  • Both in-process quality control and high reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is available at present to determine the real-time evaluation of automatic production quality control for friction welding of special hydraulic valve spool of 16mm in diameter. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the welded joints of $\phi16$ valve spool as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding.

  • In-process quality control and high reliability of the weld are the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. Experimental examinations and quantitative analysis were performed for the optimiaztion of similar friction welding of hydraulic valve spool steels(SNCM220, SCM435, SACM645, SCM415, ${\varphi}24). The quantitative correlations were found between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the fatigue life as well as weld strength and welding conditions. A real-time evaluation system was developed for the friction weld quality by AE.

  • Laboratory dynamic tests are carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of saturated sands in most countries. However, simple results such as the maximum cyclic shear stress and the number of cycles at initial liquefaction are used in the experimental assessment of liquefaction potential, even though various results can be obtained from the dynamic test. In addition, it seemed to be inefficient because more than three dynamic tests with different stress ratio have to be carried out to draw a liquefaction resistance experimental curve. To improve the present assessment method fur liquefaction potential, a new critical resistible characteristic far soil liquefaction is proposed and verified through conventional cyclic triaxial tests with Jumunjin sand. In the proposed method, various experimental data such as effective stress path, stress-strain relationship, and the change of excess pore water pressure can be used in the determination of cumulative plastic shear strains at every 1/4 cycle. Especially, the critical cumulative plastic shear strain to initiate liquefaction can be defined in a specific point called a phase change point in the effective stress path and it can be calculated from a hysteric curve of stress-strain relationship up to this point. Through this research, it is found that the proposed cumulative plastic shear strain can express the dissipated energy to resist dynamic loads and consider the realistic soil dynamic behavior of saturated sands reasonably. It is also found that the critical plastic shear strain can be used as a registible index of soils to represent the critical soil dynamic state, because it seems to include no effect of large deformation.

  • Three-point bending fatigue properties of austenitic 304 stainless steel sheets were investigated at room temperature and LNG temperature($-162^{\circ}C$) in the strain range from 0.43 to $1.7\%$. The fatigue properties at $-162^{\circ}C$ were superior to those at room temperature due to the higher volume fractions of deformation-induced martensite. The cyclic hardening behavior owing to the deformation- induced martensite transformation was detected in both specimens. In room temperature testing, the mean load amplitude increased steadily with cycles, meaning that cumulative plastic incubation strain was required for martensite transformation. On the contrary, in $-162^{\circ}C$ tested specimen, the mean load amplitude increased rapidly within a few cycles due to the rapid transformation of martensite, and slightly decreased after the maximum is reached probably due to dynamic recovery.

  • Development of Real-Time Quality Evaluation of Friction Welding by Acousitc Emission : Report 1 ABSTRACT : According as the friction welding has been increasingly applied in manufacturing various machine components because of its significant economic and technical advantages, one of the important concerns is the reliable quality monitoring method for a good weld quality with both joint strength and toughness in the process of its production. However no reliable nondestructive test method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the real-time evaluation of friction weld quality by acoustic emission, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was confirmed, through this study, that AE techniques can be reliably applied to evaluating the friction weld qualify with 100% joint strength, as the cumulative AE counts occurring during welding period were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds. • Existing shear wall system may cause ductility fallen to the structure which it is on because relatively weak concrete core would easy to be damaged. In this study, steel hysteresis dampers whose stiffness is higher than existing coupling beam and whose strength is easy to change depending on design load was used in coupling beam. The steel hysteresis damper was proposed for the shape connected in double in series, from this, several static test were conducted to verify structural performance of the damper. FEM analysis was also performed, then design equation were suggested.

  • Acoustic Emission (AE) technique was applied to stress corrosion cracking of Inconel 600 to investigate the AE capability of detecting crack growth and to obtain the relation between AE characteristics and crack mechanism. The specimens were heat-treated in two conditions (600$^{\circ}C$ for 30 hrs or 700 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr) and undergone CERT at two extension rates ( 2.5${\times}$10$^{-5}$ or 1.25${\times}$10$^{-4}$(mm/s)). It was found that the AE peak amplitude from plastic deformation was generally smaller than about 48dB (0.25mV), while Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) and ductile fracture produced higher values of 49 to 70dB (0.3mV to 3mV). The slopes of cumulative amplitude distribution (b-values) were linearly dependent on IGSCC susceptibility and the higher the susceptibility, the smaller the b-value. The monitoring of combined AE parameters such as event rate, amplitude, count and energy can provide effective means to clearly identify the transition from crack initiation and small crack growth to rapid growth of dominant cracks.
