  • Multi-pass shape rolling is performed to produce long products of arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. In the past, the multi-pass shape rolling process has been designed by the trial and error method or the experience of experts based on the empirical approach. Particularly, the design of roll caliber in shape rolling is important to improve product quality and dimensional accuracy. In this paper, the caliber design and pass schedule of multi-pass shape rolling were proposed for manufacturing piston ring wire. In order to design roll caliber, major shape parameter and dimension was determined by analysis of various caliber design. FE-simulation was conducted to verify effectiveness of proposed process design. At first, forming simulation was performed to predict shape of the product. Then, fracture of the wire was evaluated by critical damage value using normalized Cockcroft-Latham criteria. The experiment was carried out and the results are within the allowable tolerance.

  • We carried out this study to evaluate the grain refining in and the mechanical properties of alloys that undergo severe plastic deformation (SPD). Conventional rolling (CR) and cross-roll rolling (CRR) as SPD methods were used with Ni-20Cr alloy as the experimental material. The materials were cold rolled to a thickness reduction of 90% and subsequently annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to obtain a fully recrystallized microstructure. For the annealed materials after the cold rolling, electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was carried out to investigate the grain boundary characteristic distributions (GBCDs). The CRR process was more effective when used to develop the grain refinement relative to the CR process; as a result, the grain size was refined from $70{\mu}m$ in the initial material to $4.2{\mu}m$ (CR) and $2.4{\mu}m$ (CRR). These grain refinements have a direct effect on improving the mechanical properties; in this case, the microhardness, yield and tensile strength showed significant increases compared to the initial material. In particular, the CRR-processed material showed more effective values relative to the CR-processed materials. The different texture distributions in the CR (001//ND) and CRR (111//ND) were likely the cause of the increase in the mechanical properties. These findings suggest that CRR can result in materials with a smaller grain size, improved texture development and improved mechanical properties after recrystallization by a subsequent annealing process.

  • It is very important to find out causes of strip pinching for the high quality of products and fer the stable operation of rolling system. We have examined the strip pinching from three points of view to find out the causes of strip pinching in rolling system: strip shape, rolling operation conditions, and behavior of strip. Wedge, off center, and difference of rolling force through CMD(Cross machine direction) are found to possibly provide major initial causes of strip pinching. Generally strip pinching occurred in the tail of strip. Thus, computer simulations by using a FEM code were also carried out to find out the initial mechanism of strip pinching depending upon the force and geometric boundary conditions at the time of strip tail rolling. The strong compression force effect due to the sudden release of strip tail from the work roll and non-uniform strip tail shape (ex. Fish tail) across the CMD were found to provide possible major causes of strip pinching.

  • This paper proposes a new method for predicting the derailment of a running train under cross-wind conditions, using the single wheelset derailment theory. The conventional theories used for predicting the derailment due to cross-winds were developed under the assumption that derailment will always be of the roll-over type, thus neglecting other possible types such as wheel-climbing, which may occur under special driving conditions. In addition, these theories do not consider running conditions such as dynamic wheel-rail interactions and friction effects. The new method considers the effects of dynamic wheel-rail interaction as well as those of lateral acceleration, rail cant, and cross-winds. The results of this method were compared and verified with those of the conventional methods and numerical simulations.

  • The profile ring rolling process can realize various ring shapes unlike conventional rectangular cross-sectional ring products. In this paper, the defective groove in the bottom surface of L-shaped ring products was analyzed. Grooves are generated by non-uniform external forces due to profile main roll and initial blank shape. Process parameters such as the motion of dies and working temperature were determined. Mechanism of groove formation was analyzed by FE simulation on the basis of local external forces acting on the blank. Analysis results were similar to the groove actually occurring in the production line. Based on results of the analysis, two solutions were proposed for the groove. The position of the base plate supporting the blank was adjusted and edge length of the main roll was extended to suppress growth of grooves. It has been verified that groove was improved by applying two proposed methods in the shop-floor.

  • In this study, we investigated the dominant processing variables that would influence the microstructural development of AA6061 deformed by differential speed rolling (DSR) at ambient temperature. For this purpose, we carried out a series of DSR on the samples to investigate the effects of roll speed ratio, sample rotation, and number of operation under specific rotation. Among these, the condition with a height reduction of 75% at a speed ratio of 1:4 through rotation along rolling direction (RR) displayed the pronounced results of more homogenous matrix-structure and superior mechanical properties than the others tested in this study. This was mainly due to the cross shearing of macro-shear pattern in segment where dynamic recrystallization took place with ease throughout the sample. Thus, an average microhardness value of 101 Hv was obtained in the present sample deformed by 4-pass DSR with RR where macro cross-shearing was effectively applied.

  • The ring rolling process is one of the best known ring production method. The present model based control system was designed for rings with rectangle cross-section yet. An Adaptive Fuzzy Control for Closed-Die Ring-Rolling was developed in order to enhance the flexibility of the radial-axial ring rolling machine and to produce the rings with highly complex cross-section profile, roller bearing rings. A fuzzy method was implemented because of its simple application and to utilize the known process knowledge. The quality of the control system was estimated by die filling grad, which is strong dependent on the rising time of the controller. The rolling process parameters were also varied to determine their influence on filling of the ring profile. Die filling met the requirement of the industry.

  • The strip profile and shape control is one of the most important technologies in Hot Rolling Mill System. Because the unbalance of strip´s shape and wave appearance between stands has a bad effect on Hot Rolling Mill System by making the inferior thickness, strip´s damage and so forth in factories. Many competition Plate Mill introduced shape control system, for example, pair cross-mill, work roll bender, which includes shape measuring instruments and shape control mathematical models. Shape meter, which is equipped for flatness, only does feedback control at the top of coil. And, for crown, we depend on initial setup value and there is no feedback control. Therefore we predict the shape of strip using rolling pressure, bender force and tension of inter-stand in ...

  • A three dimensional finite element-based computer simulator is presented for the analysis of the thermomechanical behaviors of rolls and strip during hot strip rolling. The simulator is capable of predicting the strip profiles in a 4 high mill stand, and in particular, can account for the effect of bender forces and pair cross angles. The structure of the simulator as well as various numerical schemes employed are described. The capability of the simulator is demonstrated through applications to some selected set of process conditions.
