Homogeneous Aligned a Single Gap Transflective Liquid Crystal Display Driven by Vertical Electric Field (수직전기장을 이용한 수평배향 단일갭 반투과형 액정 디스플레이)

  • We have designed a novel single cell gap transflective display associated with dual orientation of the liquid crystal. Owing to hybrid alignment in reflective part, the effective cell retardation value becomes half of cell retardation value in transmissive part where the LCs are homogeneously aligned. This study shows the possibility to manufacture the transflective display with a single gamma curve for reflective and transmissive region. The new device shows a high image quality with relatively easy fabrication.

Control of High Pretilt Angle for Nematic Liquid Crystal of Negative Dielectric Anisotropy on Blending Polymer Surfaces (복합 폴리머 표면에서의 부의 유전율을 가진 네마틱액정의 고프리틸트각 제어)

  • The control of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed blending polyimide (PI) of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment surface was studied. High LC pretilt angle on the rubbing blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-7492 surface was measured and the LC pretilt angle increased wish blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the low LC pretilt angle on the rubbed blending polyimide of homeotropic PI and SE-150 surface was measured. The high pretilt angle of NLC can be achieved by using the blending PI surface.

  • We report a one-step fabrication of single-crystal organic nanowire arrays on substrates using a new direct printing method (liquid-bridge-mediated nanotransfer moulding, LB-nTM), which can simultaneously enable the synthesis, alignment and patterning of the nanowires using molecular ink solutions. Two- or three-dimensional complex structures of various single-crystal organic nanowires were directly fabricated over a large area with a successive process. The position of the nanowires can be aligned easily on complex structures because the mold is movable on substrates before drying the polar liquid layer, which acts as an adhesive lubricant. This efficient manufacturing method can produce a wide range of optoelectronic devices and integrated circuits with single-crystal organic nanowires.

  • We propose a method to achieve both wide viewing angle (WVA) and narrow viewing angle (NVA) characteristics with a single liquid crystal (LC) panel and a single backlight system by using 3-terminal electrode structure. We could control the viewing angle of a single LC cell by using the horizontal or vertical alignment of LC for the dark state at the front.

High NLC pretilt angle generated on the blending polyimide (homeotropic polyimide and SE-7492 surface was measured and the NLC pretilt angle increases with blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the NLC pretilt angle generated on the blending polyimide (homeotropic polyimide and SE-150 surface was not varied. The high pretilt angle the NLC using blending polyimide surface can be achieved.

Effects of the Ag Layer Embedded in NIZO Layers as Transparent Conducting Electrodes for Liquid Crystal Displays

  • In the present work, a Ni-doped indium zinc oxide (NIZO) film and its multilayers with Ag layers were investigated as transparent conducting electrodes for liquid crystal display (LCD) applications, as a substitute for indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. By interposing the Ag layer between the NIZO layers, the loss of the optical transmittance occurred; however, the Ag layer brought enhancement of electrical sheet resistance to the NIZO/Ag/NIZO multilayer electrode. The twisted nematic cell based on the NIZO/Ag/NIZO multilayer electrode exhibited superior electro-optical characteristics than those based on single NIZO electrode and was competitive compared to those based on the conventional ITO electrode. An LCD-based NIZO/Ag/NIZO multilayer electrode may allow new approaches to conventional ITO electrodes in display technology.

  • 본 논문에서는 최근 LCD소자에 있어서 큰 이슈로 등장한 표면 액정배향기술 및 광시야각 기술에 관하여 설명하였다. 표면 액정배향기술에 있어서는 종래의 러빙법에 대신하여 편광된 자외선을 조사하여 액정분자를 배열시키는 광배향제어법이 큰 기대를 모으고 있으며, 이 기술은 프리틸트 각 발생제어기술과 신뢰성이 과제로 남아있다. 광시야각 기술에 있어서는 최근까지 여러 방식이 제안되어왔으며 그 중에서도 현재로는 광학보상법, IPS방식 등이 실용화가 진행되고 있다. 그러나 향후 다른 방식의 기술발전 여부에 따라 상황이 변화될 것으로 예상된다. 각각의 방식에 따라 서로 장단점을 지니고 있어 향후 이용분야에 따라 용도를 나누어서 응용될 것으로 기대되어진다. LCD소자는 이러한 기술개발의 결과로 평판디스플레이 소자 중에서 더욱 확고한 위치를 확보할 것이며 더 많은 시장성을 점유할 것으로 전망된다. 이상으로 본 논문에서는 LCD소자의 표면액정 배향기술 및 광시야각 기술에 관하여 해설하였으며 표면액정 배향기술에 관하여는 간단히 소개하였으나 이 내용에 관하여는 다음 기회에 상세히 소개하기로 한다.

Liquid Crystal Aligning Capabilities Using the in-situ Photo-alignment Method on Photo-crosslinkable Polymer Surface (광중합 가능한 폴리머 표면에 in-situ 광배향법을 이용한 액정배향특성)

  • Aligning capabilities for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using a in-situ photodimerization method on various Photo-crosslinkable Polyimide (Pl) based polymer and blending photopolymer surfaces were investigated. High pretilt angle of the NLC can be measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on a photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surface containing biphenyl (BP), decyl (de), and cholesteryl (chol) group, respectively. However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the blending photopolymer (Pl and cinnamate materials) surfaces. Consequently, the pretilt angle of the NLC generated on the photo-crosslinkable polyimide based polymer surfaces using the in-situ photodimerization method was higher than that of the blending photopolymers.

Transmittance Improvement with Reversed Fishbone-Shape Electrode in Vertical Alignment Liquid Crystal Display

  • A polymer-stabilized vertical alignment (PS-VA) mode with fishbone-shaped pixel electrode structure is mainly used in large-sized liquid crystal displays (LCDs) owing to its advantages such as wide viewing angle, good transmittance and fast response time. One drawback of this mode is a main bone electrode, which crosses in the center of a pixel. It causes the transmittance to decrease badly because LCs cannot be reoriented in this region, and thus, it is particularly unfavorable in an ultra-high-definition LCD. Here, we propose an innovative structure with the main bone electrode relocated to the edge area in a pixel, and investigate how this reverse directed fishbone-shaped pixel electrode structure affects electro-optic characteristics. The proposed structure shows enhanced electro-optic performance, such as the higher transmittance and the faster response time than the conventional VA mode with fishbone-shaped pixel electrode structure.

Texture Development of CeO2 Buffer Layer and its Effect on Superconducting MOD-YBCO Films (CeO2 완충층의 결정성장 특성 및 금속 유기물 증착법으로 제조된 초전도 YBCO층에 미치는 영향)

  • $CeO_2$ buffer layers have been deposited on YSZ single crystal substrates via a radio-frequency sputtering method. We focused on the texture development of $CeO_2$ with out-of-plane alignment and its effects on a superconducting YBCO layer, which was deposited by metal organic deposition. $CeO_2$ layers were grown epitaxially on single crystal YSZ substrates and subsequent YBCO layers were also grown epitaxially from $CeO_2$ layers. It was observed that the intensity of $CeO_2$(200) decreased with deposition temperature. ${\theta}-2{\theta}$ scan FWHM values of $CeO_2$(200) were inversely proportional to the peak intensities of $CeO_2$(200). The sample with the lowest $CeO_2$(200) intensity and poor out-of-plane alignment showed a strong reaction with the MOD-YBCO layer resulting in a thicker $BaCeO_3$ layer. The texture and superconducting property of the YBCO layer were affected indirectly by the formation of a $BaCeO_3$ layer at the interface between the $CeO_2$ and YBCO layers.
