  • The wind responses of twin buildings are determined by the characteristics of wind loads and the dynamic characteristics of the structural systems of the buildings. In this study, the characteristics of wind pressure that influence wind responses were identified for two different spacings between the twin buildings using a wind tunnel test and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. Structural dynamic characteristics were also identified using 3D structural system modeling. The double modal transformation method was utilized to evaluate the characteristics of wind pressure for across-wind and along-wind conditions and the effect of the dynamic characteristics of each structure on the wind responses. The channeling and vortex effects were identified through the POD method. Across-wind loads were significantly affected by the spacings between the twin buildings, whereas along-wind loads were minimally affected. Similarly, while using the double modal transformation method, a significant difference was noticed in case of the cross-participation coefficients in the across-wind direction condition for the different spacings between the buildings; however, the along-wind direction condition showed negligible difference. Therefore, the spacing between the two buildings plays a more important role in across-wind responses compared to along-wind responses.

  • Cross-geometrical Cr/Co/Al-Ox/Co/Ni-Fe tunnel junctions were fabricated by magnetron sputtering. To form an insulating layer, The Al layer was oxidized in an atmosphere of oxygen-argon mixture at low power after deposition. To enhance the coercivity of the bottom Co layer, The Cr seed layer was deposited on the glass and it led to increase in coercivity. The coercivity increase is due to the increase of roughness through the Cr thickness. In over oxidation time, the oxidation of Co bottom layer and flat interface of insulator can increase the bottom Co coercivity. But TMR ratio gradually decrease. TMR ratio is relevant with Cr thickness, insulator thickness, and oxidation time. The maximum TMR ratio was 14% at room temperature and the TMR ratio was decreased to half at 0.51 V.

  • In this study, conditional simulation was conducted to estimate rock mass rating(RMR) in unsurveyed regions. Sequential Gaussian simulation(SGS) and sequential indicator simulation(SIS) were applied for estimating RMR from the bore hole logging data. The uncertainty of SGS and SIS was verified by sample cross validation. A subset composed of 5 bore hole logging data among the original 30 bore hole logging data was set aside as test data. The remainder was training data. The quality of SGS and SIS estimation on the testing data reflects how well it would perform in an unsupervised setting. SGS and SIS were useful stochastic methods to estimate the spatial distribution of rock mass classes correctly and assess the uncertainty of estimation quantitatively. The result of conditional simulation can offer useful information of rock mass classes such as RMR in unsurveyed regions.

  • A water tube with detonating cord was devised to control the blast dust. Water diffusion experiments with different detonating cord positions were conducted during the series of experiments to optimize the design parameters of the tube. Images from high speed camera were analyzed to evaluate the results. AUTODYN program was adopted to simulate the diffusion process of water and compared with the images. Diffusion of water shows cross flow in case of external charge while the internal case shows radial flow. A bubble ring was formed during the numerical analysis of internal charge case as occurred in underwater blast. An additional bubble ring was formed by the reflection pressure from the ground. And the Weber number was determined as sufficient for spray atomization performance of the water tube.

  • As part of the development of the 3-D geologic modeling software, this study addresses on new development of software modules that can perform the analysis and visualization of the fracture network system in 3-D. The developed software modules, such as BOUNDARY, DISK3D, FNTWK3D, CSECT and BDM, are coded on Microsoft Visual Studio platform using the MFC and OpenGL library supported by C++ program language. Each module plays a role in construction of analysis domain, visualization of fracture geometry in 3-D, calculation of equivalent pipes, production of cross-section map and management of borehole data, respectively. The developed software modules for analysis and visualization of the 3-D fracture network system can be used to tackle the geomechanical problems related to strength, deformability and hydraulic behaviors of the fractured rock masses. All these benefits will further enhance the economic competitiveness of the domestic software industry.

  • Axial fan is used for the supplement of large amount of flows. Axial blowers show relatively high efficiency of the system. The present model of axial fan is for cooling a condenser in an air-conditioning unit that exhibits tendency toward compact size. In order to realize the compact model, the width of an axial blade should be cut down in axial distance. Main interest lies on the performance of the axial blowing system with blades having shorter chord length. One of the important design parameters for axial fan is the shape of the blades of it. Design of blades includes the cross-sectional shape and its dimension, including the chord length. We consider two types of blades; one is NACA airfoil with normal chord length and the other is with shortening chord length by $10\%$ of normal airfoil. Axial blower with the modified blades is essential for the compact model of an air-conditioner. The other design parameters are same in the two cases. Using a wind tunnel follows ASHRAE standards carries out evaluation of performance of the system. Detail of flows around the blades is prepared by velocity measurements using PIV. According to performance estimation, the axial blower with short chord blade show quite close to the performance results, including flow rate and pressure rise, of the standard one. The reason of the two similar results is that the flowpatterns depend on Reynolds number based on the chord length of a blade. In this investigation, the critical chord length is found, in which the flows near the airfoil are so unstable and the performance of the system is decreased. A series of figures is for the detail information on the flow.

