The Study on the Preparation of Fluorescence Willemite Powders by Hydrothermal, Wet and Solid State Reaction (형광성 Willemite의 수열, 습식 및 고상 합성에 관한 연구)

  • Willemite powders which have been prepared by solid state reaction were easy to intermixed impurities, and particle surfaces were demaged in the progress of crushing. The above defacts were easy to accompany non-crystallization for mechanochemical effects and luminescence efficiency was deteriorated. The goal of this study improve each of defacts, and synthesize high purity and fine Mn doped willemite powders by wet and hydrothermal methods without crushing progress. It has been experimentally verified that the single phase Zn1.98Mn0.02SiO4 willemite powders which prepared by hydrothermal synthes is at 220$^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours in 2N KOH solution. The products are like needle and composition is the same with starting composition.

  • The important dynamic specifications in the aluminum automobile body design are the vibrations and crashworthiness in the views of ride comforts and safety. Thus, considerable effort has been invested into improving the performance of mechanical structures comprised of the interactive multiple sub-structures. Most mechanical structures are complex and are essentially multi-criteria optimization problems with objective functions retained as constraints. Each weight factor can be defined according to the effects and priorities among objective functions, and a feasible Pareto-optimal solution exists for the criteria-defined constraints. In this paper, a multi-criteria design based on the Pareto-optimal sensitivity is applied to the vibration qualities and crushing characteristics of front structure in the automobile body design. The vibration qualities include the idle, wheel unbalance and road shake. The crushing characteristic of front structure is the axial maximum peak load.

Effects of Various Fabrication Routes on Thermoelectric Properties of n-type Bi2Te2.85Se0.15 Alloys (제조공정에 따른 n형 Bi2Te2.85Se0.15합금의 열전성능 평가)

  • In this study, we have fabricated n-type $Bi_2Te_{2.85}Se_{0.15}$ compounds by different processing routes such as crushing, milling and mixing respectively. Subsequently, the obtained powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The phase crystallinity of bulk samples were identified using X-ray diffraction technique. Powder morphology and fracture surface of bulk samples were observed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity values were significantly increased for the milling sample than crushing and mixing samples. As a result, the maximum power factor was obtained $2.4mW/mK^2$, which is thrice than that of crushing process. The maximum figure of merit (ZT) of 0.77 was achieved at 400 K for the milling sample. Furthermore, relatively high hardness and density values were noticed for the different processed samples.

Effects of Reinforced Fibers on Energy Absorption Characteristics under Quasi-static Compressive Loading of Composite Circular Tubes (강화섬유에 따른 준정적 하중하에서 복합소재 원형튜브의 에너지 흡수특성 평가 연구)

  • In this study, the energy absorption capabilities and failure modes of four different kinds of circular tubes made of carbon, Kevlar and carbon-Kevlar hybrid composites with epoxy resin have been evaluated. In order to achieve these goals, these tubes were fabricated with unidirectional prepregs and compressive tests were conducted for the tubes under 10mm/min loading speed. From the test results, carbon/epoxy tubes were collapsed by brittle fracturing mode and showed the best energy absorption capabilities, while Kevlar/epoxy tubes were crushed by local buckling mode and worst. The hybrid [$90_C/0_K$] tubes were failed in a local bucking mode and showed good post crushing integrity, whereas [$90_K/0_C$] tubes were failed in a lamina bending mode and bad post crushing integrity.

  • A design-oriented method for analysis of the structural damage due to ship collisions is developed by using the idealized structural unit method(ISUM). The method takes into account yielding, crushing, rupture, the coupling effects between local and global failure of the structure, the influence of strain-rate sensitivity and the gap/contact conditions. The method is verified by a comparison of experimetal and numerical results obtained from test models of double-skin plated structures in collision/grounding situations with the present solutions. As an illustrative example, the method has been used for analyses of a side collision of a double-hull tanker. Several factors affecting ship collision response. namely the collision speed and the scantlings/arrangements of strength members, are discussed.

  • The reinforced concrete slab is one of main structure members in the construction industry sector. However, most of researches regarding to RC slabs have been focused on two-dimensional Mindlin-type plate element on the basis of laminated plate theory since three-dimensional solid element has a lot of difficulties in finite element formulation and costs in CPU time. In reality, the RC slabs are subjected to dynamic loads like a heavy traffic vehicle load, and thus should insure the safety from the static load as well as dynamic load. Once we can estimate the dynamic behaviour of RC slabs exactly, it will be very helpful for design of it. In this study, the 20-node solid element has been used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of RC slabs with clamped edges. The elasto-visco plastic model for material non-linearity and the smeared crack model have been adopted in the finite element formulation. The applicability of the proposed finite element has been tested for dynamic behaviour of RC slabs with respect to characteristics of concrete materials in terms of cracking stress, crushing strain, fracture energy and Poisson's ratio. The effect on dynamic behaviour is dependent on not crushing strain but cracking stress, fracture energy and Poisson's ratio. In addition to this, it is shown the damping phenomenon of RC slabs has been identified from the numerical results by using Rayleigh damping.

