The purpose of this study was to investigate the crosslinking density and reinforcement of rubber compounds with various carbon black loadings, cure systems and cure temperatures. Bound rubber content increased with volume fraction of carbon black in rubber compounds, but total crosslinking density decreased with increasing the bound rubber content. Rate constant of cure reaction was changed significantly by cure system and cure temperature, especially it showed strong dependence on the cure temperature. High activation energys of cure reaction were shown in the rubber compound with high loading of carbon black under EC system and in the rubber compound with low loading of carbon black under CC system. High total crosslinking density of vulcanized compounds appeared in the rubber compound with low loading of carbon black and CC system among cure systems. Typical change of total crosslinking density by EC system was not shown. The highest elastic constant by Mooney-Rivlin equation was shown in the rubber compound with low loading of carbon black and SEC system. Modulus increased as increasing the loading of carbon black in the rubber compounds and showed the order of SEC, CC, and EC system for cure system.

Pharmaceutical use accounts for a great part of articles and papers on crosslinking of polymers. Crosslinking of polymers used for tissue engineering and drug delivery respects non-cytotoxicity and in situ gelling. The crosslinking of polymers is aimed not only at the improvement of modulus, chemical resistance, and thermal resistance, but also at endowing them with such functions as metal adsorption, antifouling, and ion exchange via crosslinked segments. Smart polymers responding to environmental change, and cosslinking mediated by light, enzyme, natural compound and in aqueous medium in consideration of environment are being studied. Developing new polymeric materials is essential along with the pharmaceutics aiming at the longevity of 120 years old. Functionalization and property adjustment of polymers through crosslinking will be done more delicately. Hydrogels will be focused on injectable and in situ gel forming. In the coating industry crosslinking system with low non-toxicity and low energy consumption will be developed in consideration of workers and environment.
In this work, calcium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate as metal ionic crosslinking agents were used to introduce ionic crosslinking points to the ethylene vinylacetate (EVA) emulsions for the enhancement of water resistance and mechanical properties of emulsion films. The properties of EVA emulsion film were investigated in crosslinking density, thermal features, surface energy, and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength. With the increasing content of metal ionic crosslinking agent, the crosslinking density of the EVA emulsion film increases, resulting into the improvement of water resistance. The surface energy and mechanical properties of the EVA emulsion film, however, showed somewhat different behaviors. The highest surface energy, tensile strength, and tear strength were observed when 0.4% for calcium hydroxide and 0.5% for magnesium carbonate was added respectively, because the EVA emulsion containing carboxylic acid forms strong carboxylate-metal bond of ionically-crosslinked system. Therefore, it can be concluded that metal ionic crosslinking agents, such as magnesium carbonate and calcium hydroxide are considered to improve water resistance and mechanical properties of the EVA emulsion.

