  • Changes in air temperature, CO2 concentration and precipitation due to climate change are expected to have a significant impact on soybean productivity. This study was conducted to evaluate the climate change impact on growth and development of determinate soybean cultivar in the southern parts of Korea. The high temperature during vegetative period, which does not accompany the increase of CO2 concentration, increased the canopy photosynthetic rate in soybean, but after flowering, the high temperature above the optimal ranges interrupts the photosynthetic metabolism. In yield and yield components, high temperature reduced both the pod and seed number and single seed weight, resulting in a reduction of total seed yield. On the other hand, the increase in CO2 concentration dramatically increased the canopy photosynthetic rate over the whole growth period. In addition, high CO2 concentration increased the number of pods and seeds, which had a positive effect on total seed yield. Under concurrent elevation of air temperature and CO2 concentration, canopy photosynthesis increased significantly, but enhanced canopy photosynthesis did not lead to an increase in soybean seed yield. The increase in biomass and branch by enhanced canopy photosynthesis seems to be attributed to an increase in the total number of pods and seeds per plant, which compensates for the negative effects of high temperature on pod development. However, Single seed weight tended to decrease rapidly by high temperature, regardless of CO2 concentration level. Elevated CO2 concentration did not compensate for the poor distribution of assimilations from source to sink caused by high temperature. These results show that the damage of future soybean yield and quality is closely related to high temperature stress during seed filling period.

  • This study was carried out to estimate of leaf area index (LAI) rapidly using plant canopy analyzer, comparing with specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR) in rice from 2001 to 2002 at Honam Agricultural Research Institute in Iksan Korea. The relationship between LAI values taken by plant canopy analyzer and by leaf area meter showed high correlation at each growth stages of rice. LAIs obtained by plant canopy analyzer were highly correlated with that by leaf area meter which were the highest in Dongjinbyeo and the lowest in Hapcheon1. Specific leaf area (SLA) of all rice cultivars were tend to decrease remarkably with the progress of growth stage. It was found that the SLA of Dasanbyeo was the highest and that of Hapcheon1 was the lowest among rice cultivars tested. Leaf area ratios (LARs) was also decreased with the progress of growth stage.

  • Research and technological advances in the field of remote sensing have greatly enhanced the ability to detect and quantify physical and biological stresses that affect the productivity of agricultural crops. Reflectance in specific visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum have proved useful in detection of nutrient deficiencies. Especially crop canopy sensors as a ground remote sensing measure the amount of light reflected from nearby surfaces such as leaf tissue or soil and is in contrast to aircraft or satellite platforms that generate photographs or various types of digital images. Multi-spectral vegetation indices derived from crop canopy reflectance in relatively wide wave band can be used to monitor the growth response of plants in relation to environmental factors. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), where NDVI = (NIR-Red)/(NIR+Red), was originally proposed as a means of estimating green biomass. The basis of this relationship is the strong absorption (low reflectance) of red light by chlorophyll and low absorption (high reflectance and transmittance) in the near infrared (NIR) by green leaves. Thereafter many researchers have proposed the other indices for assessing crop vegetation due to confounding soil background effects in the measurement. The green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI), where the green band is substituted for the red band in the NDVI equation, was proved to be more useful for assessing canopy variation in green crop biomass related to nitrogen fertility in soils. Consequently ground remote sensing as a non destructive real-time assessment of nitrogen status in plant was thought to be useful tool for site specific crop nitrogen management providing both spatial and temporal information.

  • A field experiment was conducted to study both the distribution characteristics of shortwave radiation in the soybean canopy and its relationship with dry matter production. The soybean 'Paldalkong' was sown with the space of 45${\times}$10cm at Suwon on May 27. 1988. The extinction coefficient of solar radiation remained constant (0.53) after full canopy was reached. The 31.9% of the incoming solar radiation was transmitted. The reflected radiation from the plant canopy increased lineary with incoming solar radiation (R$^2$=0.9346). As leaf area index become larger than 2.5. the reflected radiation showed more significant linear relationship with the differences in the radiations between incoming and transmitted radiation than incoming solar radiation (R$^2$=0.9558). The mean reflectance during the growing period was 24.7%. A significant linear relationship (R$^2$=0.9930) had been admitted between the accumulated solar radiation intercepted by the canopy and dry matter production of 'Paldalkong' until the 35th day of ripening stage. The conversion efficiency of solar radiation intercepted to dry matter of soybean was 1.45g MJ$\^$-1/.

  • The three Korean wheat cultivars with different plant types; the erect, the middle and the creeping growth habit, were studied for their utilization to solar radiation, temperature changes on the furrow and to provide optimum planting space for producing the high yield in 2003. The average solar radiation rate was lowest for creeping type ($39.2\%$) and highest for erect type ($75.8\%$) The correlation coefficient between the coverage rate and the solar transmission rate was r = 0.8624 which was significant at $5\%$ level. The relative growth of the plant, tiller rate and leaf size was increased in the erect and the middle type at lower plant density, while no change on plant growth at creeping type regardless of plant density. The increase of leaf size in the lower plant density was due to longer flag and the first leaf than those of other plant types. The temperature on the furrow of growing plants was changed by the canopy. The changes in temperature pattern on the furrow according to plant types during winter season was different compared to the non plant ground. The temperature of the nonplant ground was the lowest due to solar reduction increasing the amount of cool air flowing in the furrow.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of runoff and soil losses from sloping runoff plots under three cropping practices. Twenty-nine runoff plots having slopes of 10, 20, and 30 percent in gradient, and lengths of 10, 20 and 30 meter, respectively, were cultivated with soybean, alfalfa, and fallow conditions during 1989~1990 seasons. Crop stages were grouped based on crop canopy conditions and the cropping management factors of the Univer- sal Soil Loss Equation were derived as ratios of the soil losses to fallow conditions. The results from this study are summarized as follows : 1. Annual rainfall erosivity factor at Ichun station varied from 127 to 1336, averaging 472 and 200 in 1989. The month variations reach the peak in July, being 19& 2. Canopy cover percent for soybean that was taken by a photographic method increased sharply during 30 to 80 days after seeding and the results were used to identify periods for the six crop stages. 3. Annual average runoff rates from soybean and alfalfa plots were 35 and 16 percent of those from fallow ones, respectively. The runoff rates decreased as the crops grew. 4. Soil losses from soybean and alfalfa plots were 14 and 16 percent of those from fallow plots. And the crop coefficients were proposed for different crop stages.

  • The irrigation schedule system using early detection of crop water stress is required to maintain crop production and save water resource. However, because previous studies focused on the crop under stress dominant condition, the crop physiological properties, which can be measured by remote sensing technique, on early crop water stress condition are not well known. In this study, the canopy temperature, MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI), and Chlorophyll/Carotenoid Index (CCI) are observed on the soybeans given the early water stress using thermal imaging camera and hyperspectral camera. The increased canopy temperature and decreased MTCI are consist with the previous studies which are for the crop of stress dominant-sign. However, the CCI was increased contrary to expectation because it may faster the reduction of carotenoid than chlorophyll in early stage. These behaviors will be useful to not only develop the irrigation system but also using the early detection of crop stress.
