  • In this experiment, gene actions were analysized for seven barley parents in order to obtain basic information on their genetic improvement by diallel crosses. The results obtained were summarized as follows. In analysis of variance, additive, dominant, maternal and reciprocal effects were observed significantly for culm length, tiller number, number of spiked per plant, culm diameter, awn length, leaf width, number of grains per spike, and 1000 grain weight. Over-dominance was shown by Vr-Wr graphic analysis in five characters such as tiller number, number of spikes per plant, length of flag leaf, number of grains per spike, and 1000 grain weight, and partial dominance in four characters such as culm length, culm diameter, awn length, and leaf width. Component of genetic varience analyzed for four characters such as culm diameter, awn length, length of flag leaf, and leaf width showed that additive effects were higher than dominant effects. Culm length, tiller number, number of spikes per plant, number of grains per spike, and 1000 grain weight showed dominant effects higher than additive effects. The narrow-sense heritability for awn length, leaf width, and number of grains per spike showed high values as more than 0.62, while broad-sense heritability for culm length, number of spikes per plant, culm diameter, awn length, leaf width, number of grains per spike, and 1000 grain weight showed high values as more than 0.65.

  • Various types of short culm rice mutants were obtained by means of gamma-ray irradiation. In the present paper morphological observation and analysis of silicate content of the mutants are reported. 1. Short culm type had more useful characters than bushy and dwarf types. 2. In short culm and bushy types the number of nodes both above and under ground was similar to the mother varieties, while in dwarf type it decreased. 3. In short culm types the variation of length of above-ground culm and internodes tended to vary relattive to the mother varieties. 4. Positive correlation was found between culm length and the first and fourth internode length in short culm type. 5. Silicate content increased in short culm type-the increment being variety specific.

  • This study was conducted to investigate a potential utilitization of multivariate statistical analysis(Factor analysis, Discrimination analysis) on interpretation of rice plant lodging reason. Rice plants were sampled in paddy around Taegu city at from 25 to 29 of September in 2000. Mineral nutrient content(phosphate, potassium) of rice plant were significantly higher at 99% level, Silicate content were lower at 95% level in lodged samples than in normal. Plant characteristics associate with lodging(Culm length, second and third internode length, bight of center gravity) were significantly longer in lodged rice plant than in non lodged. Result of Factor analysis were that first principle component were culm length, second(N2) and third internode length(N3), second principle component were Ca content, first internode length(N1) and N3/culm length, third principle component were center gravity length(G) and G/culm length, fourth were nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium content, fifth were N2/culm length, N2+N3/culm length, Sixth was silicate content of rice plant. Linear discriminant equation distinguished lodged rice plants with non lodged rice plants very well. Prediction value was 100%, most explainable variable were phosphate content, culm length and third length.

