Comparisons of the physico-chemical characteristics between white Atlantic potatoes and violet Bora Valley potatoes were performed. According to the results, Bora Valley had 7% higher moisture content than Atlantic, but there were no differences in crude fat and crude ash contents. Bora Valley, however, had about 3% less crude protein content than Atlantic. In a vitamin C analysis by HPLC, the Atlantic and Bora Valley potatoes contained 14% and 39% vitamin C, respectively, indicating that Bora Valley contained about twice as much of the vitamin as Atlantic. In a vitamin C analysis by HPLC, the Atlantic and Bora Valley potatoes contained 14% and 39% vitamin C, respectively, The dietary fiber content of Bora Valley was 3.12 g per 100 g higher than that of the Atlantic variety. While Atlantic contained neither glucose nor fructose, both sugars were measured in the Bora Valley potatoes, and there was no difference in sucrose content between the cultivar.
Excessive soil water at vegetative growth stages during the rainy season induces yield losses in soybeans. Our objectives were to obtain basic information about the cultivar differences and to understand the stress-tolerance process for due to excessive soil water. Previous experiments revealed soybean genotypic differences in tolerance to excessive soil water. A field experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of Korea University near Seoul on 21 May 1998. Soybean[Glycine max (L.) Merrill] cultivars, 'Hannamkong' (sensitive) and 'Taekwan-gkong'(tolerant) were planted in vinyl-lined plots(1.2 x 4.2 x 0.3 m deep) and control plots. Drip irrigation began at VI growth stage to submerge the soil surface. Three weeks of excessive soil water treatment reduced all growth parameters measured to soybean plants. Excessive soil water stress resulted in decreases of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Cu, and increases of Fe and Mn contents in soybean leaves. The stress index of tolerant cultivars under excessive soil water showed no large difference in soybean growth characteristics measured at three growth stages. However, K, Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn contents in soybean leaves appeared to differ between sensitive and tolerant cultivars. From the above results, stress and tolerance indices are proposed for a method to test cultivar differences in plant responses within a species under adverse growth environments.
This study was carried out to investigate the correlation between root diameter and ginsenoside composition of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer cultivar Yunpoong. Dry matter ratio of main root was a little higher than that of lateral root and fine root, and that was higher by the increase of root diameter in the same root parts. Total ginsenosides composition of main and lateral roots increased by the decrease of root diameter, especially in lateral root. Similar resulted in fine root, but there was no significant difference where root diameter was below 2.5 mm. Except for ginsenoside-$Rg_1$, other ginsenosides component, PDs, PTs and total ginsenosides had highly negative correlation with the root diameter within whole root, main root+lateral root and lateral root+fine root, while $Rg_1$ had positive correlation with the root diameter.

Crop models have been used to predict yield under diverse environmental and cultivation conditions, which can be used to support decisions on the management of forage crop. Cultivar parameters are one of required inputs to crop models in order to represent genetic properties for a given forage cultivar. The objectives of this study were to compare calibration and ensemble approaches in order to minimize the uncertainty of crop yield estimates using the SIMPLE crop model. Cultivar parameters were calibrated using Log-likelihood (LL) and Generic Composite Similarity Measure (GCSM) as an objective function for Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm. In total, 20 sets of cultivar parameters were generated for each method. Two types of ensemble approach. First type of ensemble approach was the average of model outputs (Eem), using individual parameters. The second ensemble approach was model output (Epm) of cultivar parameter obtained by averaging given 20 sets of parameters. Comparison was done for each cultivar and for each error calculation methods. 'Jowoo' and 'Yeongwoo', which are forage rice cultivars used in Korea, were subject to the parameter calibration. Yield data were obtained from experiment fields at Suwon, Jeonju, Naju and I ksan. Data for 2013, 2014 and 2016 were used for parameter calibration. For validation, yield data reported from 2016 to 2018 at Suwon was used. Initial calibration indicated that genetic coefficients obtained by LL were distributed in a narrower range than coefficients obtained by GCSM. A two-sample t-test was performed to compare between different methods of ensemble approaches and no significant difference was found between them. Uncertainty of GCSM can be neutralized by adjusting the acceptance probability. The other ensemble method (Epm) indicates that the uncertainty can be reduced with less computation using ensemble approach.
There is a difference in the inhibitory effects to supplemental UVB (wavelengths 280 to 320 nm) among Japanese rice (Oryza sativa L.), the cultivar Norin I is less resistant while the cultivar Sasanishiki is resistant. UVB induces photodamage in DNA. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) is a major UV-induced DNA lesion. Photorepair, which is mediated by photolyase, is the major pathway in plants for repairing CPD. We have analyzed CPD induction and repair in Sasanishiki and its close relative Norin I using alkaline agarose gel electrophoresis. Norin I is deficient in CPD photoreactivation and excision, thus UV sensitivity correlates with deficient dimer repair [I]. The photorepair deficiency in Norin I results from a functionally altered photolyase with a photoflash analysis [2]. In this paper, we examined the UVB-sensitivity of several other UV-sensitive and -resistant cultivars and found that the CPD photolyase activity was deficient in UV-sensitive ones. It was also evident that there was a variation in the deduced amino acid sequences of CPD photolyases of the UV-sensitive and -resistant cultivars, whereas each deduced amino acid sequence of the UV-sensitive cultivars and of the UV-resistant ones was the same. These results suggest that the difference in the CPD photolyases of UV-sensitive and -resistant rice might be due to the structural alteration of CPD photolyase.

