Treatment, Disposal and Beneficial Use Option for Sewage Sludge (하수슬러지 처리기술 동향 및 최적화 처리방안)

  • Sewage sludge produced in Korea was 1,275,800 tons (dewatered sludge cake) per year in 1996, which is 3,495 tons per day, 0.303% of 11,526,100 tons per day of sewage treated in 79 sewage treatment plants. Sludge production has been and will be increasing in accordance with construction of new facilities for sewage treatment. Most of the sludge is currently disposed by landfill and ocean dumping, but it is becoming difficult to find suitable sites for landfill, particularly in big cities such as Seoul. In addition, rapid increase of landfill cost is anticipated in a near future. Current trend for sludge disposal in advanced countries is land application. Over the past 10 to 20 years in the United States, sludge management practices have changed significantly, moving from disposal to beneficial use. They use biosolid for utilization instead of sludge for disposal. Under the Clean Water Act of 1972, amended in 1987 by Congress, the U.S. EPA was required to develop regulations for the use and disposal of sewage sludge. The EPA assessed the potential for pollutants in sewage sludge to affect public health and the environment through a number of different routes of exposure. The Agency also assessed the potential risk to human health through contamination of drinking water sources or surface water when sludge is disposed on land. The Final Rules were signed by the EPA Administrator and were published (Federal Register, 1993). These rules state that sewage sludge shall not be applied to land if the concentration of any pollutant in the sludge exceeds the ceiling concentration. In addition, the cumulative loading rate for each pollutant shall not exceed the cumulative pollutant loading rate nor should the concentration of each pollutant in the sludge exceed the monthly average concentration for the pollutant. The annual pollutant loading rate generally applies to applications of sewage sludge on agricultural lands. The most popular beneficial use of sewage sludge is land application. The sludge has to be stabilized for appling to land. One of the stabilization process for sewage sludge is lime stabilization process. The stabilization process is consisted of the stabilizing process and the drying process. Stabilization reactor can be a drum type reactor in which a crossed mixer is equipped. The additive agents are a very reactive mixture of calcium oxide and others. The stabilized sludge is dried in sun drier or rotary kiln.

Comparison on the Dosimetry of OSLD and PLD Used in Nuclear Medicine (형광유리 선량계와 광자극 발광선량계를 이용한 핵의학과 선량 측정비교)

  • This study was conducted from July 1 to September 30, 2018 using Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dosimeter(OSLD) and photoluminescent glass dosimeter(PLD) to measure the 3-month exposure dose and the cumulative dose in the active working area of the nuclear medicine worker Respectively. As a result, the cumulative dose for three months in the worker and work area was measured as 1.97 mSv and 2.02 mSv in the PLD. The mean surface dose and the mean depth dose of the OSLD were measured to be 2.04 mSv. The difference in the total surface dose measured by the PLD and the OSLD was 0.66mSv and the total mean surface dose was 0.07mSv. The difference between the total depth dose and the total depth dose was 0.1mSv and 0.02mSv, respectively. It was found that the dose value of the OSLD was higher than that of the PLD. In addition, it was found that the maximum difference of 0.01mSv was observed between the PLD and the OSLD of the worker. For the dose measurement of the two dosimetry systems, there was no significant difference between the PLD and the OSLD in the surface dose of 0.239 (p>0.05). Also, the significance of PLD and OSLD in the deep dose was 0.109, which was not statistically significant (p>0.05).

Alleviation of PM2.5-associated Risk of Daily Influenza Hospitalization by COVID-19 Lockdown Measures: A Time-series Study in Northeastern Thailand

