A Comparison and Analysis of the Levee Height Determination Methods in Korea and the USA (우리나라와 미국의 제방고 산정 기법에 대한 비교 분석)

  • A levee height is determined by adding a deterministic freeboard to a flood water level in Korea. In the USA, a levee height is determined by choosing a value conditionally among the freeboard criteria and the levels resulted from a probabilistic method. The probabilistic method adopts a conditional non-exceedance probability (CNP) which is the probability that the target stage will not be exceeded given a specific flood event. The purpose of the study is to compare Korean criterion for levee height estimation with that of the USA. Levee heights were determined according to the above two criteria at twenty-five cross sections in five streams. The results show that Korean criterion on average yields levee heights 20 cm higher than those calculated by the criterion of the USA. The larger the flood discharges become, the higher the levee height differences are usually. It is caused by the freeboard estimation criterion of Korea that the larger design flood is, the higher freeboard is given. Korean criterion, however, resulted in lower levee heights for smaller streams than those by the criterion of the USA. To sum it up, the Korean levee height criteria can result in overestimation or underestimation depending on flood discharge amount, being compared with the criteria of the USA. The Korean freeboard especially needs to be increased for smaller flood discharges.

  • In this paper, a novel algorithm for PD localization in power transformers based on wavelet de-noising technique and energy criterion is proposed. Partial discharge is one of the main failures in power transformers. The localization of which could be very useful for maintenance systems. Acoustic signals due to a PD event are transient, irregular and non-repetitive. So wavelet transform is an efficient tool for this signal processing problem that gives a time-frequency demonstration. First, different wavelet based de-noising methods are analyzed. Then, a reasonable structure for threshold value determining and applying manner on signals is presented. Evaluated errors are good evidences for choices. Next, applying the elimination low energy frequency bands is discussed and developed as a de-noising method. Time differences between signals are used for PD localization. Different ways in time arrival detection are introduced and a novel approach in energy criterion method is presented. At the end, the quality of algorithm is verified through the different assays in lab.

  • This paper is concerned with tasking and guidance of networked airborne sensors to achieve fault-tolerant sensing. The sensors are coordinated to locate hostile transmitters by intercepting and processing their signals. Faults occur when some sensor-carrying vehicles engaged in target location missions are lost. Faults effectively change the network architecture and therefore degrade the network performance. The first objective of the paper is to optimally allocate a finite number of sensors to targets to maximize the network life and availability. To that end allocation policies are solved from relevant Markov decision problems. The sensors allocated to a target must continue to adjust their trajectories until the estimate of the target location reaches a prescribed accuracy. The second objective of the paper is to establish a criterion for vehicle guidance for which fault-tolerant sensing is achieved by incorporating the knowledge of vehicle loss probability, and by allowing network reconfiguration in the event of loss of vehicles. Superior sensing performance in terms of location accuracy is demonstrated under the established criterion.

  • This paper propose a procedure to estimate the system lifetime distribution using simulation method in a parametric framework and also develop the criterion for terminating the simulation. We assume that a system is composed of many components whose lifetime and repair time distributions are general, and repair of each component is imperfect or not. General simulation algorithms can not be adopted for this case, due to the dependency of successive operating times and the discontinuity in base line intensity function of failure process. Then we propose algorithms for generating failure times subject to imperfect repair. We develop the event time tracking logic for identifying the system failure time, and also develop the criterion for terminating the simulation. Our procedure is composed of two phases. The first phase of the procedure is to generate the system failure times from the inputs. The second phase is to estimate the lifetime distribution of the system. The best model is selected by a fully automated procedure among well-known parametric families, and the required parameters are estimated. We give examples to show the accuracy of our procedure and the effect of repair effect of components to system MTTF(Mean Time To Failure).