  • To determine how closely related to field lodging for several characters affecting the field lodging for several characters affecting field lodging, and to obtain the basic information for selection of lodging resistance genotype, an experiment was conducted with 10 varieties from May to Oct., 1990 at the experimental field in Sunchon Xational University. Culm length, dry weight per unit culm length (W/1), bending moment per unit culm diameter (W1/d), lodging index (L), bending load ratio (W1/P), and index of critical lodging load(W$_{s}$$^{2}$/1$^4$) were the most closely related characters to field lodging. Culm length showed highly significant positive correlation coefficient with field lodging(r=0.7607), but it may be undesirable to judge lodging resistance of genotype by culm length itself without consideration of culm stiffness. Considering the difficulty and time-consuming to measure the character, clum length, W/1, W1/d, and W$_{s}$$^{2}$/1$^4$ were easy to measure and hence would be the most useful variables to judge the lodging resistance of genotype. Culm diameter, cross sectional area of culm, thickness of culm wall, and the second inertia moment of cross section of culm were not correlated with field lodging at all. Breaking strength of culm showed significantly negative correlation coefficient (r=-0.3986) with field lodging.ing.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the main effects and pleiotropic effects of two comparable isogenic lines for culm and spike length in hulled barley and observed various agronomic characteristics, yield and yield components under the conditions of heavy fertilizer application and high planting densities. Three isogenic lines, culm, spike and culm and spike, were planted and to obtain basic data for improving high-yielding and quality of hulled barley at Experiment Farm, Dankook Univ., Cheonan city in 1985. Differences of culm length between two comparable isogenic lines, short culmed line (SCL) and medium culmed line (MCL), in isogenic lines for culm length showed highly significant differences. And differences of spike length between two comparable isogenic lines, short spike line (SSL) and medium spike line (MSL), in isogenic lines for spike length showed highly significant differences. Differences of culm and spike length between two comparable isogenic lines, short culmed and spike line (SCSSL) and medium culmed and spike line (MCMSL), short culmed and spike line (SCSSL) and long culmed and spike line (LCLSL), in isogenic lines for culm and spike length showed highly significant differences. Characteristics affected highly by the genes of culm length in isogenic lines for culm length were heading days, the 1st and 2nd internode length, No. of grains per spike, No. of spikes/m$^2$, and one litre weight. Characteristics affected highly by the genes of spike length in isogenic lines for spike length were No. of spike nodes, heading days, maturity days, thousand grain weight and one litre weight. Characteristics affected highly by the genes of culm and spike length in isogenic lines for culm and spike length were No. of spike nodes, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th internode length, thousand grain weight and grain yield. Grain yield of SCL, MSL, MCMSL and SCSSL was more than grain yield of MCL, SSL, SCSSL and LCLSL, respectively. Maturity days of SCL, MSL, SCSSL and LSLSL were faster than maturity days of MCL, SSL, MCMSL and SCSSL, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to identify the variation of culm characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides associated with attitudinal gradient in Mt. Jiri. The results obtained were summarized as follows : It was estimated that the average temperature at the altitude of 400 meters of Mt. Jiri was $12^{\circ}C$ which was closely associated with the horizontal distributions. It was observed that frequency distribution of the culm height, D.E.H. and clear length from the altitude of 200 meters to 400 meters shown at higher than that from 500 meters to 600 meters, and that frequency of clear length/culm height showed about equal for both altitude ranges. In the case of culm height, D.E.H. and clear length/culm height, coefficients of variation ranged from 15 percent to 25 percent, and those of clear length were over 25 percent for both altitude ranges. It was observed that culm height, D.E.H., clear length and clear length/culm height among each altitude ranges were significant at the 1 percent level. The Duncan's Test of culm characteristics among altitude ranges distinguished bamboos of below 400 meters from bamboos of over 500 meters. The correlation coefficients among culm characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides associated with attitudinal gradient were shown to be highly significant. In conclusion, the variation of calm characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides was large for below 400 meters and these results suggest that planting of the species should be done below 400 meters.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the genetic parameters such as combining ability, heritabilities and correlation coefficients forsome agronomic characters by 6$\times$6 dialled crosses of barley. The results obtained were summarized as follows. Mean squares of general combining ability(GCA) and specific combining ability(SCA) were significant for all characters observed. Mean squares of general combining ability for all characters were expressed as higher values than those of specific combining ability. Jecheon #5 showed the high general combining ability effects for culm length, and Waegwanpimack #1 showed the highest general combining ability effects for tiller number. Cygne also showed the high general combining ability effects for spike length and 1,000 grains weight. Furthermore, Plumage was expressed with the highest general combining ability effects for spike length and 1,000 grains weight. Furthermore, Plumage was expressed with the highest general combining ability effects for number of grains per spike. In specific combining ability effects, Samdugjeonbug # 45$\times$Plumage showed the high value for culm length, and Suwon #6 $\times$Waegwanpimack #1$\times$ was expressed with the highest specific combining ability effects for tiller number. Jecheon #5$\times$Plumage also showed the high specific combining ability effects for spike length and number of grains per spike. Suwon #6$\times$Cygne showed the high specific combining ability effects for 1,000 grains weight. The heritabilities of spike length an number of grains per spike were over 90%. In correlation coefficients among characters, relationships between culm length and tiller number, culm length and spike length, culm length and 1,000 grains weight, and spike length and 1,000 grains weight showed highly positively correlation.
