The fatalities of pedestrian account for about 40.0% of all fatalities in Korea 2005. Vehicle-Pedestrian accident generates trajectory of pedestrian. In pedestrian involved accident, the most important data to inspect accident is throw distance of pedestrian. The throw distance of pedestrian can be influenced by many variables. But existing studies have been done for simple factors. The variables that influence trajectory of pedestrian can be classified into vehicular factors, pedestrian factors, and road factors. The trajectory of pedestrian, dynamic characteristics of multi-body were analyzed by PC-CRASH, a kinetic analysis program for a traffic accident. PC-CRASH enables an analyst to investigate the effect of many variables. The influence of the offset of impact point was analyzed by Working Model. Based on the results, the variables that influence trajectory of pedestrian were vehicular frontal shape, vehicular impact speed, the offset of impact point, the height of pedestrian, friction coefficients of pedestrian. However the weight of pedestrian did not affect trajectory of pedestrian considerably.

The open section members have been used as the members of vehicle such as automotives, airplanes and trains. When vehicles are crashed, these members have absorption of the energy and it is necessary for retainment of the survival space, and as the result, the prediction for the displacement of members in this case of the crash of vehicles is very important. The displacements of members in this case of the crash of automotives show combined aspect of both axial collapse and bending collapse. In the rollover accident when bending collapse happen, the collapse of each members is progressed by the plastic hinge which made from bending moment, and therefore the research for the behavior of members under bending moment after collapse is necessary to determine the internal energy which the members can absorb and the deformed shapes of the members on the step of design. In this paper, the characteristics of bending collapse at the members of the open cross-section were studied with experiment and numerical analysis. We made a comparative studied of the result of the experiment, and changed the axis according to the parallel-axis theorem.

Entry speed of the vehicle and lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle, roll-angle associated with the overthrow, and then the structure of the road, the friction of road surface are important factors in turning on the curved road. In this study, we analyzed the state change of the vehicle causing entry speed of the vehicle and superelevation of the road, the friction coefficient by using a PC-crash Program for traffic accident reconstruction. As a result, when vehicle is turning the curved road, we could ascertain that the structure of the road and state of the road surface are a major factor about the set up of limited speed.

In order to reduce the risk of roll over crash, one of the greatest risk events, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) issued Notice of Proposed Rulemaking(NPRM) enhancing the safety standard on roof crush resistance, FMVSS No. 216 and changing some part of the test procedure. According to this NPRM, the boundary Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR) of the vehicles applied by this standard is extended from 2,722kg(6000 lb) to 4,536 kg(10000 lb) and the applied test force is increased from 1.5 times to 2.5 times of Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW). Also the current limit on the amount of roof crush, 127mm(5 inch), is replaced with a new requirement of maintaining enough headroom without touching the head of a seated 50% male dummy. In this paper, we carried out the rollover crash test on some domestic cars and investigated their safety due to the KMVSS No. 92 and the enhanced safety standard, FMVSS No. 216, respectively. The result shows that most of them can satisfy the new standards but further tests will be necessary, especially for heavier cars.