Coupling numerical modeling and machine-learning for back analysis of cantilever retaining wall failure

  • In this paper we back-analyze a failure event of a 9 m high concrete cantilever wall subjected to earth loading. Granular soil was deposited into the space between the wall and a nearby rock slope. The wall segments were not designed to carry lateral earth loading and collapsed due to excessive bending. As many geotechnical programs rely on the Mohr-Coulomb (MC) criterion for elastoplastic analysis, it is useful to apply this failure criterion to the concrete material. Accordingly, the back-analysis is aimed to search for the suitable MC parameters of the concrete. For this study, we propose a methodology for accelerating the back-analysis task by automating the numerical modeling procedure and applying a machine-learning (ML) analysis on FE model results. Through this analysis it is found that the residual cohesion and friction angle have a highly significant impact on model results. Compared to traditional back-analysis studies where good agreement between model and reality are deemed successful based on a limited number of models, the current ML analysis demonstrate that a range of possible combinations of parameters can yield similar results. The proposed methodology can be modified for similar calibration and back-analysis tasks.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate fracture strength of WA-vitrified and resinoid bond grinding wheels by means of acoustic emission. The paper conducts tension test, compression test, splitting tensile test and bending test with AE measuring system. These tests have been carried out in accordance with the grain sizes and grades of grinding wheels. The fracture strength of grinding wheels is evaluated by the clarification of biaxal fracture criterion of Babel and Sines. It clarifies the influence of factors of grinding wheel upon AE characteristics and evaluates the predictability of life of grinding wheels and the perception of fracture.

  • The purpose of this paper is to derive a quantified approach for Operator Manual Actions (OMAs) based on the existing fire Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) methodology developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The existing fire HRA method was reviewed, and supplementary considerations for OMA quantification were established through a comparative analysis with NUREG-1852 criteria and the review of the existing literature. The OMA quantification approach involves a timeline that considers the occurrence of Multiple Spurious Operations (MSOs) during a Main Control Room Abandonment (MCRA) determination and movement towards the Remote Shutdown Panel (RSP) in the event of a Main Control Room (MCR) fire. The derived failure probability of an OMA from the approach proposed in this paper is expected to enhance the understanding of its reliability. Therefore, it allows moving beyond the deterministic classification of "reliable" or "unreliable" in NUREG-1852. Also, in the event of a nuclear power plant fire where multiple OMAs are required within a critical time range, it is anticipated that the OMA failure probability could serve as a criterion for prioritizing OMAs and determining their order of importance.

  • To reduce damage from high concentration ozone in the air, we have researched how to predict high concentration ozone before it occurs. High concentration ozone is a rare event and its reaction mechanism has nonlinearities and complexities. In this paper, we have tried to apply and consider as many methods as we could. We clustered the data using the fuzzy c-mean method and took a rejection sampling to fill in the missing and abnormal data. Next, correlations of the input component and output ozone concentration were calculated to transform more correlated components by modified log transformation. Then, we made the prediction models using Dynamic Polynomial Neural Networks. To select the optimal model, we adopted a minimum bias criterion. Finally, to evaluate suggested models, we compared the two models. One model was trained and tested by the transformed data and the other was not. We concluded that the modified transformation effected good to ideal performance In some evaluations. In particular, the data were related to seasonal characteristics or its variation trends.

  • The concept of VLDT (Variable Low DNBR Trip), a new CPC trip function, was proposed and applied to the events of increase in secondary heat removal, such as an excess feedwater event anti an IOSGADV (Inadvertent Opening S/G Atmospheric Dump Valve). Major assumption used in this study was no time delay to LOOP (Loss of Offsite Power) after turbine trip. In case of using this VLDT function, safety criterion of DNB would not be violated under the same condition as previous analysis without any change in thermal margin.

Prediction of Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure Using Hotelling's T-Square Statistic (Hotelling의 T-square 통계량을 이용한 강우유발 사면붕괴 예측)

  • A new technique is presented to detect unstable slope behavior, based on Hotelling's T2 analysis of pore pressure and water content obtained during flume tests using granitic and gneissic weathered soils. Three sets of pore pressure-water content values were simultaneously obtained during each test, and T2 statistics at the 90.0% and 95.0% confidence levels were calculated based on the correlations between values. The results show that unsuccessful detection of some local failures of the flume slope depended on the sensor position. In the case of global slope failures, anomalous behavior was detected between several hundred and several thousand seconds before the event as T2 statistics exceeded the confidence interval 90%. Hotelling's T2 analysis provides a single control criterion because it enables correlations between diverse measured values within the same slope; the criterion also includes stepwise criteria for a forecasting and warning system based on confidence levels.
