In this paper, the effect of normal load on the failure mechanism of echelon joint has been studied using PFC2D. In the first step, calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from experimental laboratory tests. Then, six different models consisting various echelon joint were prepared and tested under two low and high normal loads. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models were cross checked with the results of direct shear tests performed on non-persistent jointed physical models. The simulations demonstrated that failure patterns were mostly influenced by normal loading, while the shear strength was linked to failure mechanism. When ligament angle is less than $90^{\circ}$, the stable crack growth length is increased by increasing the normal loading. In this condition, fish eyes failure pattern occur in rock bridge. With higher ligament angles, the rock bridge was broken under high normal loading. Applying higher normal loading increases the number of fracture sets while dilation angle and mean orientations of fracture sets with respect to ligament direction will be decreased.

The effects of aging of PSF/AS4 laminates on fatigue was studied using the new energy release rate analysis. The analysis by the variational mechanics has been useful in providing fracture mechanics interpretation of matrix microcracking in cross-ply laminates. This paper describes the changes of the critical energy release rate (microcracking toughness) according to the aging period under fatigue loading. The master plot by modified Paris-law gives a characterization of a material system's resistance to microcrack formation. PSF $[0/90_{s}]_{s}$ laminates were aged at four different temperature based on the glass transition temperature for 0 to 60 days. At all temperatures, the toughness decreased with aging time. The decrease of the toughness at higher temperature was faster than at lower temperature. To assess the effects of aging on fatigue, the unaged laminates were compared with the laminates which had been aged for 60 days at 170$^{\circ}C$ near 180 $^{\circ}C$ t$_g$. The slope of dD/dN versus ${\Delta}G_m$. of the aged laminates was lower than that of the unaged laminates. There was a significant shift of the aged data to formation of microcracks at the lower values of ${\Delta}G_m$.
The possibilities of non-linear analysis of reinforced-concrete structures are under development. In particular, current research areas include structural analysis with the application of advanced computational and material models. The submitted article aims to evaluate the possibilities of the determination of material properties, involving the tensile strength of concrete, fracture energy and the modulus of elasticity. To evaluate the recommendations for concrete, volume computational models are employed on a comprehensive series of tests. The article particularly deals with the issue of the specific properties of fracture-plastic material models. This information is often unavailable. The determination of material properties is based on the recommendations of Model Code 1990, Model Code 2010 and specialized literature. For numerical modelling, the experiments with the so called "classic" concrete beams executed by Bresler and Scordelis were selected. It is also based on the series of experiments executed by Vecchio. The experiments involve a large number of reinforcement, cross-section and span variants, which subsequently enabled a wider verification and discussion of the usability of the non-linear analysis and constitutive concrete model selected.
In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of reinforced concrete to Investigate the variation of strength and the safety of reinforced concrete structures under fatigue load. The specimens were of the same rectangular cross-section, of effective height 24cm and width 30cm and their span was 330cm. The three point loading system is used in the fatigue tests. In these tests, the fracture mode of reinforced concrete structures under fatigue load, relationship between the repeated loading cycles and the mid-span displacement of the specimens were observed. According to the test results, the following fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete specimens were observed. By increasing of the number of repeated loading cycles, the mid-span displacement became greater, however the Incremental amounts of the displacement were reduced. It could be also known that the inelastic strain energy of the doubly reinforced rectangular beams was larger than that of the singly reinforced rectangular beams as increasing the number of repeated loading cycles. Compliance of reinforced concrete structures tended to be reduced as increasing the repeated loading cycles, and the compliance of the doubly reinforced rectangular beams was generally smaller than that of the singly reinforced rectangular beams. Based on the above investigation, it could be concluded that the doubly reinforced rectangular beams under fatigue load were more efficient to resist the brittle fracture than the singly reinforced rectangular beams.
To predict the deformation and fracture during tube expansion using the finite element (FE) method, a material model is considered that incorporates the damage evolution due to the deformation. In the current study, a Rice-Tracey model was used as the damage model with inclusion of the hydrostatic stress term. Since OFHC Cu is not significantly affected by strain rate, a Hollomon flow stress model was used. The material parameters in each model were obtained by using an optimization method. The objective function was defined as the difference between the experimental measurements and FE simulation results. The parameters were determined by minimizing the objective function. To verify the validity of the FE modeling, cross-verification was conducted through a tube expansion test. The simulation results show reasonable agreement with the experiments. The design for a minimum diameter of expansion tube using the FE modeling was verified by a simplified tube expansion test and simulation results.
The use of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) in automotive applications has steadily increased over the past few years. Two different failure modes are generally observed in shear-tension tests for resistance spot welds of AHSS. interfacial fractures and full button pullout. Despite high load-carrying capacity. the resistance spot welds in AHSS cue prone to interfacial fractures. To improve the load carrying ability of welds during shear-lap and cross tension tests. the tip surface of the electrode was grooved in a round shape. The electrode tip surface was modified so as to concentrate the current now in the central and circumferential portion of the electrode force. The results showed that the interfacial fracture was suppressed in welds using the modified electrode. In a comparison of failure mode during mechanical tests. the welds made with the modified electrode showed a higher tendency to fail via full button pullout fracture.
