Recently, many studies on growth of single crystal diamond using MPECVD have been conducted. The heteroepitaxial method is one of the methods for growing diamonds on a large-area substrate, and research on synthesis of single crystal diamonds using SrTiO3, MgO, and sapphire substrates has been attempted. In addition, research is being conducted to reduce the internal stress generated during diamond growth and to improve the crystallinity of the diamond. The compressive stress generated therein causes peeling and bowing from the substrate. This study aimed to synthesize heteroepitaxial single crystal diamonds with high crystallinity by surface modification. A diamond thin film was first grown on a sapphire/Ir substrate by MPECVD, and then etched with H2 gas to modified the morphology and roughness of the surface. A secondary diamond layer was grown on the surface, and the internal stress, crystallinity of the diamond were investigated. As a result, the fabrication of single crystal diamonds with improved crystallinity was confirmed.
Mold Analysis is crucial factors in the design of injection molding process. Since the qualify of products depends on filing, shrinkage and etc, the procedure of prediction through analysis in the design of injection molding process is needed. In many cases, this kind of analysis makes it possible to predict pressure pattern which determines the condition of injection molding process. Crystallinity is the factor that determines the shrinkage of products. The studies showed the factors that had been related to the degree of crystallinity, which were mostly Weight Reduction, mold temperature and melt temperature. Therefore, the objective of this study is to see the differences of the degree of crystallinity depending on the positions of foamed plastics. The procedure of this study is as the following. First, Simulate the pressure gradient in mold cavity that can produces specimen by using Moldflow. Secondly, produce specimen and measure the degree or crystallinity of each part of specimen by using XRD. Lastly, identify the sensitivity of conventional plastic and foamed plastic on pressure gradient by comparing the simulation and the results of measurement.
The adsorption behaviors of two major cellulase components, endo I and exo II, from Trichoderma viride were investigated using $\alpha$-celluloses with different correlation crystallinity index(Cc) as substrates. The adsorption of cellulase enzyme components was significantly affected by the reaction condition and the physicochemical properties of the cellulose. The $\alpha$-cellulose was hydrolyzed in the presence of cellulase for various periods. The correlation crystallinity index of $\alpha$-cellulose increased with increasing the hydrolysis time. The adsorption was apparently found to obey the first-order kinetics, and the adsorption activation energy(Ea) was calculated from the adsorption rate constant(ka). The value of adsorption rate constant for endo I was larger than that of exo II. This means that endo I are adsorbed more rapidly than exo II. With the increase in correlation crystallinity index, the values of the adsorption rate constants for endo I and exo II decreased, respectively. The activation energy for the adsorption of exo II on the cellulose also was larger than that of endo I. Also adsorption activation energy of endo I and exo II increased with an increase in the crystallinity of sample cellulose.
Inherent crystalline domains present in low formaldehyde to urea (F/U) molar ratio urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins are responsible for their poor adhesion in wood-based composite panels. To modify the crystallinity of low molar ratio (LMR) UF resins, this study investigates the additional effect of cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs), such as cellulose microfibrils (CMFs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and TEMPO-oxidized CNFs (TEMPO-CNFs) on the crystallinity of modified LMR UF resins. First, two modification methods (post-mixing and in situ) were compared for modified LMR UF resins with TEMPO-CNFs. The modified UF resins with TEMPO-CNFs decreased the nonvolatile solid contents, while increasing the viscosity and gel time. However, the in situ modification of UF resins with TEMPO-CNFs showed lower crystallinity than that of post-mixing. Then, the in situ method was compared for all CNMs to modify LMR UF resins. The modified UF resins with CMFs using the in situ method increased nonvolatile solid contents and viscosity but decreased the gel time. The crystallinity of UF resins modified with TEMPO-CNFs was the lowest even though the crystalline domains were not significantly changed for all modified UF resins. These results suggest that these CNMs should be modified to prevent the formation of crystalline domains in LMR UF resins.