  • Objectives: Abrupt changes in air pollution levels associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak present a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of air pollution on influenza risk, at a time when emission sources were less active and personal hygiene practices were more rigorous. Methods: This time-series study examined the relationship between influenza cases (n=22 874) and air pollutant concentrations from 2018 to 2021, comparing the timeframes before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in and around Thailand's Khon Kaen province. Poisson generalized additive modeling was employed to estimate the relative risk of hospitalization for influenza associated with air pollutant levels. Results: Before the COVID-19 outbreak, both the average daily number of influenza hospitalizations and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 ㎛ or less (PM2.5) concentration exceeded those later observed during the pandemic (p<0.001). In single-pollutant models, a 10 ㎍/m3 increase in PM2.5 before COVID-19 was significantly associated with increased influenza risk upon exposure to cumulative-day lags, specifically lags 0-5 and 0-6 (p<0.01). After adjustment for co-pollutants, PM2.5 demonstrated the strongest effects at lags 0 and 4, with elevated risk found across all cumulative-day lags (0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 0-4, 0-5, and 0-6) and significantly greater risk in the winter and summer at lag 0-5 (p<0.01). However, the PM2.5 level was not significantly associated with influenza risk during the COVID-19 outbreak. Conclusions: Lockdown measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic could mitigate the risk of PM2.5-induced influenza. Effective regulatory actions in the context of COVID-19 may decrease PM2.5 emissions and improve hygiene practices, thereby reducing influenza hospitalizations.

Chromosome Aberration in Peripheral Lymphocyte of Radiation Workers in Hospital (병원내 방사선작업종사자들의 염색체이상빈도)

  • Cytogenetic studies were performed in peripheral blood lymphocytes from hospital workers occupationally exposed to low doses of radiation (0.30 - 40.07mSv). The workers were divided into three groups according to their job area : 18 diagnostic radiology, 17 therapeutic radiology, and 16 nuclear medicine. The control group consisted of 49 non-radiation workers with no history of exposure to radiation. A higher percentage of cells with aberration(1.275%) was observed in the workers compared to the controls(0.677%) and the difference was statistically significant(p<0.001). The frequency of chromosomal aberration was $0.706{\times}10^{-2}$/cell in the exposed and $0.344{\times}10^{-2}$/cell in the control(p<0.05). Chromosomal exchange frequency was $0.083{\times}10^{-2}$/cell in the control vs $0.245{\times}10^{-2}$/cell in the workers. There was no evidence of significant increase of chromosome aberration related to age or to the duration of employment. The frequency of chromosomal exchange in workers of nuclear medicine was $0.313{\times}10^{-2}$/cell, which was significantly higher than in the control($0.083{\times}10^{-2}$/cell) or other working groups: therapeutic radiology($0.265{\times}10^{-2}$/cell), and diagnostic radiology($0.167{\times}10^{-2}$/cell). No dose-effect relation was found between chromosome aberration and total cumulative doses, recent 5 yr, recent 2 yr cumulative dose. But in case of last 1 yr cumulative dose, dose-dependant increase was observed when controls were considered(p<0.05). The radiation dose which workers have received was much lower than the maximum permissible dose, but there was a significant difference in the frequency of chromosome aberration between occupationally exposed workers and control. So, it is clear that chromosome aberration is a quite sensitive indicator of radiation exposure and it can be detected at very low dose level of occupational exposure.

Deepest Dormancy Period in Strawberry 'Reiko' and Time for Starting Insulation in Semi-forcing With Lighting in Daegu Area ('여홍' 딸기의 대구지방 휴면최심기와 반촉성 보온개시기)

  • Seedlings of strawberry, 'Reiko' were planted in plastic pots of 24 cm in diameter in the middle of September in 1995, 1996, and 1997. Ten plants were transferred to greenhouse with artificial illumination at 5-day interval from late September to late January. The deepest dormancy of 'Reiko' in Daegu area was found to be on November 5, October 25, and October 31 in 1995, 1996, and 1997, respectively. The time for moving plants to make the plants grow in semi-dormant state in the greenhouse occurred between Nov. 10 and Nov. 20 in both 1995 and 1996, and between Nov. 10 and Nov. 30 in 1997. The time passing approximately 100-200 cumulative hours of exposure to below $5^{\circ}C$ canopy temperature from the peak dormancy, which is required for breaking dormancy of 'Reiko', was between November 16 and 25 in 1996, and November 24 and December 5 in 1997. 'Reiko' yielded high every year when seedlings were moved into greenhouse during the period of October to November. The plants gave good response to forcing culture under lighting. The right time for moving plants into greenhouse in semi-forcing culture appeared to be the time passing 50-150 cumulative hours of exposure to below $5^{\circ}C$ canopy temperature from the peak dormancy.

