This study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching or studying programs, and thus to overcome the selectionbias in studies. Selection-bias derived from unobservable characteristics in the course of participants selection of the teaching or studying programs, in the case of cross-section data instrumental variable(IV) method and two stage least square estimation were suggested as an analysis tool. Panel data were analyzed by using both fixed effect in which individual effects are captured by intercept terms and random effect estimation where an unobserved effect can be characterized as being randomly drawn from a given distribution.
Proper material constitutive models for concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns of circular cross section and subjected to pure bending moment are proposed. These material models are implemented into the Abaqus finite element program and verified against experimental data. It has been shown that the steel tube does not provide good confining effect to the concrete core when the CFT columns is subjected to pure bending moment. When the diameter-to-thickness ratio of the CFT columns is small, the behavior of the CFT column is the same as the steel tube without a concrete core.

An integrated multi-disciplinary design system plays a critical role in the preliminary design of an aircraft. In this paper such system is developed for the multi-disciplinary computation and design; aerodynamics elasticity, and radio frequency stealth. Common data base of geometry and structured grids is generated and used for aerodynamic, structural and eletromagnetics analysis. The Navier-Stokes CFD, FEM, and CEM technique are used for aerodynamic, structural, and RF stealth computations respectively.

This study measured and analyzed male firefighters hand sizes as well as suggested data for developing firefighting gloves with a good fit. Accordingly, body dimensions related to the hand were measured for 100 male firefighters. Twenty-three measuring items related to the hand and lower arm were selected. The firefighters' measurement data were compared to general adult male measurements from the 6th Korean Anthropometric data to analyze the hand sizes characteristics of firefighters. As a result, height, hand circumference, hand breadth, wrist circumference, elbow-wrist length, forearm-fingertip length and firefighter weight were significantly larger than adult males. A correlation analysis for 23 items was conducted to select items used as standards for setting a size when manufacturing firefighting gloves. Hand length and circumference were selected as representative hand parts for making firefighting gloves. Cross analysis between hand length and circumference were conducted to find the section showing the highest distribution ratio. As a result, the highest sections were between 19cm and 21cm for hand circumference and between 18.5cm and 19.5cm for hand length, which may be suggested as the most important ranges.
A method is proposed of estimating Muskingum-Cunge parameters for natural streams using cross-sectional and longitudinal channel geometry and roughness coefficient data. Firstly, for various water-surface levels at a cross section cross-sectional areas and hydraulic radii are calculated. Corresponding discharges are then calculated using Manning's equation. This procedure is repeated for all cross-sections in the reach. Finally, routing parameters are estimated from the calculated cross-sectional area and discharge value pairs by regression analysis. The procedures for estimating Muskingum-Cunge parameters are applied to the South Han River. Flows calculated by Muskingum-Cunge model with estimated parameters showed much better agreement with those by dynamic wave model in peak discharge, time to peak discharge, and normalized RMS errors than those calculated by the HEC-1 Muskingum-Cunge model.

An integrated multidisciplinary analysis and design system plays a critical role in the preliminary design of an aircraft. In this work a system based on the CATIA is developed for multidisciplinary computational design; aerodynamics, elasticity, and radar frequency stealth. Common data base of geometry and rectangular grids is generated and used for aerodynamic and structural analysis, while derivative triangular grids are generated for the RCS calculation. The panel method (PANAIR), FEM (NASTRAN), and PO technique are used for aerodynamic, structural, and RF stealth computations, respectively, and several additional algorithms are developed for the effective communication of the common data.
A computer program for stem analysis has been prepared by using BASIC language. Annual-ring counts and other input data can be directly entered for necessary calculation, and outputs are data lists, cross-section areas, age-height relationships, growth rates, total, annual, and mean increments of height, D.B.H. and volume for an individual tree. The sectional log volumes are calculated by Huber's formula, and the growth rates by Pressler's in this program. A copy of the program listing is in appendix I.
BACKGROUND: It is known that impacts of climate change on damage occurrence by insect pests and diseases are increasing. The negative effects of climate change on production will threaten our food security. It is needed that on the basis of analysis of the impacts, proper strategies in response to climate change are developed. METHODS AND RESULTS: The objective of this paper is to estimate impacts of climate change on rice damage occurrence by insect pests and diseases, using the panal model which analyzes both cross-section data and time series data. The result of an analysis on impacts of climate change on rice damage occurrence by pest insect and disease showed that the damage occurrence by Rice leaf roller and Rice water weevil increased if temperature increased, and damage occurrence by Stripe, Sheath blight, and Leaf Blast increased if precipitation(or amount of sunshine) increased(or decreased). CONCLUSION: Adaptation strategies, supplying weather forecasting information by region, developing systematical strategies for prevention of damage occurrence by pest insect and disease, analyzing the factors of damage occurrence by unexpected pest insect and disease, enforcing international cooperation for prevention of damage occurrence are needed to minimize the impacts of damage occurrence on rice production.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) has been constructing a nationwide soil information DB since 2000, as basic data for the construction of 'underground geographical information,' a project under the 2nd National Geo-spatial Information System (NGIS) master plan. The inputted soil information includes not only underground conditions such as the layer depth, type, color, and groundwater level, but also engineering information that can be applied to construction work design, such as on the standard penetration test and the compression test. It is difficult to use this information in soil analysis and design, however, because only the test results are currently available. A web-based geo-spatial information system was developed in this study to facilitate the effective application of the soil information database (DB). First, the space information, layer information, and engineering test information were loaded from the soil information DB in real time, and the earth volume, bearing capacity, and settlement were calculated to develop a web client that will evaluate the ground softness and liquefaction. It seems that the soil information DB can be actively applied to the planning and design of construction works using this system.
This paper presents a thorough investigation into the structural performance of cold-formed steel column bases using double lipped C sections with bolted moment connections. A total of four column base tests with different connection configurations were carried out, and it was found that section failure under combined bending and shear was always critical. Moreover, the proposed column bases were demonstrated to be structurally efficient attaining moment resistances close to those of the connected sections. In order to examine the structural behaviour of the column base connections, a finite element model was established using shell and spring elements to model the sections and the bolted fastenings respectively. Both material and geometrical non-linearities were incorporated, and comparison between the test and the numerical results was presented in details. The design rules originally developed for bolted moment connections between lapped Z sections were adopted and re-formulated for the design of column base connections after careful calibration against the test data. Comparison on co-existing moments and shear forces at the critical cross-sections of the column bases was fully presented. It was shown that the proposed design and analysis method was structurally adequate to predict the failure loads under combined bending and shear for column bases with similar connection configurations.
