  • Association mapping is widely used in rice and other crops to identify genes underlying important agronomic traits. Most association mapping studies use diversity panels comprising accessions with various geographical origins to exploit their wide genetic variation. While locally adapted breeding lines are rarely used in association mapping owing to limited genetic diversity, genes/alleles identified from elite germplasm are practically valuable as they can be directly utilized in breeding programs. In this study, we analyzed genetic diversity of 179 rice varieties (161 japonica and 18 Tongil-type) released in Korea from 1970 to 2006 using 192 microsatellite markers evenly distributed across the genome. The 161 japonica rice varieties were genetically very close to each other with limited diversity as they were developed mainly through elite-by-elite crosses to meet the specific local demands for high quality japonica rice in Korea. Despite the narrow genetic background, abundant phenotypic variation was observed in heading time, culm length, and amylose and protein content in the 161 japonica rice varieties. Using these varieties in association mapping, we identified six, seven, ten, and four loci significantly associated with heading time, culm length, and amylose and protein content, respectively. The sums of allelic effects of these loci showed highly significant positive correlation with the observed phenotypic values for each trait, indicating that the allelic variation at these loci can be useful when designing cross combinations and predicting progeny performance in local breeding programs.

  • A new rose variety, was selected from the progenies of a cross between "Cosai" and "Tokimeky" in 2006 after evaluation trials for three years (2004-2006). "Waltz" was developed because of many petals and powdery mildew resistance. A standard type with large sized flower, "Waltz" shows in 11.0 cm flower diameter. "Waltz" produces 130 stems?m-2 in a year. It has red-white color flower and 49.6 petals per flower. The stem length of cut flower was long with 69.3 cm. Vase life of the variety could be as long as 9.6 days.

  • A golden double freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) "Golden Amor" was developed from a cross 'Golden Crown' and 'White Wing' followed by seedling and line selections at the National Horticultural Research Institute, Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2005. Growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2000 to 2005. "Golden Amor" has large double type flower with bright golden color (RHS 12B). It have multiple florets, good flower shape, upright leaves and stalks. The average yield of "Golden Amor" was 6.0 cuttings per plant in greenhouse carried out from 2003 to 2005. It has good production of cormlets, vigorous growth and resistance to Fusarium and virus. "Golden Amor" would be cultured under greenhouse condition in Korea.

  • A new gerbera variety "Red Line" was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2008. A cross was made between "Mirage" with orange and double and "Rose" with red and semi-double in 2005. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2005 to 2008), it was selected specially for the use of cut flower. "Red Line" is a vigorous cultivar with red (RHS R44B), black center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 12.7 cm, large flower. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 8.10 cm and 2.80 cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that "Red Line" has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivars and increasing farmers-income.

  • A new poinsettia cultivar "Early bird" was bred by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2007. A cross was made between 'Ichiban', a variety with deep lobed transitional leaves and bright red bracts, and 'Freedom Red', a vigorously growing dark red colored variety in 2004. "Early bird" was finally selected in 2007 after the investigation of the growth and flower characteristics from 2005 to 2007. "Early bird" has bright red colored, wide obovate bracts. Leafblade is dark green and ovate. Plant height is short and stem color is greenish. Response to short day is early and its bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored 6.5 weeks after short day commencement.

  • A Hosta cultivar 'Neulpureum 1' was bred at the Korea National Arboretum, which produces new cultivars using vegetative propagation techniques. The new cultivar 'Neulpureum 1' was derived by crossing Hosta minor with Hosta 'Krossa Regal'. Among the induced leaf-color- and shape-modified hosta plants, the plants that exhibited deep-green color and small-bended leaves were selected. 'Neulpureum 1' maintained the deep-green leaves for longer than Hosta 'Krossa Regal'. Additionally, the plant height of 'Neulpureum 1' was shorter than that of Hosta 'Krossa Regal' and several leaves were observed on the new cultivar; therefore, it is likely to be used as a pot plant. The botanical characteristics were investigated for three years beginning 2012. A Hosta 'Neulpureum 1' can prove to be useful as a material for a pot plant or as ground cover plant at half-shadow place.

  • A new gerbera cultivar 'Sunny Lemon' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2009. A cross was made between 'Pavlov' and 'Patrick' with pink and semi-double in 2006. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2006 to 2009), it was selected for the use of cut flower. 'Sunny Lemon' is a vigorous cultivar with yellow flower color (RHS Y9C), brown center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 11.0 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 7.63 cm and 2.59 cm, respectively. Days to first blooming are 84.5, approximately 2 weeks earlier than the standard cultivar. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of cut flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that 'Sunny Lemon' has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivars and increasing farmers' income.

It was developed from a cross between a pedigree of Daeyeop as a female and YCPL1846 as a male parent in 1994. 'Dayu' could be characterized by white flower color and brown grain color. Dayu shows 127 cm in plant height, and has lodging tolerance. Maturing date of 'Dayu' was October 6, which was similar with that of 'Saeyeopsil'. This new cultivar has high oil content with 48.5% and high linolenic acid in the fatty acid composition. The grain yield potential of 'Dayu' is about 1.44 MT/ha in the regional yield trial.

  • Intermediate parent "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" (Malus domestica Borkh.) was released from Fruit Research Division, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Korea in 2008. It was derived from the cross between "Starkrimson" and columnar type "McIntosh Wijcik" in 1992 after selection tests from 2000 to 2008. Trees are moderately vigorous and have spreading branching habit. It bears abundant flower buds on one-year-old branches and fruits mainly on spurs or short branches. Harvesting time of this variety is late September, 7 days later than that of "Hongro" in Suwon. The fruit is conical to narrow conical in shape and bright red in skin color. Fruit size is small with weight of 200~240g on an average and fruits have $14^{\circ}Bx$ soluble solid and medium acidity. It is moderately susceptible to alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria alternata). "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" is a promising apple cultivar and will appeal to young people with good sugar-acid balance.
