This experiment was to evaluate the growth characteristics of lodging resistance cultivated at sandbed in rice varieties. Five varieties were used in this studies. The leaf area, leaf dry weight, culm dry weight and total dry weight of cultivated rice seedling at sandbed showed the maximal values at heading stage, but decreased according to growth development. The number of newly developed roots of rice seedlings cultivated at sand pot were the most at the 30 days seedling stage, but those were decreasing at 40 to 45 days seedling stage. Cheongmyungbyeo and Dongjinbyeo showed the most vigor in newly developed roots. The bending moment at breaking of rice internodes were the largest at the 4th node, but decreased at the top internodes. Cheongmyungbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were proved lodging resistant varieties by the bending moment. The weight of culm base was positively correlated with bending moment at breaking of rice culm, but lodging index was negatively correlated weight of culm base and root dry weight, respectively.
These experiments were conducted to investigate variation of physical characteristics of the culm related to lodging resistance by nitrogen levels under direct seeding on flooded paddy surface. The number of seedling per m$^2$ were from 103 to 110 plants, and seedling ratios were ranged from 66.7% to 71.2%. The lodging occurrence were increased in order to the nitrogen levels 15 kg, 10 kg, 5 kg /10a, and the lodging resistant varieties ; Dongjinbyeo and Cheongmyungbyeo showed less values of field lodging than those of lodging susceptible varieties ; Daecheongbyeo, Palgongbyeo and H waseongbyeo. The lodging resistance was decreased in semidwarf varieties compare with long culm varieties, but Dongjinbyeo, long culm variety has lodging resistance. The occurrence of lodging decreased with lower values in top moment, but with higher values in the breaking moment with leaf sheath. The root dry weight positively correlated with weight of culm base, but modulus of section was negatively correlated with bending curvature, respectively.

Culm cutting is very effective and convenient method for asexual propagation and even much less destructive than the other ways such as excavation of rhizomes. Despite that culm cutting is such a useful method, only few investigations for raising its efficiency have been carried out. We tried to examine the effect of different geographical populations and cutting sections on the shoot emergence, biomass production and its allocation in terms of cutting efficiency. Culms were sampled from three environmentally distinct wetlands : riparian marsh, salt marsh and montane fen and then they were cut separately into four sections from the bottom to the top part. Both factors of different population and section affected the shoot emergence together. Middle parts on the culm always showed more shoot emergence irrespective of different population. On the other hand, first section from salt marsh and fourth section from the montane fen did not exhibit any shoot emergence. Significant difference in increase of shoot emergence between different sections during investigation period was confirmed only from salt marsh population. Not only different population but also appropriate cutting section should be considered together for better efficiency in cutting of reed culms.
To determine anti-lodging effect of paclobutrazol and its influence on yield of rice, paclobutrazol was applied at 12 and 18g ai/10a to cv. Nakdongbyeo and cv. Seomjinbyeo 20, 15, and 10 days before heading under 12 and 20kg/10a nitrogen conditions. 1. Paclobutrazol reduced internode length of rice, especially internode N3. Higher suppression of stem of both cultivars and reduction of ear length in cv. Nakdongbyeo were observed when paclohutrazol was applied at 18g ai/10a 15 and 20 days before heading. 2. Paclobutrazol increased culm cross-section area, culm diameter, linear density and stem flexure resistance which affected anti-lodging efficacy. Although actual lodging was not occurred in field, less stem inclination was observed at paclobutrazol treated plots. 3. There were significant correlation between stem flexure resistance and culm cross-section area, culm diameter and linear density, and negative correlation between straw inclination angle and culm cross-section area and culm diameter. 4. Slight yield reduction was observed when paclobutrazol was applied at 18g ai/10a 20 days before heading. However, when paclobutrazol was applied at 12g ai/10a 10 and 15 days before heading, rice yield was not decreased compared to untreated control.

