  • Viscoelastic instabilities are of fundamental importance to understanding the physics of complex fluids and of practical importance to materials processing and fluid characterization. Significant progress has been made over the past 15 years in understanding instabilities in viscoelastic flows with curved streamlines and is reviewed here. Taylor-Couette flow, torsional flow between a cone and plate, and torsional flow between parallel plates have received special attention due to both the basic significance of these flows and their critical role in rheometry. First, we review the criteria for determining when these flows become unstable due to elasticity in the absence of inertia, and discuss the generalization of these criteria to more complex flows with curved streamlines. Then, focusing on experiments and simulations in the Taylor-Couette problem, we review how thermal sensitivity (i.e., the dependence of fluid viscosity and elasticity on temperature) and inertia affect the stability of viscoelastic flows. Finally, we conclude with some general thoughts on unresolved issues and remaining challenges related to viscoelastic instabilities.

  • Laminar flow and heat transfer in a channel with blockages are obtained numerically in a Reynolds-number range of $100{\leq}Re{\leq}400$. A boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinate system is generated for irregular boundary of the physical region, and solutions of Navier-Stokes equation and energy equation are obtained by finite analytic method in the transformed computational domain. The flow separates in downstream of the blockage and the length of separated-flow region increases with Reynolds number. The heat flux is high on the top of the blockages and increase in the heat transfer occurs where the fluid reattaches the wall. Comparison between computed streamlines and experimental flow-visualization is also presented and discussed.

  • The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Full Navier-Stokes equation solver with sliding multi-block method has been applied to analyze three dimensional characteristics of the flow field and compression wave around the high speed train which Is entering into a tunnel. The numerical scheme of AF + ADI was used to efficiently solve Navier-Stokes equations in the curvilinear coordinate system. The vortex formation around the nose region was found and the generation of compression wave due to the blockage effects was observed ahead of the train in the form of plane wave. The three dimensional characteristics of the flow field compared to the analytic results were discussed in detail. The variation of pressure of tunnel wall surface and velocity profile of the train are identified as the train enters into a tunnel. The changes in aerodynamic forces and streamlines of each specific sections are also discussed and presented.

  • In this paper, the submarine model, called DARPA SUBOFF model, has been numerically analyzed to investigate the aerodynamic forces variation in terms of angle of attacks and yaw angles. The SUBOFF model is consisted of the three parts : axisymmetric body, fairwater, and four symmetric stern appendages. Three dimensional unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation was used on curvilinear multi-block grid system. To validate the present code, the SUBOFF tare hull and an ellipsoid at angle of attacks of $10^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$ were simulated and a good agreement with experiments was obtained. After the code validation, the flows over SUBOFF model were simulated at three different angle of attacks and yaw angles. The variation of aerodynamic forces in terms of angle of attack and yaw angle were calculated. Also, to understand the flow features around a submarine with variation of yaw and attack angle, the pressure contours and streamlines were plotted.

  • The flow through a centrifugal compressor impeller was calculated using the 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution method. A control volume method based on a rotating curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and a standard k-.epsilon. model was used to obtain eddy viscosity. Numerical results and experimental data were compared for the overall performance of the impeller, the pressure distributions along the shroud wall and the detailed flowfields at the design and off-design conditions, which showed good coincidence. The flow through the impeller is complex with the curvature of the streamlines and rotation. The development of secondary flows and the jet-wake flow characteristics, which is the main source of flow loss, was discussed. Calculation results show quite different patterns as the flow rate changes.
