In the present work, structural joints have been modeled as a pair of translational and rotational springs and frequency equation of the overall system has been developed using sub-structure synthesis. It is shown that using first few natural frequencies of the system, one can obtain a set of over-determined system of equations involving the unknown stiffness parameters. Method of multi-linear regression is then applied to obtain the best estimate of the unknown stiffness parameters. The estimation procedure has been developed first for a two parameter joint model and then for a three parameter model, in which cross coupling terms are also included. Two cases of structural connections have been considered, first with a cantilever beam with support flexibility and then a pair of beams connected through lap joint. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerical simulation and by experimentation.

The development of a finite element model for the geometric and material nonlinear analysis of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams is presented. The nonlinear geometric effect is introduced by the coupling of axial and flexural fields. A layered approach is applied so as to consider different material properties across the depth of a cross section. The proposed method of analysis is formulated based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. According to the total Lagrangian description, the constructed stiffness matrix consists of three components, namely, the material stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear material effect, the geometric stiffness matrix reflecting the nonlinear geometric effect and the large displacement stiffness matrix reflecting the large displacement effect. The analysis is capable of predicting the nonlinear behaviour of bonded prestressed concrete continuous beams over the entire loading stage up to failure. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed model.

The magnetisation behaviour of polycrystalline permalloy/copper multilayers with mixed antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic coupling was investigated as function of temperature. The results are discussed in a framework of a realistic model of anitferromagnetically coupled layers connected by ferromagnetic pinholes. A microstructure of pinholes (their density and dimensions) was varied either by a proper annealing treatment or by choosing samples with various Cu spacer thicknesses. It was demonstrated that the temperature changes of the net magnetic moment measured in a magnetic field smaller than the saturation field was strongly affected by the composition of the pinholes, their density, cross-sectional area and their lengths.

The base shear force and the overturning moment are important factors for the earthquake design of a structure. These should be predicted exactly especially when the nonlinear seismic isolation bearings are used against earthquake motions. Generally these are derived by the acceleration responses of a structure with the he assumed masses. However these can be contaminated by the noise in the measured responses and the uncertainty of assumed masses. This paper presents the results of the derived base shear force and overturning moment compared with the measured results by multi-axis load cells. Also discussions are made on the cross-coupling effects of the multi-axis load cell.
Structural dynamics usually applies modal transformation rules aimed at de-coupling and/or minimizing the equations of motion. Proper orthogonal decomposition provides mathematical and conceptual tools to define suitable transformed spaces where a multi-variate and/or multi-dimensional random process is represented as a linear combination of one-variate and one-dimensional uncorrelated processes. Double modal transformation is the joint application of modal analysis and proper orthogonal decomposition applied to the loading process. By adopting this method the structural response is expressed as a double series expansion in which structural and loading mode contributions are superimposed. The simultaneous use of the structural modal truncation, the loading modal truncation and the cross-modal orthogonality property leads to efficient solutions that take into account only a few structural and loading modes. In addition the physical mechanisms of the dynamic response are clarified and interpreted.

In this paper, a new technique for attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) using low-cost MEMS sensors of the gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer is addressed particularly in vibration environments. The motion of MEMS sensors interact with the scale factor and cross-coupling errors to produce random errors by the harsh environment. A new adaptive attitude estimation algorithm based on the Kalman filter is developed to overcome these undesirable side effects by analyzing windowed measurement error covariance. The key idea is that performance degradation of accelerometers, for example, due to linear vibrations can be reduced by the proposed measurement error covariance analysis. The computed error covariance is utilized to the measurement covariance of Kalman filters adaptively. Finally, the proposed approach is verified by using numerical simulations and experiments in an acceleration phase and/or vibrating environments.

Bicyclolactones obtained from the Diels-Alder cycloaddition of 3,5-dibromo-2-pyrone can undergo various palladium catalyzed cross coupling reactions to afford aryl bicyclolactones. The resulting coupled products can be readily converted into various 3-OH cyclohexenes via lactone ring openings, while those bearing dienyl units underwent highly diastereoselective Diels-Alder cycloadditions with selected dienophiles to funish multiply functionalized polycarbocycles. Bromo-bicyclic diene furnished two different diastereomers endo-form (62%) and exo-form (38%) upon cycloadditions with N-Et maleimide (NEM), and their stereochemistries were identified with NMR.

Graphene and graphene oxide (GO) have been modified with palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) to develop high performance catalysts for the Sonogashira cross coupling reaction. To understand catalytic performance of Pd NPs on graphene (Pd/G) and Pd NPs on GO (Pd/GO), we monitored their morphological and electronic structural changes before/after Sonogashira reaction using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and XAFS. Here, we demonstrate that both Pd/G and Pd/GO show high catalytic efficiency toward the Sonogashira reaction, but only Pd/GO revealed excellent recyclability. The remarkable catalytic efficiency of both catalysts is attributed to the high degree of the Pd NP dispersions on supports and thus smaller Pd NPs can provide highly reactive low coordinated Pd atoms. However, we attributed the excellent recyclability of Pd/GO to the presence of oxygen functionalities on GO, which can provide nucleation sites for the detached Pd atoms during the Sonogashira reaction and prevent agglomeration of the Pd NPs since the oxygen functional groups are very reactive to mobile Pd adatoms.

Recently, optical disk drives are increasingly demanded to have higher speed as well as high information density, especially for applications like CD-ROM drives. To this end, improvement of their optical pick-up structure and control is recognized the very challenging issue. In this paper, the 2-D motion of the pick-up is first analytically modelled to identify the cause and effect of the troublesome cross coupling between auto-focusing and tracking directions. Subsequently, the overall system equations are derived to include the dynamics of the related components in the auto-focusing servo system. While its unmeasurable parameters being estimated by the least square error method, a simple but decent linear model can be obtained within its operating frequency range. To design the high speed and robust positional servo controller, the design specifications are detailed and H$\sub$.inf./ control method is employed based on the simple model. Using the pickup in a commercial 8 fold speed CD-ROM drive as an example, performance of the designed controller is verified by realtime experiments.

Research using multiple shake tables present new and unique challenges in controls. Typical single shake table tests with large specimens must cope with significant specimen force feedback that can increase tracking error due to specimen gain, damping, and non-linearity. Multiple shaking tables with distributed specimens can produce cross-coupling forces due to inertial and response effects and forces due to static differential displacements. Although many various control architectures exist, basic simplified techniques can yield excellent results without risk to control stability. Off-line simulation techniques can also prove invaluable for studying system response before the real system is operated.
