A Feedback Control System for Suppressing Crane Oscillations with On-Off Motors

  • Crane payloads frequently swing with large amplitude motion that degrades safety and throughput. Open-loop methods have addressed this problem, but are not effective for disturbances. Closed-loop methods have also been used, but generally require the speed of the driving motors to be precisely controlled. This paper develops a feedback control method for controlling motors to cancel the measured payload oscillations by intelligently timing the ensuing on and off motor commands. The effectiveness of the oscillation suppression scheme is experimentally verified on an industrial bridge crane.

크레인 작업의 안전성 향상을 위한 작업자 체감 사고 원인 및 특별교육 현황 분석 (Analysis of Perceived Accident Causes and Special Training Status for Safety of Crane Operation)

  • Since cranes are a kind of complex human-machine systems, it is almost impossible to completely secure safety with current technologies. Therefore, managerial interventions to prevent human errors are needed for safely operating a crane. The Occupational Safety and Health law states that cabin-type crane operators should have crane drivers' licence and crane-related operators (e.g., pendent-type crane operators, slinging workers) should take a special safety training. However, statistics on industrial accidents showed that fatalities due to crane accidents (185 accidents occurred during 2013~2017) were the highest among hazardous machinery and equipment. To effectively control the crane-related accidents, voices of crane workers need to be analyzed to investigate the current status. This study surveyed perceived causes of crane accidents and status of special safety training for crane workers of 387. The survey revealed that 24.3% of the respondents experienced crane accidents and 31.4% eye-witnessed crane accidents. 79% of the respondents pointed human errors such as improper crane operation and improper slinging as the first cause. Lastly, only 16.7% of the respondents took a professional special safety training; but the rest took lecture-based or incomplete education. The findings of the present study can be applied to improve crane-related policies and special safety training systems.

  • In this paper, the container crane which transports containers between a container ship and trucks in the harbor is modeled. The equation of motion is simplified for control purpose. The pole placement technique is used to control the crane to minimize load swing angle The objective of the control is to transfer the load as quickly as possible, while minimizing the amplitude of swing at the end of transfer. Computer simulations are provided.

기구학적 모델 기반 임업용 크레인 팁 제어방안에 관한 연구(1): RR 매니퓰레이터 (A Feasibility Study in Forestry Crane-Tip Control Based on Kinematics Model (1): The RR Manipulator)

  • 본 연구는 기계화 목재 생산 작업에 가장 많이 활용되는 크레인 작업의 효율성을 높이기 위하여 엔드이펙터를 직관적으로 수직 또는 수평 제어할 수 있는 크레인 팁 제어방법을 제안하고 제어성능을 확인하기 위해 수행되었다. 실험 변수에 따른 제어성능을 검증하고자 전동실린더를 이용하여 실험실 규모의 크레인을 제작하고, 크레인에 대한 순기구학/역기구학 분석을 통하여 현재 크레인 팁의 위치좌표와 각 목표점에서의 조인트 각도를 출력할 수 있도록 구성하였다. 경로점을 생성하여 제어하는 방법을 이용하였고, LBO(Lateral Boundary Offset)을 이용한 불감대 영역을 설정하도록 하였다. 뱅뱅제어(Bang-bang control)을 이용하여 적정 파라미터를 선정하였고, 경로점의 개수와 LBO 반경은 평균오차와 관계가 있었으며, 실린더의 속도는 소요시간과 관계가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 경로점의 개수가 증가, LBO 반경이 감소함에 따라 평균오차는 감소하였고, 실린더의 속도가 감소함에 따라 소요시간은 감소하였다. 비례제어를 이용하여 실린더의 속도가 매 제어주기마다 변경될 때에는 소요시간은 큰 폭으로 감소하였지만 실제 제어의 형상은 큰 범위에서 오버슈트와 언더슈트를 반복하며 제어가 이루어졌다. 따라서, 추가적으로 각각의 실린더의 속도를 상대적으로 변경할 수 있는 속도 게인을 적용하여 비례제어를 수행하였고, 10 mm 이내의 범위에서 제어가 이루어짐에 따라 20 ms의 제어주기에서 속도 게인이 적용된 비례제어만을 이용하여 크레인 팁 제어가 가능한 것으로 검증되었다.

LQ 제어를 이용한 붐형 크레인의 흔들림 제어기 설계 (Design of the Anti-sway Controller for a Boom Type Crane Using the LQ Control)

  • An LQ controller design method is proposed for effective anti-sway control of boom type crane in this paper. It is important for high productivity that the sway of a load is controlled as fast as possible when the trolley arrives to the destination with maximum velocity. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed LQ controller. simulations and experiments using the boom type crane as experimental device is carried out. Tracking performance for a step type reference and robustness for the change of working environment such as the change of load weight and parameters produced by a wire rope and disturbance by the wind arc proved by the experiment. It will be examined that boom type crane can be applied to industrial fields through experiment in this paper.

  • As a way to build more efficient and intelligent container cranes for todays hub ports, communication networks are used to interconnect numerous sensors, actuators, controllers, and operator switches and consoles that are spatially distributed over a crane. Various signals such as sensor values and operator's commands are digitized and broadcast on the network instead of using separate wiring cables. This not only makes the design and manufacturing of a crane more efficient, but also easier implementation of intelligent control algorithms. This paper presents the performance evaluation of CAN(Controller Area Network), TTP(Time Triggered Protocol) and Byteflight that can be used for cranes. Through discrete event simulation, several important quantitative performance factors such as the probability of a transmission failure, average system delay (data latency) and maximum system delay have been evaluated.

  • The most important thing in the container terminal is to handle the cargo effectively in the limited time. To achieve this object, many strategies have been introduced and applied to. If we consider the automated container terminal, it is necessary that the cargo handling equipments are equipped with more intelligent control systems. From the middle of the 1990's, an automated rail-mounted gantry crane(RMGC) and rubber-tired gantry crane(RTG) have been developed and widely used to handle containers in the yards. Recently, in these cranes, the many equipments like CCD cameras and sensors are mounted to cope with the automated terminal environment. In this paper, we try to support the development of more intelligent automated cranes which make the cargo handling be performed effectively in the yards. For this plant, the modelling, tracking control, anti-sway system design, skew motion suppressing and complicated motion control and suppressing problems must be considered. In this paper, the system modelling and a tracking control approach are discussed based on two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servosystem design.

  • The oscillation of a crane system is divided into the oscillation of container in respect of its trolley and the oscillation of trolley in relation to the whole crane system. We introduce a new type of crane system that avoids to the irreducible sway of crane system caused by hanging cables. The cables suspending the spreader are replaced by using an "anti-sway system". The proposed system is composed of mechanical arms with function of anti-sway based on conventional line system. The effectiveness of the proposed new type crane system and the controller is shown through the simulation results.

  • The recent amount of container freight continuously has been increased, but the low efficiency of container crane causes jamming frequently in transportation and cargo handling at port. It is required that the working velocity and safety are improved by control of moving the trolley as quick as possible without large overshoot and any residual swing motion of container at the destination. In this paper, a LQ controller for a container crane is proposed to accomplish an optimal design of improved control system for minimizing the swing motion at destination. In this scheme a mathematical model for the system is obtained in state space form. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through computer simulation.
