  • Purpose: This study was conducted to provide basic data for the systematization of 13 areas related to Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). Methods: The three-phase study was conducted as follows. 1) review of APN system and curriculum, 2) Focus Group Interviews (FGI) with 9 APNs, 6 physicians, and 3 nursing professors on the APN system, 3) analysis of clinical practice of the 13 APN areas, and of the accreditation and certification system for APNs, medical board, and medical subspecialty board. Based on the above data, a systematic plan was drawn. Results: The 13 APN areas could be divided into 7 groups based on a review of the APN system and curriculum for the 13 areas. Analysis based on clinical practice showed that the 13 APN areas could be divided into 4 groups. Two themes and seven categories emerged in FGI. The two themes were 1) 13 APN areas that need to be discussed, 2) improving the curriculum for APN. Considering these themes from FGI and the system of the medical subspecialty board, results could be integrated into 2 groups - clinical area and non-clinical area. Conclusion: The 13 APN areas need to be integrated in order to activate the APN system. For that, further discussions on improvements and a standard curriculum according to legislation related to APN should be carried out.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the curricula of counseling-related departments in 35 offline colleges and 20 cyber colleges to analyze improvement points and development directions. Curriculum was analyzed with educational goals, open subjects, practice, and operation process. As a result of the study, the terms 'professional counselor, psychologist, and professional counselor' were used the most frequently in the educational goals of the department using the term 'counseling'. In the subjects, the most frequently opened courses were in the first year in counseling basics, in the second year in counseling theory and technique, in the third in psychological evaluation, in the second in statistics and research, and in the fourth in counseling practice. Counseling theory and practice, counseling process and interview technique are operated in the lower grades, and counseling practice, supervision, counseling practice and case study, and domestic and foreign internships were mostly operated in the fourth grade. Based on the above, we will discuss the improvement points and development direction of the curriculum of departments that use the term 'consultation' in offline and online universities.

  • It is becoming increasingly important for medical doctors to have a thorough understanding of human genetics and the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic testing, counseling, and treatment. As genetic engineering and technology evolves, medical doctors will find themselves called in to counsel patients about a rapidly increasing number of diseases for which genetic testing and treatments are available. Medical doctors will need to master a new set of principles and clinical skills. A lack of knowledge about these issues and problems may lead to serious, lifelong or even fatal negative effects on patients. Medical genetics has moved from the study of rare conditions to the illumination of disorders that impact the entire spectrum of medical practice. This study demonstrates several areas in which medical genetics is clearly an important tool in medical practice and the necessity of establishing new curriculum for clinical genetic education in Korea. Medical students nearing graduation may lack genetic knowledge that is essential for daily practice because genetics has little or no place in clinical teaching. Medical schools should make extensive curriculum changes to increase students' awareness of clinical genetics and its ethical implications. The medical school curriculum will need creative new approaches to keeping up with the rapid pace of evolution of clinical genetics.

  • The undergraduate curricula of the twenty pharmacy schools in Korea were analyzed in order to find out the relationship between the Korean Pharmacist Licensure Examination (KPLE) and the Pharmacy Education. The results of this survey indicated that the Pharmacy Education was highly related to KPLE. During the 1999 academic year, there were 1,853 undergraduate courses offered by the twenty pharmacy colleges excluding pre-pharmacy courses. Of the total courses 73\%$ were related to the twelve subject of KPLE. Eighty percent were related to the basic pharmacy. Only $13\%$ were related to the pharmacy practice. The courses related to the Medicinal Chemistry were 16\% of the basic pharmacy courses. The numbers and the names of the subjects of KPLE have not been change during the past 3- years. Recently, the names of the subjects of KPLE have not been changed during the past 30 years. Recently, the National Health Personnel Licensing Examination Board advised to change the courses from the drug-oriented curriculum to a practice-oriented one. Therefore, it will be better that the curriculum of the undergraduate pharmacy program to be re-organized focusing on the divisions of the courses, not on the name of the courses. The number of the under graduate courses should be reduced by combining the related courses. The more courses in the field of patient-oriented pharmacy practice are needed to be added to the undergraduate curriculum in order to produce the clinical pharmacists.

  • This study critically appraised the accumulated articles based on the critical science perspective on Korea's home economics education. The 55 articles published from 1993 to 2011 were identified and placed into three categories: Critical science paradigm, practical problem-focused curriculum, and systems of action. The common result across categories was that some authors did not fully understand the concepts of practice, a practical problem-focused curriculum, the practical reasoning process, and the systems of action. A positive outcome of including a critical science perspective in the Korean national curriculum will be seen when systems supporting this perspective, such as those providing more specific information on a critical science perspective and the relevant textbook accreditation standards, are available. We present a proposal based on considerations of a national curriculum, teacher education, relevant philosophical perspectives, and classroom practice.

  • Objects: This study was conducted to investigate the current educational environment of herbology and to develop a future-oriented curriculum for oriental medicine. The questionnaire used in this research was drawn up based on the current curriculum referring to the current curriculum of herbology and pharmacognosy. Methods: The survey was carried out presenting the questionnaires to a total 12,754 of the students and doctors of oriental medicine through e-mailing five times; of these, 2,074 replied. Results: 1. Among the respondents, about 97% agreed that it was necessary to revise and complement the current curriculum of herbology. 2. The respondents felt that the assigned lecture time of subject was "sufficient" (19%), "insufficient" (39%) and "average" (39%), respectively, and the level of lecture was "insufficient" (37%) or "average" (43%) respectively. According to priority, it showed that the contents which needed complement in lecture were discrimination of medicinal herbs (24%), practical use of action and indications (23%), and correlation with modern disease (21%). In theoretical lectures, 69% of the respondents agreed on the introduction of natural scientific methods 3. In practice, 51% of the respondents replied that the lecture time for practice was insufficient. The contents which needed to be complemented in practice were as follows: audio-visual materials for discrimination of medicinal herbs (22%), concrete exercise for the processing of medicinal herbs (21%), and attempts for the objective discrimination of medicinal herbs using instruments (microscope, analytical instrument, residual pesticide, heavy metal, genetic analysis) (16%). 70% replied that the discrimination of medicinal herbs of high price and rarity was "none or insufficient". 4. 56% replied that it was necessary to introduce and practice physicochemical analysis, and they showed higher requests according to the increase of their educational level. However, 86% replied that they had never experienced concrete attempts for objective discrimination of medicinal herbs, which seemed to indicate that, excepting some schools, practice exercise was rarely performed.