Fiber characteristics and fiber distribution of thermomechanical pulp(TMP), bisulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(bisulfite CTMP), neutral sulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(neutral sulfite CTMP) from kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L., Malvaceae) cultivar Tainug-2 cultivated in the reclaimed land of Korea were examined to use effectively nonwood fibers as an alternative raw material sources for papermaking. Yields of TMP and CTMP from kenaf were lower than those of TMP from hardwoods and CTMP from softwoods and hardwoods. Bark fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 ranged 2.04 to 2.30 mm long and $18.7{\sim}19.7{\mu}m$ width. Core fibers averaged 0.63 to 0.80 mm long and $29.5{\sim}31.4{\mu}m$ wide. Coarseness of bark fiber was higher than that of core fiber, and fiber from TMP were higher than those from both bisulfite CTMP and neutral sulfite CTMP. Curl indexes of bark fibers were higher than those of core fibers. However curl indexes were not significantly affected by the pulping conditions. Short fiber distributions were higher in core fibers from TMP and CTMP and long fiber distributions were higher in bark fibers. There was no significant difference in fiber distribution of whole and core fibers obtained from TMP and CTMP, Fibers from neutral sulfite CTMP, however, exhibited a little higher long fiber distribution. Distinct difference in anatomical characteristics was found between core and bast fibers of kenaf plant. Parenchyma cell, pith parenchyma cell and vessel were observed in core fibers and bast fiber in bast sections.
To identify the evidence in tolerance to oxyfluorfen between selected rice cultivars (cv. Chokoto as the tolerant and cv. Weld Pally as the susceptible), the differences in ehtylene evolution, chlorophyll contents and electro-conductivity as affected by various concentrations of oxyfluorfen were assessed. -Under 10$^{-5}$ M oxyfluorfen, the susceptible cultivar showed rapid and higher rate of ethylene evolution, and under 10$^{-4}$ M oxyfluorfen, less difference in ethylene evolution between both cultivars. -Upto 10$^{-6}$ M oxyfluorfen, no difference in chlorophyll contents of both cultivars, however, at 10$^{-5}$ ~10$^{-4}$ M, the susceptible showed as less chlorophyll contents as half of the tolerant. At 10$^{-3}$ M, both cultivars showed complete decomposition of chlorophyll. -At 10$^{-4}$ ~10$^{-3}$ M oxyfluorfen. both cultivars indicate the increased rate in electro-conductivity, and the susceptible cultivar released as much electrolytes as 10% of the tolerant.
Freezing resistance of apple (Malus pumila) cultivars was measured to find out the most cold hardy apple variety among the five cultivars which are promissing in Korea. The measurement of freezing resistance for two varieties of dwarf interstock, was also included to compare the cold hardiness among scions and interstocks. The freezing resistance was in order from lowest to highest; winter bud, cambium, xylem ray parenchyma and bark cortex in all cultivars except EM26. The difference in cold hardiness among cultivars and interstocks was not consistent among tissue parts of twig except in cultivar Nugget-spur of which all tissue parts showed least cold hardiness. The difference among tissue parts with in a cultivar was discussed in terms of choosing the most cold hardy, and the most resistant cultivars to late frost damage.
The contents of total lipids and their components of brown rice grain were studied for 5 colored rice cultivars, 1 aromatic rice cultivar and 1 normal rice cultivar grown in Korea. The total lipid contents ranged 2.04 to 4.69% based on total dry weight. The Tohoku #149 showed the highest content which was followed by Hansanheukmi and Sanghaehyang-hyeolna. The lowest content were observed in three cultivars, Heuknambyeo, Hyangnambyo and Dongjinbyeo which showed no difference among cultivars. The main classes of the total lipid were triglyceride, diglyceride, free sterol, free fatty acid and sterol esters in all cultivars examined. The ratio of triglyceride in total lipid was high in colored rice and aromatic rice compared to Dongjinbyeo which is normal rice cultivars, but the ratio of diglyceride was high in Dongjinbyeo. The major fatty acid compositions in the cultivars examined were linoleic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid. There was a varietal difference in fatty acid composition, for example, erucic acid was detected in aromatic and colored rices cultivars, while none of this compound was found in Dongjinbyeo.

The interaction between Agrobacterium and soybean has been studied at the transcriptome level but not at the metabolic level. However, it is necessary to investigate the difference in metabolites between susceptible and non-susceptible cultivars for high efficiency transformation. We investigated the difference in metabolites from sonicated soybean cotyledons of Korean cultivars and Bert cultivar. To identify difference in metabolites, sonicated extracts were analysed by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR/MS). The soybean cultivars were classified by susceptibility using green fluorescent protein expression. We found a difference in metabolites between the high susceptible and low susceptible cultivars. The FT-ICR/MS experimental m/z data of different metabolites were compared with theoretical m/z in KNApSAcK database. The candidate list was made using KNApSAcK and focused on phenolic compounds. These candidate metabolites are speculated to influence factors in the interaction. This list of candidates may be useful to investigate the interaction between Agrobacterium and plants to increase transformation efficiency.