Agronomic characteristics and grain properties of Korean wheat of 175 farmers in nationwide for two years, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, were evaluated to support basic data for improving grain quality of Korean wheat and enhancing Korean wheat consumption. Agronomic characteristics, including culm length, spike length, number of $spike/m^2$ and rate of off-type plant, and grain properties, including 1000 kernel weight, test weight, moisture, ash and protein content, were influenced by year and location. Number of $spike/m^2$, test weight, moisture, ash and protein content of wheat cultivated in 2011 were higher than those of 2012 and culm length, spike length, rate of off-type plant and 1000 kernel weight of 2012 were higher than those of 2011. Wheat cultivated in southern part of Korea showed higher culm length and 1000 kernel weight and lower test weight than those of northern part of Korea. Spike length, number of $spike/m^2$ and test weight were reduced by additional fertilization after mid of March, although there was no significant difference between date of additional fertilization and grain properties. Cultivated wheats in Jeollabuk-do showed lower ash content and higher protein content than those of other provinces and cultivated wheats in Jeollanam-do exhibited higher ash content than that of other provinces. As amount of fertilization increased, culm length, 1000 kernel weight and protein content increased and spike length and ash content were decreased, although date of additional fertilization did not effect on agronomic characteristics and grain properties. Amount of fertilization was positively correlated with 1000 kernel weight and protein content (r = 0.159, P < 0.05 and r = 0.212, P < 0.01, respectively) and was negatively correlated with ash content (r = -0.185, P < 0.05). Thousand kernel weight was negatively correlated with ash content (r = -0.226, P < 0.01) and positively correlated with protein content (r = 0.207, P < 0.01). Ash content increased as test weight and culm length decreased and 1000 kernel weight was influenced by culm and spike length (r = 0.397, P < 0.001 and r = -0.205, P < 0.01, respectively).
The effects of topping method on the yield and major agronomic traits of two varieties, Sunwol and Youngjun of Alisma plantago, were investigated in the Southern region. Plant height, yield of fresh root, yield of dry root and weights of total roots were the highest in the variety of Sunwol, and at the plots with topping of four times cutting in flowering in main culm (Treatment No.1). Considering from our results, optimum topping method is most likly be topping of four times cutting in flowering in main culm in the Sunwol variety.
Mechanical properties of rice plants were tested to determine compressive force, bending force, tensile force and shear force for improvement of harvesting machines and for efficient utilization of rice culm during the proper harvesting period. Rice varieties used in this study were two Japonica varieties with Irri 348 and Jinju, and two $Indica{\times}Japonica$ hybrids with Seogwang and Taebaeg, which were grown in the standard fertilization field of Chungnam Rural Development Office. Also Jinju and Taebaeg were tested to elucidate the shearing characteristics which included shear force-strain relationship, shear force and shear energy according to the position from the ground level, the shearing angle to the rice culm, and the moisture content. 1. Compressive force, bending force, tensile force and shear force were higher In Japonica varieties than $Indica{\times}Japonica$ hybrids. 2. Shear force to overall culm length decreased progressively to upper positions in Jinju variety but a constant shear force was approximately showed between the ground level and the position of 21cm in Taebaeg variety. 3. Shear force and shear energy increased with increase of the cross sectional area, and the rates of increase were high in general up to the cross sectional area of $10mm^2$ and then they became dull very much. 4. Shear force and shear energy decreased with decrease of moisture content of rice culm after cutting up to the moisture content of 60% (w. b.) and then they did not change significantly.
This experiment was carried out to obtain basic information on the lodging characteristics and yield components of rice plants by new anti-lodging reagent 'KIM-112' (3%, Wp) application at 30 days before heading (DBH) to 5 DBH under two dosage levels (lg 2g, a. i. /10a) at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1989. Culm length was shortened by 10-17% at 1g, a. i. /10a and by 16-23% at 2g of KIM -112 applications. The shortening effect of internode was different by dosages and application times: 2g treatment was greater effect than 19 and early application resulted in shortening of lower internode while this was upper internode at the late application. There were positive correlation between culm length and lodging index, the 1st and the 4th internode lengths had on important effect to lodging index. Thickness of culm wall, culm diameter and weight of basal part of culm were not affected by KIM-112 application. However anti-lodging characters improved by increasing the breaking weight and by decreasing the moment. Lodging index was related to breaking weight, moment and weight of panicle. Heading date by KIM-112 application was delayed one to four days and number of grains per panicle was decreased by shortened panicle length as compared with untreated control, but yield capacity was high a little because of improvement ripening ratio by no lodging.

Experiments were carried out to find the varietal differences in histological structure and outer characteristics, and its relationships between each characters in the internodes of 15 barley varieties (5 covered barley, 5 naked barley and 5 malting barley). The length of 1st-3th internodes from the top was longer in malting barley varieties, covered barley varieties and naked barley varieties in the order, but of 4th-5th internodes was longer in naked barley varieties, covered barley varieties, and malting barley varieties in the order. The diameter of naked barley varieties internodes was much thicker that of malting barley varieties. The thickness of culm wall in 1st-3rd internodes was thicker naked barley varieties, covered barley varieties, and malting barley varieties in sequence and in 4th-5th inter-nodes was covered barley varieties, malting barley varieties, and naked barley varieties in the order. The number of large vascular bundles in covered barley varieties had more than that of naked barley varieties and malting barley varieties in 1st internodes. The size of large vascular bundles in covered barley varieties and naked barley varieties was larger than that of malting barley varieties. The size of large vascular bundles had significant positive correlation with thickness of culm wall and the diameter of internodes. The thickness of culm wall was negatively correlated with the length of internodes and culm, but positively correlated with the diameter of internodes.
To clarify the relationship between ambient water temperature and heading characteristics of rice (Oryza sativa L.), twelve of varieties rice were grown in a cold tolerance screening field where water temperature was controlled by continuous cold water irrigation system to test the cold tolerance of rice. When cold water was continuously irrigated with 5 cm of water depth, the water had stagnated for about three hours, and the water temperature increased gradually from inlet toward outlet in the experimental plot. The fluctuation of water temperature was well synchronized with that of ambient air temperature, and the water temperature near outlet became higher than the air temperature at the vegetative phase, while became lower at the reproductive phase of rice plant community. The leaf development rates on main culm increased by increased water temperature. The rice varities, Fukuhikari, Sangpungbyeo and YR3486-16-2 were more sensitive than the others in the response of leaf development to water temperature. However, Janack and Milyang 42 were comparatively less sensitive to water temperature in leaf development. Janack and Paro -white rices required longer days to develop one leaf on main culm at reproductive phase than at vegetative phase. Varietal difference in days required to develop one leaf on main culm of rice plant was more distinctive at the reproductive phase when water temperature was relatively lower than at the vegetative phase with relatively higher water temperature condition. No difference was found between the growth phases, vegetative and reproductive, in the response of average leaf developmental rates to water temperature under the similar air temperature condition. The estimated average days required to develop one leaf on main culm decreased by 1.3 day by 1$^{\circ}C$ increase in water temperature. Varietal differences in the total number of leaves on main culm depended upon the water temperature, in which the varieties such as Fukuhikari, Gwangmyeon-gbyeo, China 988, and YR3486-16-2 showed increased one leaf by increased water temperature, while Sobaekbyeo, Paro-white, Sangpungbyeo, Pungsanbyeo, Samgangbyeo, and Milyang 42 were kept at the same leaf number regardless of water temperature. However, the total leaf number on main culm and days to heading of Janack increased by increased water temperature. The other varieties showed the shortened days to heading by the increase in water temperature with noticeable varietal differences regardless of the variation in the total number of leaves on main culm.
