R-curve based on the size effect law previously developed for geometrically similar specimens (geometry type III) is extended to geometries with variable depth (geometry type I) as well as with variable notch (geometry type II), where the R-curve is defined as the envelope of the family of critical strain energy release rates from specimens of different sizes. The results show that the extended R-curve for type I tends to be the same for different specimen configurations, while it is greatly dependent on specimen geometry in terms of the initial crack length. Furthermore, the predicted load-deflection responses from the suggested R-curve are found to agree well with the testing results on concrete and rock materials. Besides, maximum loads for type II specimen are predicted well from the extended R-curve.
Cavitation corrosion in many industrial plants has recently become a serious issue. Cavitation corrosion has generally been investigated using a vibratory method based on ASTM G32 standard, and the test can be divided into direct cavitation and indirect cavitation. Cavitation corrosion test uses the vibration frequency of the horn of 20 kHz with constant peak-to-peak displacement amplitude. In this work, the peak-to-peak amplitude was controlled from 15 ㎛ to 85 ㎛, and electrochemical measurements were obtained during indirect cavitation. The relationship between cavitation corrosion rate and electrochemical properties was discussed. Corrosion steps of carbon steel at the initial stage under cavitation condition in 3.5 % NaCl can be proposed. When the cavitation strength is relatively low, corrosion of the steel is more affected by the electrochemical process than by the mechanical process; but when the cavitation strength is relatively high, corrosion of the steel is affected more by the mechanical process than by the electrochemical process. This work confirmed that the critical ultrasonic amplitude of 0.42 %C carbon steel is 53.8 ㎛, and when the amplitude is less than 53.8 ㎛, the corrosion effect during the cavitation corrosion process is higher than the mechanical effect.
In this study, fracture tests were carried out in order to investigate the fracture behavior of SFRC(Steel Fiber Peinforced Concrete) with initial cracks. The relationships between loading. strain, mld-span deflections and CMOD(Crack Mouth Opening Displacement) of the beams were observed under the three point loading system. The effect of the fiber content and the initial crack ratio on the concrete fracture behavior were studied and the fracture toughness, the critical energy release ratio and the fracture energy were also calcul ated from the test results. From the test results, it was known that when the fiber contents are between 0.5% and 1.0%, and 1.5% the average fracture energy of SFRC specimens is about 7~10 times. and about 15 times better than that of the plam concrete specimens respectively.ively.
Background: Kori unit #1 is permanently shut down after a 40-year lifetime. The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission recommends establishing initial decommissioning plans for all nuclear and radwaste treatment facilities. Therefore, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) must establish an initial and final decommissioning plan for radwaste-treatment facilities. Radiation safety assessment, which constitutes one chapter of the decommissioning plan, is important for establishing a decommissioning schedule, a strategy, and cost. It is also a critical issue for the government and public to understand. Materials and Methods: This study provides a method for assessing external radiation dose to workers during decommissioning. An external dose is calculated following each exposure scenario, decommissioning strategy, and working schedule. In this study, exposure dose is evaluated using the deterministic method. Physical characterization of the facility is obtained by both direct measurement and analysis of the drawings, and radiological characterization is analyzed using the annual report of KAERI, which measures the ambient dose every month. Results and Discussion: External doses are calculated at each stage of a decommissioning strategy and found to increase with each successive stage. The maximum external dose was evaluated to be 397.06 man-mSv when working in liquid-waste storage. To satisfy the regulations, working period and manpower must be managed. In this study, average and cumulative exposure doses were calculated for three cases, and the average exposure dose was found to be about 17 mSv/yr in all the cases. Conclusion: For the three cases presented, the average exposure dose is well below the annual maximum effective dose restriction imposed by the international and domestic regulations. Working period and manpower greatly affect the cost and entire decommissioning plan; hence, the chosen option must take account of these factors with due consideration of worker safety.

Interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon/epoxy composite materials has been studied under tensile and flexural loading by the use of width tapered double cantilever beam(WTDCB) and end notched flexure(ENF) specimens. This study has significantly examined the effect of various interfacial ply orientation, ${\alpha}(0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ})$ and crack propagation direction, ${\theta}(0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ})$ in terms of critical strain energy release rate through experiments. Twelve differently layered laminates were investigated. The data reduction for evaluating the fracture energy is based on compliance method and beam theory. Beam theory is used to analyze the effect of crack propagation direction. The geometry and lay-up sequence of specimens are considered various conditions such as skewness parameter, beam volume, and so on. The results show that the fiber bridging occurred due to the non-midplane crack propagation and causes the difference of fracture energy evaluated by both methods. For safer and more reliable composite structures, we obtain the optimal stacking sequence from initial fracture energy in each mode.

