  • Velocity and density distributions of a high-speed and initial $CO_{2}$ jet flow have been analyzed simultaneously by a developed three-dimensional digital speckle tomography and a particle image velocimetry(PIV). Three high-speed cameras have been used for tomography and PIV since a shape of a nozzle for the jet flow is asymmetric and the initial flow is fast and unsteady, The speckle movements between no flow and $CO_{2}$ jet flow have been obtained by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The three-dimensional density fields for the high-speed $CO_{2}$ jet flow have been reconstructed from the deflection angles by a real-time tomography method and the two-dimensional velocity fields have been calculated by a PIV method simultaneously and instantaneously.

  • Three dimensional density distributions of impinging and eccentric flames have been investigated by digital speckle tomography. The flames have been ignited by a mixture of butane and air from a circular nozzle and impinged against a plate located at the upper side of the burner exit. For comparison with experimental data, computer synthesized phantoms of impinging and eccentric flames have been reconstructed by a developed three-dimensional multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART). The advanced reconstruction in the stagnation flow region involved the sharp change of the flow direction and pressure gradient has been developed using a cross-correlation method and new scanning technique for the speckle displacement.

  • This study deals with high power Nd:YAG laser welding of thin steels for small pressure vessels. Full penetration welding at the overlap joint was performed so as to assure sufficient weld strength. Results showed that mid-depth weld size reduced drastically with increasing the travel speed. Position of focus had little effect on the bead formation even though short focal system was used. However, the shape factor and the bead width had closely related with the position of focus. Based on the microstructural inspection, acceptable weld was obtained when the overlap clearance was controlled up to 20% of the base metal thickness. In the case that the joint contained more clearance than the critical value, both the tensile shear strength and the tear strength were reduced. Results also demonstrated that shielding gases were proved to play a key role as far as the bead formation characteristics was taken into consideration. Blowing dry air through 5mm in diameter nozzle produced narrower bead cross-section than that of argon or nitrogen shielding.

  • Solid free-form fabrication (SFF) technology was developed to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds for tissue engineering (TE) applications. In this study, we developed a polymer deposition system (PDS) and created 3D microstructures using a bioresorbable polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer. Fabrication of 3D scaffolds by PDS requires a combination of several devices, including a heating system, dispenser, and motion controller. The system can process a polymer with extremely high precision by using a 200 ${\mu}m$ nozzle. Based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, both the line width and the piled line height were fine and uniform. Several 3D micro-structures, including the ANU pattern (a pattern named after Andong National University), $45^{\circ}$ pattern square, frame, cylindrical, triangular, cross-shaped, and hexagon, have been fabricated using the polymer deposition system.

  • Spray characteristics of a fuel injector have an important effect upon engine power and emission. Thus this study was investigated the spray characteristics of the intermittent injection using a gasoline fuel injector. Image processing system and PDA system were utilized for visualization of a spray behavior and measurements of a droplet size and velocity, respectively. Fuel injection duration was fixed with 3ms and injection pressure was varied such as 250kPa, 300kPa, 350kPa. for a high fuel injection pressure, spray tip arrival time was fluctuated at a vigorously disintegrated cross section. Axial velocity was linear correlated with fuel droplet size in the time interval of an injected main spray at spray downstream.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number 2.1 and a Reynolds numberof 70000 to identify the mechanism of Mach wave generation and radiation from the jet. In orderto provide the near-field radiated sound directly and resolve the large-scale vortices highly.high-resolution essentially non-oscillatory(ENO) scheme, which is one of the ComputationalAeroAcoustics(CAA) techniques, is newly employed. Perfectly expanded supersonic jet is selectedas a target to see pure shear layer growth and Mach wave radiation without effect of change injet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. The sound field ishighly directional and dominated by Mach waves generated near the end of potential core. Thenear field sound pressure levels as well as the aerodynamic properties of the jet, such asmean-flow parameters are in fare agreement with experimental data.

  • Electromagnetic seawater thrusters may be classified into four general categories : internal duct dc, external field dc, internal peristaltic ac, and external peristaltic ac. Internal duct dc thrusters offer the advantages of low magnetic field leakage, simple construction, and potentially high reliability. The most efficient internal duct configuration consists of converging inlet nozzle and a straight discharge duct. Ideal efficiency calculations based on the one-dimensional Bernoulli equation show that thrusters should be designed with large cross-sectional areas and operate at low discharge velocities. In practice, this may be accomplished by using multiple thruster ducts. Conductivity enhancement, high magnetic fields, and long electrodes will also improve efficiency.

  • Heat transfer characteristics for an air jet vertically impinging on a flat plate with a set of hybrid rods was investigated numerically using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$turbulent model. A commercial finite-volume code FLUENT is used. The rods had cross sections of half circular and rectangular shapes. The heating surface was heated with a constant heat flux value of $1020W/m^2$. Parameters investigated were the jet Reynolds number, nozzle -to-plate spacing, the rod pitch and rod-to-plate clearance. The local and average Nusselt number were found to be dependent on the rod pitch and the clearance because installing rods disturbed the flow. Higher convective heat transfer rate occurred in the whole plate as well as in the wall jet region.

  • The near field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distribution is investigated experimentally. Experiments were carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements were undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distribution of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend at the upstream of the exit. Three pipes were used for this study: A straight pipe, 90 and 160 degree-bended pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the pipe exit, the secondary flow through the bend and the mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes.

  • In this study, the geometric design parameters of ejector system were investigated. The critical parameters were primary nozzle area ratio, 2nd-throat cross sectional area and 2nd-throat L/D ratio. At every geometry cases, primary pressure and secondary pressure were measured simultaneously according to secondary mass flow rate. From the results, the ejector starting pressure, unstarting pressure and minimum secondary flow pressure were found and we got the effect of geometric parameters to ejector performance and the way to optimal design of ejector system for chemical lasers operating. Also the experiments of changing secondary flow temperature were carried out.
