The heat of hydration of cement causes the internal temperature rise at early age, particulary in massive concrete structures such as a footing of nuclear reactor building or a dam. As the result of the temperature rise and restraint of foundation, the thermal stress may induce cracks in concrete. Therefore, the prediction of the thermal stress is very important in the design and construction stages in order to control the cracks developed in massive concrete structures. And, in case of young concrete, creep effect by the temperature load is larger than That of old concrete. Thus the effect of creep must be considered for checking the cracks, serviceability, durability and leakage. This study is composed of two items. The first, it is to develop a finite element program which is capable of simulating the temperature history in mass concrete. The second, when the thermal stress of mass concrete structures considering creep is calculated by using the modified elastic modulus due to the inner temperature change. It is shown that the analytical results of this study is in comparably good agreement with JCI's analytical results.

The heat of hydration of cement the causes the internal temperature rise at early age, particulary in massive concrete structures such as a mat-slab of nuclear reactor building or a dam or a large footing. As the result of the temperature rise and restraint of foundation, the thermal stress enough to induce concrete cracks can occur. Therefore, the prediction of the thermal stress is very important in the design and construction stages in order to control the cracks developed in massive concrete structures. And, more creep and shrinkage take place at elevated temperatures in young concrete, Thus the effect of creep and shrinkage must be considered for checking the safety and servicebility(crack, durability and leakage).

The heat generation of cement causes the internal temperature rise and volume change at early age, particulary in massive concrete structures. As the results of the temperature rise and restraint conditions, the thermal stress may induce cracks in concrete. Therefore, the prediction of the thermal stress is very important in the design and construction in order to control the cracks developed in mass concrete. In case of young concrete, creep effect by the temperature load is larger than that of old concrete. Thus, the effect of creep must be considered for checking the cracks, serviceability, durability and leakage. This paper is concentrated on the development of a finite element program which is capable of simulating the temperature history and the thermal stress considering creep and the modified elastic modulus due to inner temperature change and maturity. The analytical results in the inner parts highest important to control cracks are in good agreement with experimental data. Therefore this study may provide available method to control the cracks.
With the span and arch rib size of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges increase, the hydration heat of pumped mass concrete inside large-size steel tube causes a significant temperature variation, leading to a risk of thermal stress-induced cracking during construction. In order to tackle this phenomenon, a hydration heat conduction model based on hydration degree was established through a nonlinear temperature analysis incorporating an exothermic hydration process to obtain the temperature field of large-size CFST. Subsequently, based on the evolution of elastic modulus based on hydration degree and early-age creep rectification, the finite element model (FEM) model and analytical study were respectively adopted to investigate the variation of the thermal stress of CFST during hydration heat release, and reasonable agreement between the results of two methods is found. Finally, a comparative study of the thermal stress with and without considering early-age creep was conducted.

This study examined the long-term inelastic characteristics, including unrestrained shrinkage and creep, of low-heat cement concrete under different ambient curing temperatures. To achieve the designed compressive strength of 42MPa, water-to-binder ratios were selected to be 27.5, 30, and 32.5% for curing temperatures of 5, 20, and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. Test results showed that the shrinkage strains of concrete mixtures tended to decrease with the decrease in curing temperature because of the delayed evaporation of internal capillary and gel waters. Meanwhile, creep strains were higher in concrete specimens under lower curing temperature due to the occurrence of the transition temperature creep. The design models of KCI provision gave better accuracy in comparison with test results than those of ACI 209, although a correction factor for low-heat cement needs to be established in the KCI provision.

To predict thermal stress independent of uncertain material properties of early age concrete, such as elastic modulus and creep, thermal stress device is used. In order to verify the application of various degree of constraint in the thermal stress device, a series of experiments were performed on mass concrete followed by numerical simulation. The application of various degrees of constraint can be achieved by using constraint frame material with different thermal expansion coefficient, length, and cross sectional area. Temperature development in the real structure has been simulated using temperature and humidity control chamber. The results from experiments and numerical analysis show that the thermal stresses estimated from simulation agree well with the general stress variations in the real structure even though the properties of concrete are uncertain.

The heat of hyderation of cement causes the internal temperature rise and volume change at early age, paticular in massive concrete structures. As the results of the temperature rise and extenal restraint conditions, the themal stress may induce cracks in concrete. Therefore various techenuques of the themal stress control of the mass concrete has been widely used. One of these techniques is pipe-cooling which is considered in this study. The objective of this paper is to develop finite element program which is capable of simulating the temperature history and the thermal stress considering pipe-cooling, creep and the modified elastic modulus dud to maturity effect.
Our ability to predict hydration behavior is becoming increasingly relevant to the concrete community as modelers begin to link material performance to the dynamics of material properties and chemistry. At early ages, the properties of concrete are changing rapidly due to chemical transformations that affect mechanical, thermal and transport responses of the composite. At later ages, the resulting, nano-, micro-, meso- and macroscopic structure generated by hydration will control the life-cycle performance of the material in the field. Ultimately, creep, shrinkage, chemical and physical durability, and all manner of mechanical response are linked to hydration. As a way to enable the modeling community to better understand hydration, a review of hydration models is presented offering insights into their mathematical origins and relationships one-to-the-other. The quest for a universal model begins in the 1920's and continues to the present, and is marked by a number of critical milestones. Unfortunately, the origins and physical interpretation of many of the most commonly used models have been lost in their overuse and the trail of citations that vaguely lead to the original manuscripts. To help restore some organization, models were sorted into four categories based primarily on their mathematical and theoretical basis: (1) mass continuity-based, (2) nucleation-based, (3) particle ensembles, and (4) complex multi-physical and simulation environments. This review provides a concise catalogue of models and in most cases enough detail to derive their mathematical form. Furthermore, classes of models are unified by linking them to their theoretical origins, thereby making their derivations and physical interpretations more transparent. Models are also used to fit experimental data so that their characteristics and ability to predict hydration calorimetry curves can be compared. A sort of evolutionary tree showing the progression of models is given along with some insights into the nature of future work yet needed to develop the next generation of cement hydration models.
In a material, micro-cracks can be progressively occurred, propagated and finally lead to failure when it is subjected to cyclic or periodic loading less than its ultimate strength. This phenomenon, fatigue, is usually considered in a metal, alloy and structures under repeated loading conditions. In underground structures, a static creep behavior rather than a dynamic fatigue behavior is mostly considered. However, when compressed air is stored in a rock cavern, an inner pressure is periodically changed due to repeated in- and-out process of compressed air. Therefore mechanical properties of surrounding rock mass and an inner lining system under cyclic loading/unloading conditions should be investigated. In this study, considering an underground lined rock cavern for compressed air energy storage (CAES), the mechanical properties of a lining system, that is, concrete lining and plug under periodic loading/unloading conditions were characterized through cyclic bending tests and shear tests. From these tests, the stability of the plug was evaluated and the S-N line of the concrete lining was obtained.
