Measurements of the local heat transfer coeffcients on a spherically concave surface with a round impinging jet are presented. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers used were 1,000, 23,000 and 50,000 and the nozzle-to-jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Presented results are compared to previous measurements for flat plate. In the experiment, the local heat transfer Nusselt numbers on a concave surface are higher than those on a flat plate. Maximum Nusselt number at all region occured at L/d=6 and second maximum in the Nusselt number occured at R/d=2 for both Re=50,000 and Re=23,000 in case of L/d=2 and for only Re=50,000 in case of L/d=4. All other cases exhibit monotonically decreasing value of the Nusselt number along the curved surface.
In the shipyard, line heating and triangle heating are two major processes for forming curved plates in various shapes. While there have been many studies on line heating, triangle heating has been rarely studied due to its complicated heating process with irregular multi-heating paths and highly concentrated heat input. As the triangle heating process is one of the most labor-consuming jobs in shipyards, it is essential to study the automation as well as improvement of triangle heating process in order to increase hull forming productivity. In this study, a pioneering attempt to simulate triangle heating was made. A circular disk-spring model was proposed for elasto-plastic analysis procedure of triangle heating and the inherent strain method was also used to analyze the deformation of plates. Simulation results were compared with those of experiments and showed good agreement. It is shown that the present approach including analysis model used in this study is effective to simulate the triangle heating for plate forming process in shipbuilding.
The spermatogenesis of Korean slug, Incilaria fruhstorferi are observed by electron microscope. The results are as follows: The spermatogenesis of Korean slug, Incilaria fruhstorferi, is processed through the five stages; Spermatogonia, primary spermatocyte, secondary spematocyte, spermatid and spermatozoon. The spermiogenesis, the differentiation of the spermatid, is also processed through the five stages. In stage 1, the numerous and round mitochomdria in the cytoplasm are moved around the nucleus of spermatid. In stage 2, the nucleus of spermatid transformed into the oval shape, and the oval nucleus is surrounded by many rough endoplasmic reticulum. In stage 3, the oval nucleus of spermatid is changed to be curved as an arrow, and then two centrioles appeared behind nucleus. The centriole is sucked into the cytoplasm. and almost all the chromatins are changed into heterochromatins. In stage 4, the nucleus of spermatid are transformed into the oval shape, when the lamella plate chromatin of spermatid form in the nucleoplasm. In stage 5, the oval nucleus is then transformed into the stream-line shape when the lamella plate chromatin of spematid gradually concentrated in the nucleus, and long axoneme ($65{\mu}m$ in length) form from the distal centriole. Two long mitochondria in the middle piece and the main piece of spermatozoon array spirally along a long axoneme, and the mitochondria matrix is gradually filled with electron-dense glycogen particles ($0.1{\mu}m$ in size). The axoneme of spermatozoon consists of typical 9+2 microtubular pattern.
The line array roll set(LARS) process, as one of many kinds of incremental forming processes, is a continuous process in which a flat metal plate is formed into a singly or doubly curved plate through successive passes of forming rolls. It was found that the curvature level of the formed plates in the previous study was well over the curvature required in shipyards. This fact shows that the LARS method has good potential for shipbuilding applications. The major purpose of the present study is to estimate experimentally the general applicability of the line array roll set process for the manufacture of ship hull plates. In this study, the target shapes are selected through investigation of the shape classification of ship hull plates that comprise a certain vessel. Forming processes for twisted shapes are analyzed with the finite element method(FEM) and the results of experimental work are presented. On the basis of the experimental and numerical results, the LARS process is applied to the production of real outer hull plates of a small patrol ship.
Flame bending has been extensively used in the shipbuilding industry for hull plate forming In flame bending it is difficult to obtain the desired shape because the residual deformation dependson the complex temperature distribution and the thermal plastic strain. Mechanical bending such as reconfigurable press forming multi-point press forming or die-less forming has been found to improve the automation of hull plateforming because it can more accurately control the desired shape than line heating. Multi-point forming is a process in which external forces are used to form metal work-pieces. Therefore it can be a flexible and efficient forming technique. This paper presents an optimal approach to determining the press-stroke for multi-point press forming of curved shapes. An integrated configuration of Finite element analysis (FEA) and spring-back compensation algorithm is developed to calculate the strokes of the multi-point press. Not only spring-back is modeled by elastic plastic shell elements but also an iterative algorithm to compensate the spring-back is applied to adjust the amount of pressing stroke. An iterative displacement adjustment (IDA) method is applied by integration of the FEA procedure and the spring-back compensation work. Shape deviation between the desired surface and deform£d plate is minimized by the IDA algorithm.
This paper deals with a usefulness verification of stretch forming process using flexible die. The stretch forming method is widely used in aircraft and high-speed train industries for manufacturing of skin structure, which is made of sheet metal. A great number of solid dies are originally used and developed for specific shapes with respect to different curvature radii of the skin structures. Accordingly, flexible stretch forming process is proposed in this study. It replaces the conventional solid dies with a set of height adjustable discrete punches. A usefulness of the flexible die is verified through extensive numerical simulations of the stretch forming process for simply curved sheet plate. The elastic recovery is considered and formability evaluations are conducted through a comparison of symmetry plane configurations.
BLU(back light unit) is one of kernel parts of LCD(liquid crystal display) unit. New 3-D micro-lens pattern for LGP(light guide plate), one of the most important parts of LCD-BLU, had been researched. Instead of dot pattern made by chemical etching or laser ablation, SCS(slanted curved surface) micro-lens pattern was designed with optical CAE simulation. This study introduce the method of design using optical CAE simulation for SCS micro-lens, the new fabrication method of micro-mold with SCS micro-lens pattern.
In general, the curved structures have the engineering efficiency as well as a fine view compared with straight member. Also, composite materials are composed of two or more different materials to produce desirable properties for structural strength as compared to single ones. Shell structures with composite materials have many advantages in strength and weight reduction. Therefore, composite laminated conical shells are analyzed in this study. To solve differential equations of conical shells, this paper used finite difference method. Various parametric study according to the change of radius ratio, vertex angle and subtended angle are examined. The change of radius ratio, vertex angle and subtended angle mean the change from conical shells to cylindrical shells, conical shells to circular plates and open shells closed shells, respectively.
The mechanical characteristics of three types of core with two-dimensional isotropic patterns-triangular, hexagonal and starcell-were studied in applications to sandwich structures. The Young's modulus and shear modulus were calculated for the three core types in the direction normal to the faces. The compressive buckling strength and shear buckling strength were calculated by modeling each cell wall of the core as a plate under compressive or shear load. To verify this model, tests were conducted on scaled specimens to measures the compressive buckling strength of each core. The bending flexibilities of the three cores were also studied. Compliances for the three cores were measured using biaxial flexural tests. The three isotropic core patterns exhibited distinct characteristics. In the direction normal to the faces, all three cores had the same stiffness. However, the starcell core exhibited high flexibility compared to the other cores, indicating potential for application to curved sandwich structures.
A study to determine the structure-borne noise radiated by a dash panel of a real car is performed by using the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). The radiation efficiency is used to estimate the structure-borne noise radiated by a dash panel. The curved surfaces of a dash panel change the radiation efficiency. Experimental results of radiation efficiency of a simple rectangular plate and a dash panel show good agreements with the simulation results.
