Mathematics across the Curriculum: Educational Reform as a Problem Solving Activity

  • This paper is intended to document the development of the Mathematics across the Curriculum (MAC) movement, following a mathematics problem solving model. Of course, just as new, related problems often arise after we have completed the solution of a current mathematics problem, so too, many questions remain regarding the future of MAC. Although preliminary assessments have been favorable, no broad-based evaluation of the impact of MAC has been conducted. To what extent has the promise of increased student understanding of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines been realized? What can be done to overcome logistical obstacles preventing instructors from working together in real schools settings? Are changes in institutional culture and relationships among academics merely transitory? Is the development of a strong base of curricular materials forthcoming? In other words, will MAC reach a level of educational permanence, or ultimately be discarded as another interesting, but unmanageable instructional fad?

초등과학교육과정과 컴퓨터교육에 관한 연구 (A study on the Elementary Science Curriculum and Computer Based Education)

  • Computer based instruction in the elementary science curriculum will be played an important role through the fifth curriculum reform from the 1989 school year. This is essential for the science instruction because the strategies on the problem-solvings and inquiry approaches can be utilized for the science classroom. Computer education can be thought as the education about the computer and the education using the computer. Of them the education using the computer means the computer assisted instruction(CAI) what is called all the possible activities using the computer in the classroom. Student achievement as the result of CAI depends on the learning activities of students and the instructional techniques and strategies of teachers using the computer. However, computer based education to enhance the student achievement is pointed out the lacks of the standardized Korean alphabet code and the compatibility of qualified software. These problems will be relieved according to the coding for the Korean alphabet of SUPER PILOT program language.

Designing an Assessment to Measure Students' Inferential Reasoning in Statistics: The First Study, Development of a Test Blueprint

  • Accompanied with ongoing calls for reform in statistics curriculum, mathematics and statistics teachers purposefully have been reconsidering the curriculum and the content taught in statistics classes. Changes made are centered around statistical inference since teachers recognize that students struggle with understanding the ideas and concepts used in statistical reasoning. Despite the efforts to change the curriculum, studies are sparse on the topic of characterizing student learning and understanding of statistical inference. Moreover, there are no tools to evaluate students' statistical reasoning in a coherent way. In response to the need for a research instrument, in a series of research study, the researcher developed a reliable and valid measure to assess students' inferential reasoning in statistics (IRS). This paper describes processes of test blueprint development that has been conducted from review of the literature and expert reviews.

  • To educate students to adjust and lead their future society oriented on technologies and information communications, most of the countries in the world try to reform their traditional mathematics education. Contemporary Mathematics in Context (CMIC) developed by Core-Plus Mathematics Project in WMU has been developed in order to assist school districts in reforming their high schools mathematics programs in the United States, and $7^{th}$ Korean National Mathematics Curriculum was developed to guide reforming Korean mathematics program in 1997. In this presentation, by analyzing essential differences between the two curricula according to Korean Mathematics Curriculum, we may find some implications of CMIC for Korean mathematics education.

An Analysis of the Mathematical Tasks in the Korean Seventh Grade Mathematics Textbooks and Workbook

  • The Korean mathematical curriculum has been changed three times during the resent five years. It led to changes in textbook system. In the 2007 revised mathematics curriculum, workbook was developed focusing on student's self-oriented learning, effective practice in differentiated classroom, and mathematics problem solving considering individual difference. This paper examines the characteristics of the tasks and the way the tasks are organized in the textbooks and the workbook in accordance with the 2007 revised mathematics curriculum; comparing with the function section before and after the amendment. Researchers examine whether the textbook and workbook were accomplished the purpose with "cognitive expectation", "level of cognitive demand", "and "response types". Researchers revised framework of [Son, J. W. & Senk, S. (2010). How reform curricula in the USA and Korea present multiplication and division of fraction. Educ. Stud. Math 74(2), 117-142] to make them suitable for the function section at the seventh grade.