  • A design procedure is established for hypersonic nozzles by using MOC(Method of Characteristics) and CFD. The inviscid nozzle contour is designed by MOC, then BLC(Boundary Layer Correction) is made by evaluating the boundary layer thickness from viscous CFD analysis. By comparing various definitions of the boundary layer thicknesses, it seems that the boundary layer thickness of 95% speed of the maximum value at the cross section satisfies best the design Mach number. Design procedure is as follow; MOC design, grid generation, inviscid analysis, viscous analysis, BLC and viscous analysis for confirmation and post-processing. All procedures are made automatically by using the batch processing.

  • We prepared tunnel magnetoresistance(TMR) devices of Ta($50\AA$)/NiFe($50\AA$)/IrMn(150$\AA$)/CoFe($50\AA$)/Al ($13\AA$)-O/CoFe($40\AA$)/NiFe($400\AA$)/Ta(50$\AA$) structure which has 100$\times$100 $\mu\textrm{m}^2$ junction area on $2.5\Times2.5 cm^{2}$ $Si/SiO_2$ ($1000\AA$) substrates by a inductively coupled plasma(ICP) magnetron sputter. We fabricated the insulating layer using a ICP plasma oxidation method by varying oxidation time from 80 sec to 360 sec, and measured resistances and magnetoresistance(MR) ratios of TMR devices. We used a high resolution transmission electron microscope(HRTEM) to investigate microstructural evolution of insulating layer. The average resistance of devices increased from 16.38 $\Omega$ to 1018 $\Omega$ while MR ratio decreased from 30.31 %(25.18 %) to 15.01 %(14.97 %) as oxidation time increased from 80 sec to 360 sec. The values in brackets are calculated values considering geometry effect. By comparing cross-sectional TEM images of 220 sec and 360 sec-oxidation time, we found that insulating layer of 360 sec-oxidized was 30 % and 40% greater than that of 150 sec-oxidized in thickness and thickness variation, respectively. Therefore, we assumed that increase of thickness variation with oxidation time is major reason of MR decrease. The resistance of 80 sec-oxidized specimen was 160 k$\Omega$$\mu\textrm{m}^2$ which is appropriate for industrial needs of magnetic random access memory(MRAM) application.

  • At present, local limestone mines with large opening employ auxiliary fans for workplace ventilation which have been used in coal mines with much smaller airways. Considering the low static pressure loss in the large-opening mines, high pressure auxiliary fans face serious economical limitations mainly due to their excessive capacity. The optimal fan selected for the ventilation in large-opening working places should supply air quantity enough for maintaining safe environment and keep its operating cost as low as possible. This study focuses on the development of a low pressure auxiliary fan designed to have smaller range of the static head but to have more potential for higher ventilation and energy efficiency. The flow characteristics of high and low pressure auxiliary fans were theoretical as well as experimentally investigated to assess the ventilation efficiency in term of environmental and economical aspects. Moreover, the low pressure fan was tested in two limestone mine sites with small and large cross-sectional areas for evaluating its ventilation efficiency. Results from this study can be applied to improve the economy and efficiency of auxiliary fan for ensuring better air quality and work environment management.

  • A stress-induced brittle failure in deep tunneling generates spalling and slabbing, eventually causing a v-shaped notch formation. An empirical relationship for the depth of the notch to the maximum tangential stress assuming an equivalent circular cross-section was proposed (Martin et al. 1999). While this empirical approach has been well recognized in the industry and used as a design guideline in many projects, its applicability to a non-circular opening is worth revisiting due to the use of equivalent circular profile. Moreover, even though the extent of the notch also contributes to notch failure, it has not been estimated to date. When the estimate of both the depth and the extent of notch are combined, a practical and economically justifiable support design can be achieved. In this study, a new methodology to assess the depth as well as the extent of notch failure is developed. Field data and numerical simulations using the Cohesion Weakening Frictional Strengthening (CWFS) model were collected and correlated with the three most commonly accepted failure criteria (σ13, Dismaxc, σdevcm). For the numerical analyses, the D-shaped tunnel was used since most civil tunnels are built to this profile. Inferential statistical analysis is applied to predict the failure range with a 95% confidence level. Considering its accuracy and simplicity, the new correlation can be used as an enhanced version of failure assessment.
