In order to achieve the desired lightweight and robust design of a structure, it is preferable to design a structure and its control system, simultaneously, which is termed the combined optimal design. A constant-cross-sectional area cantilever beam was chosen as the optimum design method, An initial load and a time-varying disturbance were applied at the free end of the beam. Sliding mode control was selected, due to its insensitivity to the disturbance, compared with other modes. It is known that the sliding mode control is robust to the disturbance and is uncertain, only if a matching condition is met, after giving a switching hyper plane. In this study, the optimum method was used for the design of the switching hyper plane, and the objective function of the optimum switching hyper plane was assumed to be the objective of the control system. The total weight of the structure was treated as a constraint, and the cross sectional areas of the beam were considered as design variables, the result being a nonlinear programming problem. To solve it, the sequential linear programming method was applied. As a result of the optimum design, the effect of attenuating vibrations has been substantially improved. Moreover, the lightweight design of the structure became possible as a result of the relationship of the weight of the structure to the control objective function.
Local buckling behaviors of aluminum square tube beams reinforced by aluminum plates under three point bending loads have been analyzed using experimental tests combined with theoretical and finite element analyses. For this analysis true stresses were determined from applied loads and cross-sectional area records of a tensile specimen with a rectangular cross-section by real-time photographing. True strains were also obtained from in-situ local elongation measurements of the specimen gage portion by the multi-point scanning laser extensometer. Six kinds of aluminum tube beam specimens reinforced by aluminum plates were employed for the bending test. The bending deformation behaviors up to the maximum load analyzed by the numerical simulation agreed well with experimental ones. After passing the maximum load, reinforcing plate hindering the local buckling of the tube beam was debonded from the aluminum tube beam. An aluminum tube beam strengthened by aluminum plate on the upper web showed the most excellent bending capacity, which could be explained on the basis of the neutral axis shift and the local buckling deformation range.
In this study the support deflection effects in beam-girder slabs which are broadly being adopted in building structures are studied for both distributed loads and concentrated vehicle loads. Taking the finite element analysis of slabs supported with one or two cross beams, the member forces of slabs including the support stiffness have been calculated. Based on the obtained numerical results and regression analysis of those, correction factors of member forces for slabs supported with girders and cross beams have been proposed. Finally, the validity of the proposed correction factors are demonstrated through a typical design example.
This paper proposes a transfer matrix method for the bending vibration of two types of tapered beams subjected to axial force, and it is applied to analyze tapered beams with an edge or multiple edge open cracks. One beam type is assumed to be reduced linearly in the cross-section height along the beam length. The other type is a tapered beam in which the cross-section height and width with the same taper ratio is linearly reduced simultaneously. Each crack is modeled as two sub-elements connected by a rotational spring, and the method can evaluate the effect of cracking on the desired number of eigenfrequencies using a minimum number of subdivisions. Among the power series available for the solutions, the roots of the differential equation are computed using the Frobenius method. The computed results confirm the accuracy of the method and are compared with previously reported results. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated by examining specific examples, and the effects of cracking and axial loading are carefully examined by a comparison of the single and double tapered beam results.
Mega composite structure systems have been widely used in high rise buildings in China. Compared to other structures, this type of composite structure systems has a larger cross-section with less weight. Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) laced column to box-beam connections are gaining popularity, in particular for the mega composite structure system in high rise buildings. To enable a better understanding of the destruction characteristics and aseismic performance of these connections, three different connection types of specimens including single-limb bracing, cross bracing and diaphragms for core area of connections were tested under low cyclic and reciprocating loading. Hysteresis curves and skeleton curves were obtained from cyclic loading tests under axial loading. Based on these tested curves, a new trilinear hysteretic restoring force model considering rigidity degradation is proposed for CFST laced column to box-beam connections in a mega composite structure system, including a trilinear skeleton model based on calculation, law of stiffness degradation and hysteresis rules. The trilinear hysteretic restoring force model is compared with the experimental results. The experimental data shows that the new hysteretic restoring force model tallies with the test curves well and can be referenced for elastic-plastic seismic analysis of CFST laced column to composite box-beam connection in a mega composite structure system.