Statement of problem: Problems such as loosening and fractures of retained screws and fracture of implant fixture have been frequently reported in implant prosthesis. Purpose: Implant has weak mechanical properties against lateral loading compared to vertical occlusal loading, and therefore, stress analysis of implant fixture depending on its material and geometric features is needed. Material and methods: Total 28 of external hexed implants were divided into 7 of 4 groups; Group A (3i, FULL $OSSEOTITE^{(R)}$Implant), Group B (Nobelbiocare, $Br{\aa}nemark$$System^{(R)}$Mk III Groovy RP), Group C (Neobiotec, $SinusQuick^{TM}$ EB), Group D (Osstem, US-II). The type III gold alloy prostheses were fabricated using adequate UCLA gold abutments. Fixture, abutment screw, and abutment were connected and cross-sectioned vertically. Hardness test was conducted using MXT-$\alpha$. For fatigue fracture test, with MTS 810, the specimens were loaded to the extent of 60-600 N until fracture occurred. The fracture pattern of abutment screw and fixture was observed under scanning electron microscope. A comparative study of stress distribution and fracture area of abutment screw and fixture was carried out through finite element analysis Results: 1. In Vicker's hardness test of abutment screw, the highest value was measured in group A and lowest value was measured in group D. 2. In all implant groups, implant fixture fractures occurred mainly at the 3-4th fixture thread valley where tensile stress was concentrated. When the fatigue life was compared, significant difference was found between the group A, B, C and D (P<.05). 3. The fracture patterns of group B and group D showed complex failure type, a fracture behavior including transverse and longitudinal failure patterns in both fixture and abutment screw. In Group A and C, however, the transverse failure of fixture was only observed. 4. The finite element analysis infers that a fatigue crack started at the fixture surface. Conclusion: The maximum tensile stress was found in the implant fixture at the level of cortical bone. The fatigue fracture occurred when the dead space of implant fixture coincides with jig surface where the maximum tensile stress was generated. To increase implant durability, prevention of surrounding bone resorption is important. However, if the bone resorption progresses to the level of dead space, the frequency of implant fracture would increase. Thus, proper management is needed.
The purpose of this study is to evalute the efficacy af the Ilizarov external fixation for the surgical treatment. of the tibial plafond fractures. We reviewed retrospectively fourteen cases of tibial plafond fractures with moderate to severe soft. tissue damage, which were fixed with Ilizarov external fixator. Using the AO Muler classification, there were four Type C1 fractures, six Type C2 and four Type C3. In most, of the cases, the ankles were operated on with other associated fractures within a few days after injury. We reduced the fracture indirectly by soft issue taxis and fixed externally across the ankle joint. using the circular external fixator with tensioned wires and ankle hinge. In cases of inadequate closed reduction, we applied limited open reduction and internal fixation. Range of motion exercise began immediately. Postoperative follow-up averaged fourteen months (ranges, 8-30 months). Overall clinical results rated good or excellent in 7 cases, fair in 4 and poor in 3. There were three cases of pin tract infection which were resolved with short-term antibiotics and local care; one delayed wound closure in a patient. whose fracture was associated with Type III open wound; one wound slough in a patient associated with Type II open wound, which was closed later by skin graft; and one osteoarthritis. From this review, we concluded that cross-ankle circular external fixation with tensioned wires with or without. limited open reduction is a reasonable alternative for the treatment of the tibial plafond fractures with severe soft tissue damage.
Interfacial reaction and mechanical properties between Sn-Bi-X ternary alloys(X : 2Cu. 2Sb 5In) and Cu-substrate were studied. Cu/solder joints were subjected to aging treatments for up to 60days to see interfacial reaction at $100^{\circ}C$ and then were examined changes of microstructure and interfacial compound by optical microscopy, SEM and EDS. Cu/solder joints were aged to 30days and then loaded to failure at cross head speed of 0.3mm $\textrm{min}^{-1}$ to measure strength and elongation. According to the result of EDS, it is supposed that the soldered interfacial zone was composed of $\textrm{Cu}_{3}\textrm{Sn}$ and $\textrm{Cu}_{6}\textrm{Sn}_{5}$. According to the tensile test of Cu/solder joint, joint strength was decreased by aging treatment. Fractographs of Cu/Sn-Bi solder detailed the effect of aging on fracture behavior. When intermetallic was thin, the fracture occurred through the solder. But as the interfacial intermetallic is thickened, the fracture propagated along the intermetallic/solder interface.

In this study, in order to compare the seismic performance of steel structure beam-column connection details and non-scallop connection details mainly used in Korea, a full-scale static cyclic loading test and FEM analysis were conducted through the same modeling as the experiment. For quantitative numerical comparison, the strain concentration ratio and moment transfer efficiency used in previous studies were cited. As the welding area of the beam web decreased, the deformation rate of the beam flange increased, and the plastic deformation capacity according to the rotation angle decreased or brittle fracture occurred. Comparing the analysis results with the experimental results, the possibility of brittle fracture tended to increase when the web welding ratio for the total cross-sectional area of H-shaped fell below 60%.