The photoisomerization of the crosslinked and uncrosslinked polymer-pair with azo linkages was studied by the photoinduced birefringence. The amount of photoinduced birefringence of crosslinked polymer system was much smaller than that of uncrosslinked polymer system, even when varying pumping laser power, so the photoisomerization of an azo chromophores could be controlled by crosslinking process. The adhesion behaviors and processability of NBR as a sealing material were investigated. In order to find the optimum formulation, the adhesive properties and processability were observed as the change of the contents of acrylonitrile (ACN) in NBR. Effects of Mooney viscosity, filler, plasticizer and crosslinking agent on the adhesion behaviors were also studied. The contents of ACN in NBR have great effects on adhesion behaviors and processability in NBR sealing. To know the optimum condition of roll mixing, degree of dispersion was investigated. It was confirmed that degree of dispersion was influenced by various factors such as mixing order, time, and temperature. The crosslinking system was studied as the observation of sulfur system, peroxide system, crosslinking density, and structure. From the variation of the dry condition and hexamine contents, the relation between adhesive and NBR was studied. These results show the adhesion properties and processability are dependent on the contents of ACN and crosslinking system.
Various crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridines) (CHP4VP) having different degrees of crosslinking were synthesized by radical copolymerization of 4-vinylpyridine with if N,N' -1, 6-hexamethylenebisacrylamide, and CHP4VP- Cu(II) complexes were prepared by the method of adsorption equilibrium. The catalytic activity of the complexes for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) was investigated. The oxidation of AA by these complexes showed a kinetic behavior of the Michaelis-Menten type. The catalytic activity of CHP4VP-Cu(I ) catalytic system was increased with increasing the degree of crosslinking of CHP4VP, and its activity was scarcely decreased even after repeated use. However, the tendency of the catalytic activity of CHP4VP-Cu(II) complexes was decreased for the oxidation of AA when compared with that of the previously reported catalytic system containing crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine) prepared using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. These results indicate that the degree of crosslinking of CHP4VP and the hydrophobicity of the crosslinker play an important role in the catalytic system of the oxidation of AA.
Up to the present, fabric finishing methods have been mainly employed for the application of chitosan. However, the coated chitosan acid salt is prone to be detached from the fabric during the laundering process. In order to improve the wash fastness, chitosan treated fabrics are being subjected to thermal curing. In this study, chemical crosslinking reaction by epichlorohydrin was introduced to improve the problem of the thermal curing. An improvement of the wash fastness is expected since the coated chitosan component on the fabric become insoluble by the introduction of the crosslinking. The demerit of the single chitosan treatment (inferior handle due to the excessive stiffness, etc.) was supplemented by the application of chitosan-polyurethane mixture solution. The mixture ratios were adjusted to 1 : 0, 1 : 0.25, 1 : 0.5, 1 : 1, and 1 : 2 for the chitosan/PU mixture. Physical and mechanical properties of the finished fabric specimens were measured using the Kawabata Evaluation System(KES), and hand values were calculated accordingly based on the translational formulas.

In this study, the effect of the cure, mechanical properties, and oil resistance of NBR (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber)/peroxide compounds were investigated for various co-agents. NBR compounds were characterized using a swelling test, a rheometer (MDR), and a compression set test. Mechanical properties were tested with original compounds, heated in air and exposed to the ASTM No.1, IRM 903 oil. NBR compounds were prepared using peroxide as the crosslinking agent. Trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC), and 1,2-polybutadiene (HVPBD) were used as co-agents. The NBR compounds containing TMPTMA and HVPBD lowered the scorch time, while the addition of TAIC did not significantly change the scorch time. NBR compounds containing TMPTMA increased the crosslinking density, while the addition of TAIC and HVPBD lowered the crosslinking density. Moreover, the addition of TMPTMA improved the oil resistance of the NBR compound.
Polyurethanes(PUs) were synthesized by reaction of isophorone diisocyanate, acetylbutyl citrate, and 3 types of polycaprolactone diol. Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR and NMR spectrometer. And, their thermal and mechanical properties were measured by TGA ud UTM. The effective network chain lengths ($\bar{M}_c$), measured by compressive modulus apparatus, were about $8000\~24000$ g/mol. As crosslinking density and amount of hard segment increased, tensile strength increased and elongation decreased. As the crosslinking density of PUs increased, thermal property inproved. When the ratio of NCO/OH is 1.1, maximum crosslinking density was achieved.
A series of crosslinkable, waterborne polyurethanes (I-WBPUs) were prepared by in-situ polymerization using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)/poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol (PTMG, $M_n$=2,000)/dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA)/ethylene diamine (EDA)/triethylamine (TEA)/aminoplast[hexakis(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM)] as a crosslinking agent. Typical crosslinkable, waterborne polyurethanes (B-WBPUs) blended from WBPU dispersion and aqueous HMMM solution was also prepared to compare with the I-WBPUs. The crosslinking reaction between WBPU and HMMM was verified using FTIR and XPS analysis. The effect of the HMMM contents on the dynamic mechanical thermal, thermal, mechanical, and adhesion properties of the I-WBPU and B-WBPU films were investigated. The storage modulus(E'), glass transition temperatures of the soft segment ($T_{gs}$) and the amorphous regions of higher order ($T_{gh}$), melting temperature ($T_m$), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), residual weight, $T_{10%}$ and $T_{50%}$ (the temperature where 10 and 50% weight loss occurred), tensile strength, initial modulus, hardness, and adhesive strength of both I-WBPU and B-WBPU systems increased with increasing HMMM content. However, these properties of the I-WBPU system were higher than those of the B-WBPU system at the same HMMM content. These results confirmed the in-situ polymerization used in this study to be a more effective method to improve the properties of the WBPU materials compared to the simple blending process.