This paper presents an ASF (Aluminum Space Frame) BIW optimal design, which minimizes the weight and satisfies multi-disciplinary constraints such as the static stiffness, vibration characteristics, low-speed crash, high-speed crash and occupant protection. As only one cycle CPU time for all the analyses is 12 hours, the ASF design having 11-design variable is a large scaled problem. In this study, ISCD-II and conservative least square fitting method is used for efficient RSM modeling. Then, ALM method is used to solve the approximate optimization problem. The approximate optimum is sequentially added to remodel the RSM. The proposed optimization method used only 20 analyses to solve the 11-design variable design problem. Also, the optimal design can reduce the] $15\%$ of total weight while satisfying all of the multi-disciplinary design constraints.
The dynamic behavior of sheet metals must be examined to ensure the impact characteristics of auto-body by a finite element method. An appropriate experimental method has to be developed to acquire the material properties at the intermediate strain rate which is under 500/s in the crash analysis of auto-body. In this paper, tensile tests of various different steel sheets for an auto-body were performed to obtain the dynamic material properties with respect to the strain rate which is ranged from 0.003/sec to 200/sec. A high speed material testing machine was made for tension tests at the intermediate strain rate and the dimensions of specimens that can provide the reasonable results were determined by the finite element analysis. Stress-strain curves were obtained for each steel sheet from the dynamic tensile test and used to deduce the relationship of the yield stress and the elongation to the strain rate. These results are significant not only in the crashworthiness evaluation under car crash but also in the high speed metal forming.
Background: Motorcycles are one of the important members of commercial transportation because of the convenient use during congested traffic conditions and the ease of parking in narrow streets. This study investigates the characteristics of crashes and traffic signal violations caused by motorcycle couriers. Methods: From the national compensation data, this study analyzed the traffic crashes caused by 671 motorcycle couriers. Results: Among 671 injured couriers, 50.6% were aged less than 40 years, 49.2% run in a small business of <5 employees, and 47.2% had work experience of <6 months. Motorcycle crashes occurred mainly due to "rider overturned alone" (67.5%), in the daytime (73.5%), or on cloudy or clear days (77.2%). However, the violation rate caused by motorcycle couriers was high in couriers in a small business of <5 employees (13.9%), with work experience of <6 months (13.9%), on cloudy or clear days (12.4%), on an intersection (29.8%), in the type of "crash with a vehicle" (31.2%), or in a death accident (35.7%) Conclusion: The findings of this study can be used as a baseline in devising policies for preventing crashes of motorcycle couriers.

Traffic safety assessment is often accomplished by analyzing the number of crashes occurring in some geographic space over certain specific time duration. In this paper, we introduce a procedure that can efficiently analyze spatial and temporal changes in traffic crashes before-and-after implementation of a certain traffic controlling measure. For the analysis, crash frequency data before-and-after closing a major highway around St. Louis in Missouri was collected through Transportation Management System(TMS) database that is maintained by Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). In order to identify any spatial and temporal pattern in crashes, each crash is pinpointed on a map using the dynamic segmentation in GIS. Then, the identified pattern is statistically confirmed using an analysis of variance table. The advantage of this approach is to easily assess spatial and temporal trend of crashes that are not readily attainable otherwise. The results from this study can possibly be applied in enhancing the highway safety assessment procedure. This paper also makes several suggestions for future development of a comprehensive transportation data system in Korea which is similar to MoDOT's TMS database.

Previous studies have estimated crash prediction models with the fixed effect model which assumes the fixed value of coefficients without considering characteristics of each intersections. However the fixed effect model would estimate under estimation of the standard error resulted in over estimation of t-value. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the random effect model can be used with considering heterogeneity of AADT, geometric information and unobserved factors. In this study, data collections from 89 intersections in Daejeon and estimates of crash prediction models were conducted using the random and fixed effect negative binomial regression model for comparison and analysis of two models. As a result of model estimates, AADT, speed limits, number of lanes, exclusive right turn pockets and front traffic signal were found to be significant. For comparing statistical significance of two models, the random effect model could be better statistical significance with -1537.802 of log-likelihood at convergence comparing with -1691.327 for the fixed effect model. Also likelihood ration value was computed as 0.279 for the random effect model and 0.207 for the fixed effect model. This mean that the random effect model can be improved for statistical significance of models comparing with the fixed effect model.

Road geometry is one of the many factors that cause crashes, but the effect on traffic accident depends on weather conditions even under the same road geometry. This study identifies the variables affecting the crash severity by matching the highway accident data and weather data for 14 years from 2001 to 2014. A hierarchical ordered Logit model is used to reflect the effects of road geometry and weather condition interactions on crash severity, as well as the correlation between individual crashes in a region. Among the hierarchical models, we apply a random intercept model including interaction variables between road geometry and weather condition and a random coefficient model including regional weather characteristics as upper-level variables. As a result, it is confirmed that the effects of toll, ramp, downhill slope of 3% or more, and concrete barrier on the crash severity vary depending on weather conditions. It also shows that the combined effects of road geometry and weather conditions may not be linear depending on rainfall or snowfall levels. Finally, we suggest safety improvement measures based on the results of this study, which are expected to reduce the severity of traffic accidents in the future.
