing cushion, low cell type of air cushion, high cell type of air cushion, and jelly type of air cushion. It turned out that the jelly type and high cell type of air cushion have a serious effect on decision and design of seat cushion.

  • Hydraulic excavator consists of booms, arms, bucket, and cylinder. The cylinder make these structures moved and the cushion parts of cylinder in operation absorb the great impact which is stemmed from high velocity and pressure at cushion parts of cylinders. The cushion technology of cylinders has a great effect on the operator's comfortable as well as protecting equipment from damage by suppressing the inertia of the hydraulic excavator. In this study, three hydraulic cylinders have different shapes of a cushion ring, respectively. we studied optimal cushion pattern by analyzing the change of cushion pressure and time, according to supply pressure and velocity variations.

  • Cushion sleeves are used in pneumatic cylinders to avoid impact force arising at the end stroke part between moving piston and cylinder cover. In this study low kinds of cushion sleeves are designed, manufactured and attached to the pneumatic cylinder to be experimented. The effects of cushion sleeves on cushion characteristics are investigated. e results are as follows; the pressure variation of cushion room with orifices are inspected to be smaller than that of cushion room without orifices. So sleeves with orifices are expected as protecting from impact and vibration of pneumatic cylinder. The object of this study is to provide data on the charactristics of pneumatic cushion sleeve in case of being used in industry.

  • This paper studies the comparative analysis on two different internal cushion devices (the types of needle and relief valve) used to absorb the energy which is generated when the pneumatic cylinder moves with the load at meter-out speed control system. The effect at varying the piston velocity under same driving condition is mainly investigated. The simulation results on pressure in the cushion chamber and the dynamic behavior of the relief valve type cushion device are compared with the needle valve type. Design and performance are improved with the cushion configuration of better quality at high-speed pneumatic cylinder. Based on the relation between absorbed energy and impact energy at cushion process, cushion performance at pneumatic cylinder is evaluated.

  • This paper presents a simulation model of a double-acting high-speed pneumatic cylinder with a relief valve type cushion mechanism. The model predicts piston motion, mass flow rate, pressure and temperature time histories of cushion chamber. Of interest here is to investigate the cushioning effect of varying the piston and piston-rod diameter, cushion ring diameter and length, and stoke in cushion mechanism. As a result, this cushion mechanism is found to be adequate under high-speed driving of pneumatic cylinders. The simulation model proposed here will be very useful to analyze the dynamic characteristics and to improve or design the better cushion mechanism in high-speed pneumatic cushion cylinders.

  • It is well known, for many years, that deep drawability can be improved by applying variable blank holding force. To apply variable blank holding force during cup drawing, we set up cushion pressure control system on the hydraulic press, and the pressure control system is often called NC(Numerically Controlled) cushion system. A cushion pressure control experiment was carried out using the NC cushion and it was shown that the proposed system produced good performance. The comparison of drawability of square cups with and without NC cushion showed that the drawability could be greatly improved when S-shaped pressure curve was applied. This paper includes design details of the NC cushion system and experimental analysis of drawability with NC cushion system.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the effective dynamic characteristics of an improved pneumatic cushion cylinder with a spring type needle valve. The dynamic model represented the peak pressure control method when the pneumatic cushion cylinder is moving forward or backward in the horizontal direction. It was found from the simulation results that the peak pressure in the cushion chamber is affected by the spring, which helps to understand the performance of the pneumatic cushion cylinder and to improve or design a better cushion needle valve component. From the simulation results, the stability of pneumatic cushion cylinder with a spring type needle valve was superior and its cushion capability was also better than that without the spring.

Surface Dose and Transmission Factor for Vacuum Cushion (Vacuum Cushion 사용시 표면선량과 투과율 평가)

  • The individual (customized) immobilization has been used to reproduce the patients' set-up on daily base. There are many various devices available commercially. To evaluate dosimetric characteristics of vacuum cushion, we analysed the surface dose and transmission factor for d$_{max}$ when patient is immobilized with vacuum cushion. Experiments were performed with 4 MV (Varian 4/100, USA), 6 MV, 15 MV (Varian CL2100C/D, USA) photon beams and five field sizes (5$\times$5, 10$\times$10, 20$\times$20, 30$\times$30, 40$\times$40 $\textrm{cm}^2$) on each occasion. Outputs were measured from surface of polysterene phantom to d$_{max}$ with four different thicknesses of cushion, which is 12, 32, 48 mm and only vinyl without styroforms. As results, the transmission factor for thicknesses of vacuum cushion was ranged from 0.9953 to 1.0043. The more the thickness of vacuum cushion is thick, the more surface dose delivered to patient is increased. The surface dose vary with the thickness of vacuum cushion for energy and field size. The skin reactions may result. But the variation is not serious in the clinic.