Effete of Ozone Uptake Rate on Photosynthesis and Antioxidant Activity in the Leaves of Betula Species (자작나무류 잎의 오존흡입량이 광합성 및 항산화효소 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to compare the physiological and biochemical responses of four Betula species in response to ozone, and to find out the relationship between ozone uptake rate and photosynthesis or antioxidant activity. One-year-old seedlings of four Betula sp, B. costata, B. davurica, B. platyphylla var, japonica, and B. ermani, exposed to 100 pub ozone concentration for 8h day$^{-1}$ for 5 weeks in fumigation chamber. Ozone uptake rate, photosynthesis, SOD and GR activity were measured in the leaves of four species once a week. Cumulative ozone uptake rate was largest in the loaves of B. costata(53.8 mmol m$^{-2}$ ), smallest in the leaves of B. davurica(35.5 mmol m$^{-2}$ ). Photosynthesis of four Betula sp. exposed to ozone reduced relative to control, but the photosynthetic responses with changing stomatal conductance were different among species. Ozone exposure increased SOD activities of four species at the early exposing period, but after a critical point SOD activity decreased gradually. GR activity of B. costata was similar to the change of SOD activity, but the others showed the different patterns from B. costata. In conclusion, decreasing both SOD and GR activity at the critical point, B. costata may be sensitive species in response to ozone. In contrast, the others may be resistant species, which gradually increase GR activity following ozone exposure. GR activity was not always in accord with the change of SOD activity against ozone uptake, and the different responses between species were supposed to be affected by the cumulative ozone uptake.

Evaluation of Reductive Effect of Exposure Dose by Using Air Gap Apron in Nuclear Medicine Related Work Environment (핵의학과 내 작업 환경에서 공기층 납치마의 피폭선량 감소 효과 평가)

  • In this study, we measured the dose reaching the OSLD dosimeter by using the regular lead apron, and air gap apron through 3 experiments, and researched the reductive effect of air gap apron on exposure dose based on the 140 keV gamma ray radiating from $^{99m}technetium$, which is the most commonly used in nuclear medicine. As a result, when the gap between the dosimeter and 0.2mm lead plate is 0 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.515 mSv, and when the gap between the dosimeter and lead plate is 20 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.138 mSv, which shows reductive effect of dose as much as 0.388 mSv. When the gap between the dosimeter and 0.5mm lead plate is 0 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.296 mSv, and when the gap between the dosimeter and lead plate is 20 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.075 mSv, which shows reductive effect of dose as much as 0.221 mSv. As we check the cumulative dosage for 3 days, the lead apron without air layer shows average 0.239 mSv, and the air gap apron shows 0.176 mSv, which is actually reduced by 0.062 mSv. As we check the cumulative dosage for a month, the lead apron without air layer shows 0.59 mSv, and the air gap apron shows 0.54 mSv, which is reduced by 0.05 mSv.

Control of Food Pests by $CO_{2}$ Modified Atmosphere: Effects of Packing Materials and Exposure Time on the Mortality of Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella (고농도 탄산가스 충전에 의한 식품 해충 방제: 거짓쌀도둑거저리와 화랑곡나방의 살충효과에 미치는 노출시간과 식품포장 재질의 영향)

