  • In an information-oriented and internationalized society of the future, the quality and the price of goods made by each country will be equalized. That eliminates competition. But the design and appearance of products is an important factor in international competition. Indeed, design symbolizes a country's culture visually, and it can show the cultural identity and originality of a nation in international society. And that will play an important part that can contribute to creating added value. It is necessary to revive our people's old lyrical stories which are far away from our memory, and we badly need design development to revive traditional cultural merchandise through visual modernization. In this study, I chose lotus as the subject material of textile design development. And my intention for this study is to reflect Korean traditional cultural value as much as I can, and to develop textile design of Korean images by adding modern scenes. Also, I intend to print them on fabric, and apply them to cultural merchandise including scarves and ties, by using digital textile printing systems. The reasons for doing so, are to create high added value, and to let other peoples of the world, know about our excellent culture.

  • The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the meaning of mathematical literacy based on the investigation of the nature of mathematical knowledge communicated in university level mathematics classes. The analysis of classroom discourse has revealed three different kinds of mathematical knowledge circulated in mathematics class, which include 'factual mathematics', 'mathematical fantasy', and 'mathematical savior faire.' The fact that a mathematics teacher delivers diverse categories of mathematics knowledge suggests that the mathematical literacy is not confined to the development of technical competence. More specifically, the kinds of mathematical knowledge identified above tell that mathematical literacy developed through learning mathematics reflects the cultural norms and values of doing mathematics. This means that mathematical literacy is not merely involve with technical competence but rather with cultural competence. In this regard, this paper highlights the meaning of mathematical literacy as a cultural identity, which has been underestimated in the theory and practice of mathematics education dominated by technocracy of the twentieth century In particular, the notion of mathematical savior faire implies that teaching and teaming mathematics ultimately deals with a system of cultural meaning. Hence, through learning mathematics, a learner gets transformed as a whole person according to the cultural norms and values. In this regard, it is concluded that mathematical literacy can be considered as a necessary condition to become a competent member of mathematics community sharing cultural norms of doing mathematics as well as a repertoire of mathematical skills.

The following findings were gathered: as a language teaching institution and information exchange platform, Confucius Institute has the ability to share trade information and increase trade opportunities; to improve cultural identity and reduce transaction costs; to promote cultural communication and integration, and drive the development of related industries. The internal disadvantages were mainly reflected in the mismatch between the global regional distribution structure of Confucius Institutes, and the economic and trade structure, such as, the asymmetry between language, culture output, and demand. In addition, the management mechanism was not perfect. External opportunities were mainly new opportunities brought by economic globalization, cultural diversity, and the development of the Belt and Road initiative. External challenges were mainly influenced by the China threat theory and the fierce cultural competition among countries. The corresponding countermeasures were put forward based on the advantages of the platform and grasping the external opportunities: improving the quality of operation and speeding up the localization process; respecting cultural differences and realizing cultural common learning; seeking multilateral cooperation and enhancing the capacity for independent development.

  • The purpose of this essay explores a critical review of the Korean critical communication studies focused on the problematic of cultural studies and political economy in 2000s. The findings are as follows; The 'consumer turn' or 'audience turn' in new revisionism modelling John Fiske's cultural studies has been interpreted not to complement but to substitute the necessary criticism of the post-authoritarian media establishment of Korea at that time, arising identity crisis of Korean cultural studies as one of the critical camp. On other side, however, some political economy studies close to the unilinear theses of orthodox marxism has been appraised to neglect the complex process and structure of media and cultural production as well. While the press war between the market-dominant dailies and some progressive dailies has given rise to a whole debate as expected in consolidating period of Korean emerging democracy, the conjucturalism as modelled by Hall's 'authoritarian populism' failed to initiate a new theo tical practice in Korea. Finally, this review essay propose the some new research issues that would converge cultural studies and political economy, modernism and postmodernism; citizenship vs 'cultural citizenship'(valuing the private identity and gender) or Habermasian public sphere vs 'cultural public sphere', the culture of production, (modern)citizen/(postmodern)consumer(recently debated in English media policy), 'differentiation' in capitalist production and 'difference' in consumer sovereignty, 21c future vision of public service broadcasting as one of the 20c institutions.