중등학교 환경교과 선택현황에 기초한 환경교육 확산방안 (The Spreading Strategy of Environmental Education Based on the Status of Selecting Rate of Environment Subject in Secondary School)

  • This study aims to explore the ways in spreading and maturing of environmental Education(EE) in secondary school. To deal with this issue, researchers investigate the actual conditions of EE and grope for the ways in spreading and maturing of EE. According to investigation, the selecting rate of environment subject in secondary school is about 3%(compared selecting rate of other subject matters) in 2003. Based on the result, this study suggests followings. First, sequencing strategy of EE curriculum will be expected very efficaciously. Secondly, there is need to empasize daily experiences of EE beyond the formal subject matter. Thirdly and ultimately, thers is need to reform school curriculum centered EE. Moreover, there is need to empasize teacher education for the environment not only pre service but also in-service teacher training.

중학교 수학익힘책 도입 과정에 대한 문헌 분석 및 개선 방안 탐색 (The Literature Analysis and Investigation of Improving Measures According to the Introduction of Math Activity Book in Middle School)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 2007년 개정 교육과정에 따라 도입된 수학익힘책의 도입과정에 대한 문헌 분석을 통해 수학익힘책의 개선방향을 탐색하는 것이다. 더 나아가 현재 개발 중인 수학 교육과정에 따라 새로 개발될 수학익힘책에 유의미한 개발 방향을 제시하는데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 첫째, 수학익힘책이 중등학교에서 도입하게 된 배경, 수학익힘책의 개발 방향 및 구성 체제, 수학익힘책의 활용의 실제에 대한 문헌을 분석하였고, 둘째, 문헌 분석을 기초로 중학교 수학익힘책에 대한 교사들의 반응을 조사하였으며, 셋째, 문헌 분석과 수학익힘책에 대한 교사들의 반응 분석을 기초로 수학익힘책의 개선 방안을 탐색하였다. 이를 통해, 수학익힘책 개발 연구의 개선, 수학익힘책 개발 목적 및 개발 방향의 개선, 수학익힘책 구성 체제의 개선, 수학익힘책 문제 배열의 개선 방향을 제시하였고, 현실 적합한 수학익힘책 개발을 위한 계기를 마련하였다.

개화기 초등수학교육 재음미 (A Study on Elementary Mathematics Education in the Age of Enlightenment)

  • 이 논문에서는 1876년에서 1910년에 이르는 개화기에 국가적 차원에서 일어난 초등수학교육의 변화를 정리하였다. 이를 위해 개화기를 갑오개혁이전, 갑오개혁, 통감부시기로 구분하고 각 시기별로 초등수학교육의 주요 변화를 살펴보았다. 갑오개혁이전시기부터 산술교육의 필요성이 인식되었으며, 갑오개혁시기에 산술교육은 본격적으로 국가교육과정이 되었다. 특히 갑오개혁시기에는 국한문혼용의 초등수학교과서가 발간되었다. 일제의 간섭이 본격화된 통감부 시기에는 '간이'와 '이용'의 교육정책에 따라 산술교육도 축소 또는 약화되었다. 이 시기에 발간된 초등교원용 산술서는 특기할 만하다.

서광초등학교(初等學校)(가칭(假稱)) 기본계획(基本計劃) (A Schematic Design Study for Seokwang Elementary School)

  • The objective of this study is to propese a model of elementary school whih reflects the goal of the 7th Reform in Primary & Seconday School Curriculum and attracts prtvate investment through Seokwang elementaey snhool in Seosan. The chief concept of architectural planning on this school is brought out by the analysis of the 7th Reform which pursues a self-regulative and initiative education. Based on this analysis, a proper dimensions of each space are proposed and a new model of elementary school which includes zoning by grade in grouping of the classrooms and outdoor spaces is proposed. As there is no domestic example of the elementary school complex with attraction of private investment in public schools, the matters which must be consideed in planning of this complex are unvectigated, and actual plan for Seokwang elementary school is proposed.
