  • A hot press method was use for the optimal manufacturing condition for a shape memory alloy(SMA) composite. The bonding between the matrix and the reinforcement within the SMA composite by the hot press method was strengthened by cold rolling. In this study, the objective was to develop an on-line monitoring system for the prevention of the crack initiation and propagation by shape memory effort of SMA composite. Shape memory effect was used to prevent the SMA composite from cracking. For the system to be developed, an optimal hE parameter should be determined based on the degree of damage and crack initiation. When the SHA composite was heated by the plate heater attached at the composite, the propagating cracks appeared to be controlled by the compressive force of SMA.

  • The K-R design curve is an engineering method of linear-elastic fracture analysis under plane-stress loading conditions. By the way, linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is valid only as long as nonlinear material deformation is confined to a small region surrounding the crack tip. Like general steels, it is virtually impossible to characterize the fracture behavior with LEFM, in many materials. Critical values of J contour integral or crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) give nearly size independent measures of fracture toughness, even for relatively large amounts of crack tip plasticity. Furthermore, the crack tip opening displacement is the only parameter that can be directly measured in the fracture test. On the other. the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) test is similar to CTOD experimentally. Moreover, the test is easier to measure the fracture toughness than other method. The shape of the CTOA curve depends on material fracture behavior and, on the opening configuration of the cracked structure. CTOA parameter describes crack tip conditions in elastic-plastic materials, and it can be used as a fracture criterion effectively. In this paper, CTOA test is performed for steel JS-SS400 hot-rolled thin plates under plane-stress loading conditions. Special experimental apparatuses are used to prevent specimens from buckling and to measure crack tip opening angle for thin compact tension (CT) specimens.

  • This study proposes an algorithm for detection and analysis of cracks in digital image of concrete surface to automate the measurement process of crack characteristics such as width, length, and orientation based on image processing technique. The special features of algorithm are as follows: (1) application of morphology technique for shading correction, (2) improvement of detection performance based on enhanced binarization and shape analysis, (3) suggestion of calculation algorithms for width, length, and orientation. A MATLAB code was developed for the proposed algorithm, and then test was performed on crack images taken with digital camera to examine validity of the algorithm. Within the limited test in the present study, the proposed algorithm was revealed as accurately detecting and analyzing the cracks when compared to results obtained by a human and classical method.

  • Fracture mechanics analysis for cracked pipes is essential for applying the leak-before-break (LBB) concept to nuclear piping design. For LBB assessment, crack instability and leak rate should be predicted accurately for through-wall cracked pipes. In a nuclear piping system, elbows are connected with straight pipes by circumferential welding; this weld region is often considered a critical location. Hence, accurate crack assessment is necessary for cracks in the interface between elbows and straight pipes. In this study, the stress intensity factor (SIF) and elastic crack opening displacement (COD) were estimated through detailed 3D elastic finite element (FE) analyses. Based on the results, closed-form solutions of shape factors for calculating the SIFs and elastic CODs were proposed for circumferential through-wall cracks in the abovementioned interfaces under internal pressure. In addition, the effect of the elbow on shape factors was investigated by comparing the results with the existing solutions for a straight pipe.

  • The influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al/GFRP laminate such as the wing section was investigated. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between crack profile and delamination behavior. And a propose parameter on the delamination growth rate(d $A_{D}$/da) of Al/GFRP laminates with a saw-cut using relationship between delamination area( $A_{D}$) and cycles(N), crack length(a), stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K). Also, the fiber bridging effect factor( $F_{BE}$ ) was propose that the fiber bridging modification factor($\beta$$_{fb}$ ) to evaluate using the delamination growth rate(d $A_{D}$/da). The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between aluminum alloy sheet. Class fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan image. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip. It represents that relationship between crack length and delamination growth rate(d $A_{D}$/da) were interdependent by reciprocal action, therefore it's applicable present a model for the delamination growth rate(dA/sib D//da) in Al/GFRP laminates.minates.s.

  • Mechanical properties and hardness distributions in arc brazed joints of Dual phase steel using Cu-Al insert metal were investigated. The maximum tensile shear load was 10.4kN at the highest brazing current. It was about 54% compared to tensile load of base metal. This joint efficiency is higher than that of joint of DP steel using Cu-based filler metals which are Cu-Si, Cu-Sn. Fracture positions can be divided into two types. Crack initiation commonly occurred at three point junction among upper sheet, lower sheet and the fusion zone. However crack propagations were different with increasing the brazing current. In case of the lower current, it instantaneously propagated along with the interface between fusion zone and upper base material. On the other hand, in case of higher current, a crack propagation occurred through fusion zone. When the brazing current is low (60, 70A), the interface shape is flat type. However the interface shape is rough type, when the brazing current is high (80A). It is thought that the interface shapes were the reason why the crack propagations were different with brazing current. The interface was the intermetallic compounds which consisted of $(Fe,Al)_{0.85}Cu_{0.15}$ IMC formed by crystallization at $1200^{\circ}C$during cooling. Therefore the maximum tensile shear load and the fracture behavior were determined by a interface shape and effective sheet thickness of the fracture position.

  • The objectives of this study is to find out the relationship of crack width and residual seismic capacity of Unreinforced Masonry(URM) walls which were damaged by earthquake. Three URM walls which made the shape ratio(1/h, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0)to be a variable were tested for the objective. It was seen that the crack width increased with growing at rotation angle. Also, this study found out that failure mode affects crack type of URM. In other words, horizontal and vertical crack was increased in rocking and sliding failure mode respectively.

  • To calculate the bending frequency of a beam with a crack, the author has developed the computor programe. With a simple example, numerical calculations and experiments were carried out. The results were as follows. 1) As the values of experiments have comparatively agreed with those of calculations, it was proved that the computor program could he applied to a beam with a crack. 2) In the case that the shape of crack is narrow and deep at the fixed edges, the value of experiment may not considerably correspond with that of calculation. 3) If the bending frequency was varied a few % due to a crack, it was turned out that the beam might be fatal on strength.

  • In this paper, an improved Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method is proposed by adding enrichment function to the standard EFG approximation and a discontinuity function is implemented in constructing the shape function across the crack surface. In this method, the singularity and the discontinuity of the crack are efficiently modeled by using initial node distribution to evaluate reliable stress intensity factor, though the standard EFG method requires placing additional nodes near the crack tip. The proposed method enables the initial node distribution to be kept without any additional nodal d.o.f. and expresses the asymptotic stress field near the crack tip successfully. Numerical example verifies the improvement and the effectiveness of the method.

  • Fatigue cracked components often needs to be repaired during service. Standard repair schemes involve strengthening the component by connecting reinforcing members by means of rivets or welding by reducing the crack-tip stress intensity factors. Recent technological advances in fiber reinforced composite materials and adhesive bonding have led to the development of efficient repair schemes. In this study, the influence of various shape parameters on fatigue crack growth in the CCT type uniform thickness plates and the thin-ta-thick type stiffened panels repaired with woven fabric type Kevlar-Epoxy composite patch are studied experimentally.