This study investigates the crystallinity distribution of ancient silk. Owing to the inherent multi-hierarchical structure of silk protein and the complicated structural changes that occur due to various burial environments, it is challenging but worthwhile to study ancient silk ageing behavior, which is based on the fact that ageing begins with a single fiber and then spreads to a whole fabric. Crystallinity was one of the most effective indicators found to reveal the ageing status of silk. Therefore, a synchrotron radiation-based X-ray diffraction(SR-XRD) method was employed to study the crystallinity distribution of single fibers of ancient silk unearthed from seven archaeological sites in China from historical periods including the warring states, Han dynasty, Song dynasty, and Ming dynasty. In comparison, the conventional X-ray diffraction method, which uses large amounts of samples, was also performed to determine the integral crystallinity of ancient silk. Thermal stability experiments by thermogravimetry(TG) as well as morphology observations by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and optical microscopy(OM) all confirmed the deterioration of ancient silk. Moreover, the ageing mechanism of ancient silk was proposed with the assistance of an artificial ageing study. The results confirmed the effectiveness of SR-XRD as an ageing indicator, revealing the crystallinity distribution. This research could provide motivation to determine the deterioration status of ancient silk, and would also aid in explaining the fragility of ancient silk due to ageing.
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders with different crystallinities were synthesized at various calcination temperatures through the co-precipitation of $Ca(OH)_2$ and $H_3PO_4$. The degradation behavior of these HAp powders with different crystallinities was assessed in a simulated body fluid solution (SBF) for 8 weeks. Below $800^{\circ}C$, the powders were nonstochiometric HAp, and the single HAp phase was successfully synthesized at $800^{\circ}C$. The degree of crystallinity of the HAp powders increased with an increasing calcination temperature and varied in a range from 39.6% to 92.5%. In the low crystallinity HAp powders, the Ca and P ion concentrations of the SBF solution increased with an increasing soaking time, which indicated that the low crystallinity HAp degraded in the SBF solution. The mass of the HAp powders linearly decreased with respect to the soaking time, and the mass loss was higher at lower crystallinities. The mass loss ranged from 0.8% to 13.2% after 8 weeks. The crystallinity of the HAp powders increased with an increasing soaking time up to 4 weeks and then decreased because of HAp degradation. The pH of the SBF solution did not change much throughout the course of these experiments. These results suggested that the crystallinity of HAp can be used to control the degradation.
This study was carried out to evaluate the biodegradability of viscose rayon and lyocell fibers, employing soil burial test, activated sludge test and enzymatic hydrolysis. Using X-ray analysis, crystallinity and morphology change was investigated. External changes after degradation were also observed by SEM and digital photographs. Vscose rayon fibers exhibited higher biodegadation than lyocell fibers, indicating that lower crystallinity favored the biodegradation. Among the biodegradability of lyocell fibers there was a tendency that fibers with lower crystallinity and higher moisture regain had higher values. When external changes after degradation being observed, it was shown that there were microorganisms growing on the surfaces of samples accompanying lading and weakening. From these results it was concluded that biodegradability of the specimens was most closely correlated to the moisture regain and crystallinity of fibers which reflects hydrophilicity and internal structure.

In this study, silk sericin films were prepared using different extraction methods, and the molecular conformation of sericin was examined using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection geometry. Additionally, the effect of the film side (air-facing side or plate-facing side) on the molecular conformation of the sericin films was investigated. Interestingly, the molecular conformation of the sericin film depended on the film side. The molecular conformation of air-facing side of the sericin film was significantly influenced by extraction solution and time. The ${\beta}$-sheet crystallization and the crystallinity index of the sericin film markedly increased with an increase in the extraction time in hot water. The order of the crystallinity indices for the sericin films obtained with different extraction solutions was as follows: citric acid solution > urea solution >> hot water. In contrast, no remarkable differences were observed in the molecular conformation of the plate-facing side of the sericin film after extraction in hot water for different time periods. Urea and citric acid solution extractions showed remarkably higher crystallinity indices for sericin than those obtained after hot water extraction. However, no significant differences were observed in the crystallinity index of sericin between urea and citric acid solution extraction in plate-facing side of the film.