The specific some types of compressors are appropriate for a use in hydrogen gas station. Metal diaphragm type of hydrogen compressor is one of them, which can satisfy the critical requirements of maintaining gas purity and producing high pressure over 850 bar. The objective of this study is to investigate an characteristics of compression through two-way Fluid-Structure-Interaction (FSI) analysis as bulk modulus and initial volume of oil independently varies. Deflection of diaphragm, oil density, gas and oil pressure were analyzed during a certain period of compression process. According to the analysis results, bulk modulus and initial volume remarkably affected deflection of diaphragm, oil density, gas and oil pressure. The highest gas pressure were attained with the highest bulk modulus of $7e^9\;N/m^2$ and the lowest initial oil volume of 80 cc.
Connections with damage concentrated to pre-selected components can enhance seismic resilience for moment resisting frames. These pre-selected components always yield early to dissipate energy, and their energy dissipation mechanisms vary from one to another, depending on their position in the connection, geometry configuration details, and mechanical characteristics. This paper presents behaviour insights on two types of beam-to-beam connections that the angles were designed as energy dissipation components, through the results of experimental study and finite element analysis. Firstly, an experimental programme was reviewed, and key responses concerning the working mechanism of the connections were presented, including strain distribution at the critical section, section force responses of essential components, and initial stiffness of test specimens. Subsequently, finite element models of three specimens were established to further interpret their behaviour and response that were not observable in the tests. The moment and shear force transfer paths of the composite connections were clarified through the test results and finite element analysis. It was observed that the bending moment is mainly resisted by axial forces from the components, and the dominant axial force is from the bottom angles; the shear force at the critical section is primarily taken by the slab and the components near the top flange. Lastly, based on the insights on the load transfer path of the composite connections, preliminary design recommendations are proposed. In particular, a resistance requirement, quantified by a moment capacity ratio, was placed on the connections. Design models and equations were also developed for predicting the yield moment resistance and the shear resistance of the connections. A flexible beam model was proposed to quantify the shear resistance of essential components.
PURPOSES : The piezoelectric energy road analysis technology using a three-dimensional finite element method was developed to investigate pavement behaviors when piezoelectric energy harvesters and a new polyurethane surface layer were installed in field conditions. The main purpose of this study is to predict the long-term performance of the piezoelectric energy road through the proposed analytical steps. METHODS : To predict the stresses and strains of the piezoelectric energy road, the developed energy harvesters were embedded into the polyurethane surface layer (50 mm from the top surface). The typical type of triaxial dump truck loading was applied to the top of each energy harvester. In this paper, a general purpose finite element analysis program called ABAQUS was used and it was assumed that a harvester is installed in the cross section of a typical asphalt pavement structure. RESULTS : The maximum tensile stress of the polyurethane surface layer in the initial fatigue model occurred up to 0.035 MPa in the transverse direction when the truck tire load was loaded on the top of each harvester. The maximum tensile stresses were 0.025 MPa in the intermediate fatigue model and 0.013 MPa in the final fatigue model, which were 72% and 37% lower than that of the initial stage model, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : The main critical damage locations can be estimated between the base layer and the surface layer. If the crack propagates, bottom-up cracking from the base layer is the main cracking pattern where the tensile stress is higher than in other locations. It is also considered that the possibility of cracking in the top-down direction at the edge of energy harvester is more likely to occur because the material strength of the energy harvester is much higher and plays a role in the supporting points. In terms of long-term performance, all tensile stresses in the energy harvester and polyurethane layer are less than 1% of the maximum tensile strength and the possibility of fatigue damage was very low. Since the harvester is embedded in the surface layer of the polyurethane, which has higher tensile strength and toughness, it can assure a good, long-term performance.
The disc-pad brake system is an important part of automobile safety system. During braking, the kinetic energy and potential energies of a moving vehicle are converted into the thermal energy through frictional heat between the brake disc and the pads. Most of the thermal energy dissipated through the brake disc. The temperature could be exceed the critical value for a given material, which leads to undesirable effects, such as the brake fade, premature wear, brake fluid vaporization, bearing failure, thermal cracks, and thermallyexcited vibration. The object of the present study is to investigate temperature field and temperature variation of brake disc and pad during single brake. The brake disc is decelerated at the initial speed with constant acceleration, until the disc comes to stop. The pad-disc brake assembly is built by 3D model with the appropriate boundary condition. In the simulation process, the mechanical loads are applied to the thermomechanical coupling analysis in order to simulate the process of heat produced by friction.
With the advance of computer and communication technologies, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are increasingly used in many aspects of our daily life. However, since the battery lifetime of WSN nodes is restricted, the WSN lifetime is also limited. Therefore, it is crucial to determine this limited lifetime in advance for preventing service interruptions in critical applications. This paper proposes a feasible static analysis approach to estimating the worstcase lifetime of a WSN. Assuming known routes with a given sensor network topology and SMAC as the underlying MAC protocol, we statically estimate the lifetime of each sensor node with a fixed initial energy budget. These estimations are then compared with the results obtained through simulation which run with the same energy budget on each node. Experimental results of our research on TinyOS applications indicate that our approach can safely and accurately estimate worst-case lifetime of the WSN. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first one to estimate the worst-case lifetime of WSNs through a static analysis method.