Seismic response and failure modes for a water storage structure - A case study

  • The present paper deals with the seismic response analysis and the evaluation of most likely failure modes for a water storage structure. For the stress analysis, a 3-D mathematical model has been adopted to represent the structure appropriately. The structure has been analyzed for both static and seismic loads. Seismic analysis has been carried out considering the hydrodynamic effects of the contained water. Based on the stress analyses results, the most likely failure modes viz. tensile cracking and compressive crushing of concrete for the various structural elements; caused by the seismic event have been investigated. Further an attempt has also been made to quantify the initial leakage rate and average emptying time for the structure during seismic event after evaluating the various crack parameters viz. crack-width and crack-spacing at the locations of interest. The results are presented with reference to peak ground acceleration (PGA) of the seismic event. It has been observed that, an increase in PGA would result in significant increase in stresses and crack width in the various structural members. Significant increase in initial leakage rate and decrease in average emptying time for the structure has also been observed with the increase in PGA.

Effect of Air Ejection on the Behaviors of Sows and their Piglets Related to the Crushing of Piglets by Sows (공기분사가 모돈과 포유자돈의 압사 관련 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Suckling piglets must avoid positions with high air velocity because they don’t have hypodermic fat. Therefore this study examined the effects of air ejection on the behaviors of sows and their piglets. Compressed air was released for 5s at 5s intervals between floor and udder of sows only when they were standing or sitting. Sixteen multiparous crossbred(Landrace×Yorkshire) sows and their piglets were used. Behaviors of sixteen sows and their piglets were recorded for 4 days postpartum, using the LED lamp(wavelength:950nm), CCD camera(Samsung SDC-411), multiplexer(Samsung SDM-080), and time lapsed VCR(Samsung SRV-30). The videotapes were scanned every 30s to obtain an instantaneous behavioral sample. The sow’s standing and sitting rates between control group(CG) and air ejection group(AEG) were not significantly different(P>0.05). This means that air ejection does not affect the behavior of sows. Frequency of the suckling piglets’ behaviors closely related to the crushing by sows was lower in AEG than in CG(P<0.05). These results suggest that air ejection may be available for reduction of the crushing of suckling piglets by sows.

A smeared crack model for seismic failure analysis of concrete gravity dams considering fracture energy effects

  • In the present paper, a coaxial rotating smeared crack model is proposed for mass concrete in three-dimensional space. The model is capable of applying both the constant and variable shear transfer coefficients in the cracking process. The model considers an advanced yield function for concrete failure under both static and dynamic loadings and calculates cracking or crushing of concrete taking into account the fracture energy effects. The model was utilized on Koyna Dam using finite element technique. Dam-water and dam-foundation interactions were considered in dynamic analysis. The behavior of dam was studied for different shear transfer coefficients considering/neglecting fracture energy effects. The results were extracted at crest displacement and crack profile within the dam body. The results show the importance of both shear transfer coefficient and the fracture energy in seismic analysis of concrete dams under high hydrostatic pressure.

Seismic-performance Flexural Experiments for Real Scale Piers with Circular Cross-section Considering Aging Effects (노후도를 고려한 실크기 원형단면 교각의 내진성능 휨실험)

  • For old piers constructed when seismic design code had not been developed, lap splices usually exist in plastic hinge region. Corrosion of rebars causes decreasement in cross-sectional area of rebar and deterioration of lap-splice behaviour, thereby reducing the seismic performance of the old piers. In this research, according to these characteristics of old piers, test specimens are designed and manufactured considering rebar corrosion, lap splice, seismic design details, and seismic reinforcement. These effects are investigated through experiments. As a result of these experiment, rebar corrosion as well as lap splice reduces displacement ductility. When seismic design details or steel-plate reinforcement are applied, sufficient displacement ductility is expressed. For non-seismically designed specimens, loosening of the lap splice of transverse rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete in plastic hinge region . For seismically designed specimen, area-reducing and untying of transverse rebars due to corrosion of rebars caused buckling of longitudinal rebars and crushing of core concrete.