  • The movie costumes may serve to change individuals'ego identity, shift a gender identity to another one and make multiple and plural gender identities shared. The unique identities shown in movies can influence the audience to the extent that they will imitate characters's costumes or appearance in their real life, replacing their inner, unrealizable and private fantasy with real one. The purpose of this study is to review the movies produced in 1930's and thereafter by categorizing the socio-cultural gender concepts into masculinity and feminity. Masculinity and Feminity are not attributions fixed by some physical characteristics, but it tends to be changed or expended by some social factors over time. In short, it may be a flexible, plural, individual and self-introspecive attribute. Movies present diverse types of masculinity and feminity, and in particular, the movie costumes specify them. In other words, the costumes may be model means expressing the masculinity and feminity, and the gender identities shown in the movies tend to be imitated, re-created or assumed by the audience. All in all, the movie costumes serve to take on the confrontation of masculinity and feminity between inner, unrealizable and private fantasy and external reality and thereby, expand it from internal to external issue and thus, change or reform masculinity and feminity.

This study also aims to understand the definition and characteristics of indie fashion in Korean culture. A rigorous study on indie fashion has not yet been done; therefore, this study was conducted through both a literature study and empirical study. The empirical study asked individuals who engage in indie fashion to provide opinions on the definition and characteristics of indie fashion. The results are as follow. First, indie fashion does not impose conformity upon an individual nor does it pursue differentiation. Second, indie fashion based on self-identity is characterized by an individual's consistent and unchanging style. Third, images (or styles of indie fashion) cannot be uniformly defined as styles different from one individual to another. Fourth, indie fashion can be defined as when an individual perceives themselves as pursuing indie spirit and its attitude. Next was an empirical study that showed in what position indie fashion is and who the fashion leader is in indie fashion. People who enjoy indie fashion said that (regarding indie fashion) it exists independent from the flow of trends as it regards personal values and identity as important.

  • The purpose of this study is to qualitatively investigate how career women form their self-identity in relationship to their parents from the viewpoint of life-span development, and to provide practical information helpful for understanding the change of relationship between parents and adult children and forming desirable parents-daughter relationships by developing the substance theory which suits the socio-cultural context of Korea. In this study, 24 unmarried women who have parents and engage in professional jobs were selected for an in-depth interview. From the findings of this study, 67 concepts, 29 subordinate categories and 13 categories were extracted during the process of open-coding; a research model was then constructed according to the paradigm of the grounded theory. It was found that there are three types: the reality-convinced type, the conflict-compromising type and the self-regulated type who "persistently worry about themselves and try to develop". These results verify the process of career women "worrying about themselves and developing constantly" and its structure by forming their self-identities, adjusting the effects of several contextual factors and using mediatory strategies in the developmental process of self-identity.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the examples of using illustration as a strategic factor of composing brand cultures and as a factor for brand identity design. Through analyzing the external characteristics and the internal characteristics of illustration, this study will give suggestions on ways to apply the examples to real design. Illustration in external characteristics is investigated as a case of applying it directly to fashion design and to fashion marketing. Most of the fashion items were printed or weaved and most of the bags, shoes, and accessories were printed on the cover, attached as a patch, and expressed three-dimensionally. Illustration in internal characteristics is investigated as fixing and expansion of brand image, improving artistic and emotional value of brand, vitalization of masstige items, and cultural support and expression of social responsibility. The three themes used to develop the illustrations of "Hello ZIBI", which was used in this study, were "Graphic", "Forest" and "Flower", and these were based on modified brand symbol. Casual brands grafted fashion item designs onto T-shirts, bags, hats, and scarves. Marketing items were designed as shopping bags that could reflect brand image, as well as other items, such as key holders, mug cups, and tumblers, with designs that targeted specific age groups.
