  • In this work, effects of the blend composition composed of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt% of nylon 6 to epoxy (diglycidylether of bisphenol-A, DGEBA) resin were investigated in terms of cure kinetics and thermal stability by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As the content of the nylon 6 increased, the maximum exothermic temperature ($T_{max}$) and the value of cure activation energy ($E_a$) decreased. The maximum exothermic temperature of the blending samples decreased with increasing in nylon 6 content, resulting in the decrease in curing activation energy of them due to the rapid curing reaction with epoxy resin in this system. From TGA analysis results of the DGEBA/nylon 6, the thermal stability based on the thermal stability index ($A^*{\cdot}K^*$) and integral procedure decomposition temperature (IPDT) increased with increase in the nylon 6 content. This was because of the combination of DGEBA and nylon 6 having good heat resistance, resulting in improving thermal stability of the DGEBA/nylon 6.

  • Order of reaction, rate constant, activation energy for vulcanization reaction, crosslinking density, and elastic constant of the network produced by sulfur curing were investigated on the SBR/BR blends containing silica and carbon black under same cure system. The reaction order was shown to be first order regardless of filler types. The carbon black filled rubber compounds showed higher rate constant compared to silica filled compounds. But activation energy appeared to be same regardless of filler type and rubber blend ratio. The crosslinking density and elastic constant is higher in the carbon black filled compound compared to silica filled compounds because of strong interaction between rubber and carbon black. On the other hand, crosslinking density and elastic constant were decreased with increasing the butadine rubber content in rubber blends. From the comparison of combined sulfur content in the vulcanized rubber, sulfur content in the silica filled compound become constant 20min later after reaction initiates but sulfur content in the carbon black filled compound become constant 10min later after reaction starts. The silica compound has a longer induction time ($t_2$) and optimum cure time($t_{90}$) compared to those of the carbon black filled compound.

  • In this work, diglycidylether of bisphenol-S (DGEBS) epoxy resin was prepared by alkaline condensation of bisphenol-S (BPS) with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in the presence of NaOH catalyst. The structure of the synthesized DGEBS epoxy resin was confirmed by IR, NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. The curing reaction and glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of DGEBS epoxy resin cured with phthalic anhydride (PA) and tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (THPA) at curing agents were studied by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability of the cured specimen was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result, the activation energy ($E_a$) of DGEBS/PA system was higher than that of DGEBS/THPA system, whereas $T_g$, initial decomposed temperature (IDT), and decomposition activation energy ($E_t$) of DGEBS/PA were lower than those of DGEBS/THPA. This was probably due to the fact that the crosslinking density of DGEBS/THPA was increased by ring strain of curing agent.

  • The cure kinetics of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with 4, 4'-methylene dianiline (MDA) added succinonitrile was studied through the dynamic run method by applying the data to the Kissinger equation which analyses the effect of the heating rate on the temperature at maximum reaction rate using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analyzer in the range of 3$0^{\circ}C$-35$0^{\circ}C$. In the DGEBA/MDA system with SN, the activation energy ($E_a$) and the pre-exponential factor (A) were calculated. From these results, the rate constants (k) were obtained according to the different SN contents.

  • The di-functional epoxy resins, i.e., diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) and diglycidylethere of bisphenol F(DGEBF) were initiated by cationic catalyst, i.e., benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate(BQH) using electron-beam(EB) technique. And the effect of structure of DGEBA and DGEBF on thermal stabilities and cure behaviors was investigated. According to the experimental results, the decomposed activation energy based on Horowitz-Metzger method was higher in the case of DGEBA, but intergral procedural decomposition temperature(IPDT) of DGEBA was lower than DGEBF. This could be interpreted in terms of high crosslink density resulted from hydroxyl bond of DGEBF backbone. It was confirmed in increasing the hydroxyl band at $7000\;cm^{-1}$ and $5235\;cm^{-1}$ using near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS).

  • We studied the cure kinetics of the DGEBA(Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/MDA(4, 4' -methylene dianiline)/MN(Malononitrile)/HQ(Hydroquinone) system by Barrett method and Integral method with dynamic runs of differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Kinetic parameters such as activation energy and pre-exponential factor were obtained and reaction order was estimated roughly supposing that present system was adjusted to nth order reaction. The MN(Malononitrile) was introduced as a chain extender and HQ(Hydroquinone) as a reactive accelerator or catalyst.

  • $\alpha$,$\omega$-Bis(4-glycidyloxybenzylidene-4-aminophenyl)methane (BGBAM) was synthesized from the initial materials, 4-hydroxylbenzaldehyde (HBA), 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) and epichlorohydrin. The DSC trace for BGBAM shows two endotherms associated with the liquid crystalline phase transition around $104.2^{\circ}C$ and the isotropic transition around $171.2^{\circ}C$, and it also has a broad exotherm in the range of $178~300^{\circ}C$ due to the anionic homopolymerization of BGBAM. DSC curve for the curing of BGBAM with hexamethylene diamine (HMD) shows an endothermic peak around $93^{\circ}C$ attributed to the melting of BGBAM. It also has three exothermic peaks around $128.4^{\circ}C$ and $180.2^{\circ}C$ associated with the epoxide-amine reaction and weak peak in the range of $200~263^{\circ}C$ related to the anionic homopolymerization between the unreacted epoxide groups. The activation energy values of cure reaction by Kissinger method are 66.5, 67.3 and 90.6 kJ/mol for $T_{pl},\; T_{p2}\; and \;T_{p3},\; respectively$. The kinetic parameters by isoconverional method are similar value to those from Kissinger method.

  • In this study, the bisphenol-based DGEBA/GEBS blend systems were studied in cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, and fracture toughness of the casting specimen. The content of DGEBA/DCEBS was varied in 100 : 0, 90 : 10, 80 : 20, 70 : 30, and 60 : 40 wt%. The cure activation energies ($E_a$) of the blend systems were determined by Ozawa's equation. The thermal stabilities, including initial decomposed temperature (IDT), temperatures of maximum rate of degradation ($T_{max}$), and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) of the cured specimen were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). For the mechanical interfacial properties of the specimens, the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) test was performed and their fractured surfaces were examined by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, $E_a$, IPDT, and $K_{IC}$ show maximum values in the 20 wt% DGEBS content compared with the neat DGEBA resins. This was probably due to the fact that the elevated networks were farmed by the introduction of sulfonyl groups of the DCEBS resin.

  • Epoxy/carbon composite was used to prepare a bipolar plate for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Phenol novolac-type epoxy and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)-type epoxy mixture was used as a matrix and graphite powder, carbon fiber (CF) and graphite fiber (GF) were used as carbon materials. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the bipolar plate, surface-modified CF was incorporated into the epoxy/carbon composite. To determine the cure temperature of the epoxy mixture, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was performed and the data were introduced to Kissinger equation in order to get reaction activation energy and pre-exponential factor. Tensile and flexural strength was obtained by using universal testing machine (UTM). The surface morphology of the fractured specimen and the interfacial morphology between epoxy matrix and CF or GF were observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • The investigation of cure kinetics and morphology studies on DGEBA/PEI/Anhydride system were performed by differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Autocatalystic kinetics model was applied by isothermal scan test. Ozawa method and Kissinger method was applied by temperature scan. Activation energy was 95kJ/mol for neat DGEBA/NMA, 120kJ/mol for DGEBA/PEI(10p.h.r.)/NMA. The generation of secondary phase of PEI was observed and its size was grown up by increasing contents of PEI.