Timoshenko beam model is widely exploited in the literature to examine the mechanical behavior of stubby beam-like components. Timoshenko beam theory is well-known to require the shear correction factor in order to recognize the nonuniform shear distribution at a section. While a variety of shear correction factors are appeared in the literature so far, there is still no consensus on the most appropriate form of the shear correction factor. The Saint-Venant's flexure problem is first revisited in the frame work of the classical theory of elasticity and a highly accurate approximate closed-form solution is presented employing the extended Kantorovich method. The resulted approximate solution for the elasticity field is then employed to introduce two shear correction factors consistent with the Cowper's and energy approaches. The mathematical form of the proposed shear correction factors are then simplified and compared with the results available in the literature over an extended range of Poisson's and aspect ratios. The proposed shear correction factors do not exhibit implausible issue of negative values and do not result in numerical instabilities too. Based on the comprehensive discussion on the shear correction factors, a piecewise definition of shear correction factor is introduced for rectangular cross-sections having excellent agreement with the numerical results in the literature for both shallow and deep cross-sections.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural performance of press-formed type asymmetric column to beam connections of steel-PC composite module frames. Most of the column sections of the joints making up the modular frame use a closed square steel section. The column-beam connection using the closed column section has difficulty in reducing the workability and securing the fire resistance. In order to overcome this disadvantage, concrete is filled in the asymmetrical open type cross section of the steel plate by press forming. A total of four specimens were fabricated to investigate the structural performance of press formed type asymmetric column to beam connections. The experimental results show that the structural performance and behavior of the asymmetric columns are different depending on whether the asymmetric column cross section is composited or the column width thickness ratio. The structural performance of the press formed type asymmetric column to beam connection was evaluated by comparing the experimental results with the theoretical formulas.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the correlations of cone-beam computed tomographic findings with the apnea-hypopnea index in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Materials and Methods: Forty patients with obstructive sleep apnea were selected from the ear-nose-throat (ENT) outpatient clinic, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University. Cone-beam computed tomography was performed for each patient at the end of both inspiration and expiration. Polysomnography was carried out, and the apnea-hypopnea index was obtained. Linear measurements, including cross-sectional area and the SNA and SNB angles, were obtained. Four oral and maxillofacial radiologists categorized pharyngeal and retropalatal airway morphology and calculated the airway length and volume. Continuous data were tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and reported as the mean and standard deviation or as the median and range. Categorical data were presented as numbers and percentages, and the significance level was set at P<0.05. Results: The minimal value of the cross-sectional area, SNB angle, and airway morphology at the end of inspiration demonstrated a statistically significant association (P<0.05) with the apnea-hypopnea index, with excellent agreement. No statistically significant difference was found in the airway volume, other linear measurements, or retropalatal airway morphology. Conclusion: Cone-beam computed tomographic measurements in obstructive sleep apnea patients may be used as a supplement to a novel radiographic classification corresponding to the established clinical apnea-hypopnea index classification.

The realization of partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model beams with isotropic cross section and anisotropic degree of coherence function is investigated theoretically. An optical system is devised to transform diffused light generated by passing the Gaussian beam of the He-Ne laser thorough a rotating holographic diffuser to the partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model beam with isotropic cross section and anisotropic degree of coherence function. Analytic design equations are formulated and design examples are presented.
Steel -Concrete Composite two girder railway bridges applying high performance steel with extra thick plate have economic and aesthetic advantages due to the simplification of manufacturing and construction process. However, steel bridges are seldom adopted in domestic railway bridge, since steel bridges are not efficient as R.C bridges considering dynamic characteristics and noise, etc. While highway bridges do not have lower horizontal bracing and larger interval of diaphragm cross beam, railway bridges install lower horizontal bracings to control the torsion due to heavy eccentrical line load. Accurate finite element analysis were performed with the parameters of existence of bracing and bracing shape, with the cross beam interval and stiffness, etc. To find out the effects of secondary members such as horizontal bracings and diaphragms, static md dynamic analysis have been performed by using finite element method. In this study, few member plate-girder bridges are analyzed with variable span lengths to examine the dynamic behavior and limits of damping. And though lateral bracings are members against torsion, but lateral bracing's absence is no big problem. Time history analysis using mode superposition method makes proof of this result.
