Parallel pattern fabrication on metal oxide film using transferring process for liquid crystal alignment (전사 공정을 이용한 산화막 정렬 패턴 제작과 액정 배향 특성 연구)

  • We demonstrate an alternative alignment process using transferring process on solution driven HfZnO film. Parallel pattern is firstly fabricated on a silicon wafer by laser interference lithography. Prepared HfZnO solution fabricated by sol-gel process is spin-coated on a glass substrate. The silicon wafer with parallel pattern is placed on the HfZnO film and annealed at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. After transferring process, parallel grooves on the HfZnO film is obtained which is confirmed by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Uniform liquid crystal alignment is achieved which is attributed to an anisotropic characteristic of HfZnO film by parallel grooves. The liquid crystal cell exhibited a pretilt angle of $0.25^{\circ}$ which showed a homogeneous alignment property.

  • This paper introduces the characteristics of SnO2 inorganic film deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering as an alternative alignment layer for liquid crystal display (LCD) applications. The pretilt angle of the SnO2 layer was shown to be a function of the ion beam(IB) incident angle, a planer alignment of nematic liquid crystal was achieved. The about $1.8^{\circ}$ of stable pretilt angle was achieved at the range from 1500 ~ 2500eV of incident energy. To characterize the film shows atomic force microscopy (AFM) on the IB irradiated SnO2 surfaceand the X-ray phtoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the liquid crystal(LC) alignment on the IB irradiated $SnO_2$ surface was due to the reformation of Sn-O bonds. Also, Figure 1 shows that The alignment capability of the IB irradiated SnO2 layers is maintained until annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Comparable electro-optical characteristics to rubbed polyimide were also achieved.

  • [ $TiO_2/PVP$ ] nanofibers were electrospun by varying the collector grounding design to improve the axial alignment of fibers. The collectors are composed of two pieces of conductive substrates separated by a gap f3r the uniaxial alignment of fibers (X design). The collectors consisting of two sets of substrates placed by $90^{\circ}$ (XY design) equipped with a timer are also prepared for biaxial alignment of fibers. Both collectors show that the charged nanofibers are stretched to span across the gap between the electrodes. Experimental results reveal that the latter collector is more effective on the directionality of electrospun $TiO_2/PVP$ nanofibers due to the dissipation of accumulated electric charge between the collectors.

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a SiO thin film. The homogenous alignment can be obtain어 using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SIO thin film, when positive type NLC ($Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected However, the homeotropic alignment can be obtained using ion beam (IB) exposure on the SiO thin film, when negative type NLC ($\Delta\varepsilon$>0) was injected The LC aligning ability on the SiO thin film depends on the dielectric anisotropy type of LC. It will be discussed.

  • We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized rayon a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer. We also discussed the electro-optical characteristic of twisted nematic (TN) LCD using ion beam irradiation on organic overcoat layer.

Liquid Crystal Alignment on Multi-stacked Layer HfO2 Thin Films Using a Solution-process (용액 공정 기반의 다중 적층된 HfO2 박막 상에서의 액정 배향)

  • Effect of multi-stacked layer (MSL), 0.1 mol (M) and 0.3 mol (M) hafnium oxide ($HfO_2$) alignment layers were fabricated via a solution-process for LCs orientation. The solutions were spin-coated and annealed in a furnace. MSL consists of three sub-layers using 0.1 M solution, mono-layer (ML) is composed of 0.3 M $HfO_2$ solution. Then ion-beam irradiation was treated with 1.8 keV for 2 min. $HfO_2$-based LC cells were investigated through photographs, pre-tilt angle using crystal rotation method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement, and surface roughness using atomic force microscopy(AFM) for their characteristic research. Good LC orientation characteristics were observed on MSL $HfO_2$ surface. The LC alignment mechanism on MSL $HfO_2$ and ML $HfO_2$ surfaces was attributed to van der Waals (VDW) interaction between the LC molecular and substrate surface.

Electro-Optical Characteristics of the UV Aligned LCD Cell (UV 배향된 액정셀에서의 전기광학 특성)

  • In this study, we investigated the electro-optical(EO) characteristic of fringe-field switching(FFS) mode cell by the two kinds of ultraviolet(UV) alignment method on the organic thin film(polyimide: PI). The suitable organic layersfor FFS cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) using the in-situ photoalignment method were studied Disclination is observed after conventional photoalignment method for 1h, and in-situ photoalignment method for 1h. Monodomain alignment of the NLC can be observed via in-situ photoalignment method for 2h and 3h. It is considered that NLC alignment is due to photo-depolymerization of the polymer with oblique non-polarized UV irradiation on PI surface. An unstable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with conventional photoalignment method can be achieved. However, a stable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photoalignment method(1h), and V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method was much stable comparing with that of other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's. As a result, more stable EO performanceof UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method for 3h is obtained than that of the other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's.

Liquid Crystal Aligning Capabilities for Nematic Liquid Crystal on the ZrOx Thin Film Layer with E-beam Evaporation

  • In this study, liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for homeotropic alignment on the $ZrO_x$ thin film by electron beam evaporation method were investigated. Also, the control of pretilt angles and thermal stabilities of the NLC treated on $ZrO_x$ thin film were investigated. The uniform LC alignment on the $ZrO_x$ thin film surfaces and good thermal stabilities with electron beam evaporation can be achieved. It is considerated that the LC alignment on the $ZrO_x$ thin film by electron beam evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the $ZrO_x$ thin film surface created by evaporation. In addition, it can be achieved the good electro-optical (EO) properties of the VA-LCD on $ZrO_x$ thin film layer with. oblique electron beam evaporation.

  • In this study, we investigated liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) that non contact alignment technique on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide under various ion beam angles. In this experiment, polyimide layer was coated on glass by spin-coating and Voltage-transmittance(VT) and response time characteristics of the TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system. The good characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposured polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN cell on polyimide surface.

For LC alignment, the surface of a-C:H thin films is treated with low energy ion beam. We investigated the relationship between the properties of a-C:H thin films and LC alignment phenomena.
