  • This paper proposed the design technology for the level meter of the overflow preventer system of LNG storage tank. The parts of LNG ship should be developed under considering the cryogenic environment. Therefore, we proposed the structure of level meter to prevent overflow of LNG tank using the numerical analysis method. The proposed level meter for the overflow preventer is manufactured and the performance is verified through international authorized inspection agency.

  • Cryogenic LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) which is stored in the cylindrical storage tanks of $100,000m^{3}$ has very complex flow phenomena and the changes of thermal properties with exterior conditions and operation mdoes. These complex thermofluid behaviors are affected by the storage, exterior conditions of LNG, design specifications and heat transfer characteristics of tanks, Also, those have influence on the stable storage and supply of LNG in the storage tanks. Thus this study performed the analysis on the 2-D heat transfer of the tank with exterior conditions, on the Cool Down Process in order to cool down the LNG Storage Tank at the initial normal state, and on the Filling Process considered for incoming and rising of LNG. The analysis on the Mixing LNG Storage was studied too. At last, the visualized program on the complex thermofluidodynamic analysis was developed on the basis of the above analyses. The development of this program becomes to be used to the basic design of the commercial tanks as well as to assure technical skill of the analysis on the thermal stability of the stored LNG in the LNG Storage Tank.

  • This paper presents the numerical study on the strength safety of the prestressed concrete outer tank for a LNG storage tank, which is manufactured by sets of membrane panels with special corrugations. This study for a finite element analysis assumes that the membrane panel of the inner tank was fractured and the liquefied natural gas stored in the inner membrane tank was leaked to the prestressed concrete outer tank. The stress and displacement of the outer tank have been analyzed for five different loadings, which are originated by a hydrostatic pressure and a weight of a LNG, a temperature difference, a weight of the prestressed concrete and a boil-off gas pressure. The computed FEM results indicate that the PC outer tank with a storage capacity of 200,000$m^3$ has a good strength safety for a leaked LNG from the membrane inner tank, but the increased cryogenic loadings in which are originated by a leaked LNG decreases the strength safety of the PC structure. This may lead to the collapse of the outer storage tank.

  • Propellant pressurization system in liquid rocket propulsion system plays a role supplying pressurant gas at a controlled pressure into the ullage space of propellant tanks. The most important design parameter for such propellant pressurization system is the temperature of pressurant gas fed from pressurant tank. Such pressurant is gaseous state, of which density is very sensitive to the temperature of pressurant. Generally for the propulsion system, which requires high thrust and is consisted of cryogenic propellant the pressurant is stored at high density and high pressure to reduce the weight of pressurant tanks, which are placed inside of cryogenic propellant tank. That is called cryogenic storage pressurization system. This study investigates the temperature variation of pressurant at the time when the pressurant is coming out of pressurant tank experimentally as well as numerically. Fluids used in this study are air and liquid oxygen as outer fluid and gaseous nitrogen and gaseous helium as pressurant respectively.

  • Cryogenic systems are requirement for the operation of HTS power cables. In general, HTS power cables require temperature below 77K, a temperature that can be achieved from the liquid nitrogen at latm or sub-cooled LN2 above latm. HTS power cable needs sufficient refrigeration to overcome its low temperature heat loading. This loading typically cones in two forms : (1) heat leaks from the surroundings and (2) internal heat generation. This paper explains the cooling test system of 10m HTS power cable. This system is composed of storage dewar, auto fill system, core cryostat and cold-box. Storage dewar is a LN2 storage tank and auto fill system is a LN2 supply device to the sub-cooler, Core cryostat is a LN2 flow line. Cold box is a control unit of temperature and flow rate. It is composed of control valve, flow meter, sub-cooler and circulation pump, etc..

  • This paper reports an analysis of self-pressurization in a closed cryogenic liquid storage system and its comparison with experimental data using liquid nitrogen. Partial equilibrium model(PEM), revised thermodynamic analysis of homogeneous model, has been applied for the pressurization in a closed tank. The vapor and liquid bulk temperature and the liquid-vapor interface temperature are separately calculated as their own representative values in this analysis. The analysis results of the partial equilibrium model are compared with the experimental data and other preceding homogeneous temperature models for validation.

  • Storage tanks of Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) carriers utilized for the purpose of carbon capture and storage (CCS) into subsea strata have to undergo a pre-cooling session before beginning to load cryogenic liquid cargos in order to prevent physical and thermal deterioration of tanks which may result from cryogenic $CO_2$ contacting tank walls directly. In this study we propose dynamic model to calculate the tank inflow of $CO_2$ gas injected for precooling process and its dynamic simulation results under proportional-integral control algorithm. We selected two cases in which each of them had one controlled variable (CV) as either the tank pressure or the tank temperature and discussed the results of that decision-making on the pre-cooling process. As a result we demonstrated that the controlling instability arising from nonlinearity and singularity of the mathematical model could be avoided by choosing tank pressure as CV instead of tank temperature.

  • Restrictions on the emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter from marine engines are being tightened. Each of these emissions requires different reduction technologies, which are costly and require many pieces of equipment to meet the requirements. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel has a great advantage in reducing harmful emissions emitted from ships. Therefore, the marine engine application of LNG fuel is significantly increasing in new ship buildings. Accordingly, this study analyzed the internal support structure, insulation type, and fuel supply piping system of a 35 m3 International Maritime Organization C type pressurized storage tank of an LNG-fueled ship. Analysis of the heat transfer characteristics revealed that A304L stainless steel has a lower heat flux than A553 nickel steel, but the effect is not significant. The heat flux of pearlite insulation is much lower than that of vacuum insulation. Moreover, the analysis results of the constraint method of the support ring showed no significant difference. A553 steel containing 9% nickel has a higher strength and lower coefficient of thermal expansion than A304L, making it a suitable material for cryogenic containers.