  • Effects of three packing materials and exposure time on the mortality of Plodia interpunctella and Tribolium castaneum were studied using $CO_{2}-modified$ atmosphere control. Materials used were triple layered craft paper (KKK), triple layered craft paper with one laminate coating layer (KLK), and triple layered craft paper with one HD film coating layer (KHK). In the test balls (${\phi}1.2\;m$) containing 85% $CO_{2}-modified$ atmosphere, concentration of $CO_{2}$ in small packing envelopes ($9.8{\times}9.8cm$) made of the materials after one day was higher in KKK ($26.67{\pm}0.58%$) than KLK ($23.33{\pm}0.58%$) or KHK ($20.67{\pm}0.58%$). Both P. interpunctella and T. castaneum showed higher mortality in KKK than in either KLK or KHK Similar results were obtained by larger space ($9{\times}4{\times}3m$) and packing volume (20 kg) studies. The effect of the packing materials was clearer on T. castaneum more tolerant to $CO_{2}$ than P. interpunctella. Regression of the insect mortality on cumulative concentration time (${\int}_{0}^{t}c{\times}tdc{\approx}{\sum}concentration{\times}time$) was highly significant. Control of P. interpunctella and T. castaneum by $CO_{2}-modified$ atmosphere were discussed in relation to packing materials, cumulative concentration time of $CO_{2}$ and food products.

Factors associated with the survival and marginal bone loss of dental implants: a 5-year retrospective study (임플란트의 생존과 변연골 소실에 영향을 미치는 인자들)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term survival rate and peri-implant marginal bone loss related to multiple risk factors including the clinician's experience. Materials and Methods: Four hundred twenty implants in 146 patients, who had involved a supportive periodontal therapy program every 3 to 6 months and had follow up data for at least 5 years, were selected as the study group. Peri-implant marginal bone loss, data of demographic, implant and surgical characteristics were collected from peri-apical radiographs and chart review. Implant survival was regarded as the remaining with radiographic marginal bone level in excess of 50% of the fixture length for any reason. Results: The cumulative survival rate after 5 years of loading was 94.9%. In binary logistic regression analysis, smoking status (P = 0.033) and presence of spontaneous cover screw exposure (P < 0.001) were significantly related to 5-year survival of implants. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, smoking status (P < 0.001), type of abutment connection (P < 0.001) and implant surface (P = 0.033) were significantly related to peri-implant marginal bone level. And the year of resident was not statistically related to 5-year implant survival in simple logistic regression analysis (P = 0.171). Conclusion: Smoking status, spontaneous cover screw exposure, type of abutment connection and implant surface might influence the implant success. There was no significant correlation between the year of resident and implant failure.

The Role of CYP2B6*6 Gene Polymorphisms in 3,5,6-Trichloro-2-pyridinol Levels as a Biomarker of Chlorpyrifos Toxicity Among Indonesian Farmers

  • Objectives: One of the most widely used pesticides today is chlorpyrifos (CPF). Cytochrome P450 (CYP)2B6, the most prominent catalyst in CPF bioactivation, is highly polymorphic. The objective of our study was to evaluate the role of CYP2B6*6, which contains both 516G>T and 785A>G polymorphisms, in CPF toxicity, as represented by the concentration of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), among vegetable farmers in Central Java, Indonesia, where CPF has been commonly used. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 132 vegetable farmers. Individual socio-demographic and occupational characteristics, as determinants of TCPy levels, were obtained using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and subsequently used to estimate the cumulative exposure level (CEL). TCPy levels were detected with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. CYP2B6*6 gene polymorphisms were analyzed using a TaqMan® SNP Genotyping Assay and Sanger sequencing. Linear regression analysis was performed to analyze the association between TCPy, as a biomarker of CPF exposure, and its determinants. Results: The prevalence of CYP2B6*6 polymorphisms was 31% for *1/*1, 51% for *1/*6, and 18% for *6/*6. TCPy concentrations were higher among participants with CYP2B6*1/*1 than among those with *1/*6 or *6/*6 genotypes. CYP2B6*6 gene polymorphisms, smoking, CEL, body mass index, and spraying time were retained in the final linear regression model as determinants of TCPy. Conclusions: The results suggest that CYP2B6*6 gene polymorphisms may play an important role in influencing susceptibility to CPF exposure. CYP2B6*6 gene polymorphisms together with CEL, smoking habits, body mass index, and spraying time were the determinants of urinary TCPy concentrations, as a biomarker of CPF toxicity.
