  • The Stirling refrigerators have been widely used for the cooling of the infrared detector and HTS to the cryogenic temperature. The Stirling refrigerator with the rotary compressor are applicable to the cooling device for the compact mobile thermal imaging system, because the refrigerators have the compact structure and light weight. The typical performance factors of the Stirling refrigerator are the cool-down time, cooling capacity at the desired temperature and the input power. And the above performance factors are depends on the thermal insulation characteristics of the Dewar. In this study, the steady thermal load of the Dewar and the performance of the Stirling refrigerator were measured. The results show the dependency of the input power and the charging pressure on the performance of the refrigerator.

  • The 600kJ class high temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS SMES) system is being developed by Korean Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI). The system is operated in cryogenic temperature and high vacuum condition. The SMS magnet was cooled by conduction cooling method using a Gifford-McMahon cycle cryocooler. Thus, electric insulation design at cryogenic temperature and high vacuum is a key and an important element that should be established to accomplish compact design is a big advantage of HTS SMES. This paper describes the electric insulation design, fabrication and experimental results for a mini model of conduction cooled HTS SMES.

  • The inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCLJ limits the fault current with its dc reactor. To fabricate the optimal dc reactor for inductive SFCL, several design and manufacturing technologies are necessary. In this paper, the manufacturing technology for dc reactor and cryogenic cooling method are described in detail. GM-cryocooler was used enlarge the critical current of dc reactor by cooling down the temperature of dc reactor about 20 K. Moreover, the results of short circuit test were described. Finally, the thermal characteristics of conduction-cooled system were discussed and then, sub-cooled nitrogen system was proposed to enhance the thermal stability of dc reactor.

  • There have been many types of development and commercialization efforts for superconducting power applications with the continuous development of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) conductors. In particular, HTS power cables are going to be commercialized in real power grids. A cryogenic refrigeration system should be used to keep it below 77 K, and its required cooling capacity continuously increases as the unit length of the HTS power cable increases. Among the many kinds of cryogenic refrigerator, a reverse Brayton refrigerator that uses turbo expanders is a promising refrigerator due to its efficiency and reliability. Among the various components in refrigerators, the cryogenic turbo-expander is the most important part for increasing efficiency and assuring reliability. The design of a 300 W class turbo-expander is described in this paper prior to the development of a 10 kW class turbo expander, which is the required capability for the commercialization of a HTS power cable. The impeller shape and rotation speed are determined based on the cycle analysis. The Eigen frequency and harmonic analysis are conducted with gas bearings at cryogenic temperatures to determine the operational stability.

  • The injection molding process is widely used in the production of most plastic products. In order to make metal-colored plastic products like those found in modern luxury home alliances, metallic pigments are mixed with a basic resin material for injection molding. However, process control for metal-colored plastic products is extremely difficult due to the non-uniform melt flow of the metallic resin pigments. In this study, the effect of process parameters on the quality of a metal-colored plastic product is evaluated. A rapid mold cooling method using a compressed cryogenic fluid is also proposed to decrease the content of undesired compounds within the plastic product.

  • In this investigation, the 6.6kV/200A Inductive Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) was designed and fabricated. The type of DC reactor for Inductive SFCL was determined as solenoid type during the period of $1${st}$ year research. The 5 bobbins for DC reactor were fabricated and each bobbin was wound with 4 stacked High-Tc superconducting (HTS) tapes and the 5 bobbins were connected in series. The critical current and inductance of DC reactor were simulated by Finite Element method (FEM) and compared with the measured results. The characteristics of DC reactor were enhanced in sub-cooled nitrogen system rather than in liquid nitrogen system. The procedures to accomplish the sub-cooled nitrogen system and the experimental results were introduced in detail. Moreover, the design of sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system for next year research was introduced in brief.

  • The high temperature superconducting (HTS) contra-rotating propulsion (CRP) systems comprise two coaxial propellers sited on behind the other and rotate in opposite directions. They have the hydrodynamic advantage of recovering the slipstream rotational energy which would otherwise be lost to a conventional single-screw system. However, the cooling systems used for HTS CRP system need a high cooling power enough to maintain a low temperature of 2G HTS material operating at liquid neon (LNe) temperature (24.5 - 27 K). In this paper, a single thermo-syphon cooling approach using a Gifford-McMahon (G-M) cryo-cooler is presented. First, an optimal thermal design of a 1.5 MW HTS motor was conducted varying to different types of commercial 2G HTS tapes. Then, a mono-cryogenic cooling system for an integration of two 1.5 MW HTS motors will be designed and analyzed. Finally, the 3D finite element analysis (FEA) simulation of thermal characteristics was also performed.
