Stochastic modelling fatigue crack evolution and optimum maintenance strategy for composite blades of wind turbines

  • The composite blades of offshore wind turbines accumulate structural damage such as fatigue cracking due to harsh operation environments during their service time, leading to premature structural failures. This paper investigates various fatigue crack models for reproducing crack development in composite blades and proposes a stochastic approach to predict fatigue crack evolution and to analyse failure probability for the composite blades. Three typical fatigue models for the propagation of fatigue cracks, i.e., Miner model, Paris model and Reifsnider model, are discussed to reproduce the fatigue crack evolution in composite blades subjected to cyclical loadings. The lifetime probability of fatigue failure of the composite blades is estimated by stochastic deterioration modelling such as gamma process. Based on time-dependent reliability analysis and lifecycle cost analysis, an optimised maintenance policy is determined to make the optimal decision for the composite blades during the service time. A numerical example is employed to investigate the effectiveness of predicting fatigue crack growth, estimating the probability of fatigue failure and evaluating an optimal maintenance policy. The results from the numerical study show that the stochastic gamma process together with the proper fatigue models can provide a useful tool for remaining useful life predictions and optimum maintenance strategies of the composite blades of offshore wind turbines.

열-기계적 피로하중을 받는 균열시편 제작시간 단축에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue Loading for Time Reduction in Fabricating an Artificial Cracked Specimen)

  • 원자력발전소에서는 열교환 파이프에서 발생하는 열피로 균열을 비파괴 탐상장비를 이용하여 조기에 발견하는 것이 안전을 위해 매우 필요하며, 따라서 이를 모사한 인공균열시편 제작에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 그러나 이러한 균열은 일반 기계가공으로 제작하는 것이 불가능하여 실제 조건과 유사한 열 반복하중 하에서 제작될 수밖에 없는데, 이를 위해 많은 시간이 소요된다. 본 연구에서는 크랙성장 시뮬레이션 기법을 이용하여 이러한 균열 제작시간을 단축하기 위한 최적의 열하중 조건을 찾고자 하였다. 이를 위해 임의조건에서 시뮬레이션 및 열피로균열 발생 기초실험을 수행하여 균열 초기수명과 진전수명을 검증하였고, 이를 바탕으로 다양한 가열 및 냉각시간을 시뮬레이션 함으로써 제작시간을 최소화하는 열하중 조건을 구하였다. 시뮬레이션에서는 응력해석을 위해 상용 소프트웨어 ANSYS를 초기균열수명 계산을 위해 수치계산용 소프트웨어 ZENCRACK을 이용하여 코딩을 균열진전수명 평가를 위해 ZENCRACK 소프트웨어를 이용하였다. 그 결과 1mm 균열 제작에 소요되는 시간은 초기의 418시간에서 319시간으로 24% 단축되는 것으로 예측되었다.

Effects of Healing Agent on Crack Propagation Behavior in Thermal Barrier Coatings

  • A thermal barrier coating (TBC) with self-healing property for cracks was proposed to improve reliability during gas turbine operation, including structural design. Effect of healing agent on crack propagation behavior in TBCs with and without buffer layer was investigated through furnace cyclic test (FCT). Molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) was used as the healing agent; it was encapsulated using a mixture of tetraethyl orthosilicate and sodium methoxide. Buffer layers with composition ratios of 90 : 10 and 80 : 20 wt%, using yttria stabilized zirconia and $MoSi_2$, respectively, were prepared by air plasma spray process. After generating artificial cracks in TBC samples by using Vickers indentation, FCTs were conducted at $1100^{\circ}C$ for a dwell time of 40 min., followed by natural air cooling for 20 min. at room temperature. The cracks were healed in the buffer layer with the healing agent of $MoSi_2$, and it was found that the thermal reliability of TBC can be enhanced by introducing the buffer layer with healing agent in the top coat.

고무변성 에폭시 수지의 균열진전과정과 음향방출 특성 (Acoustic Emission during Crack Propagation Process of Rubber-Modified Epoxy Resin)

  • 균열선단에 발생하는 손상역은 재료의 파괴인성 메카니즘을 알 수 있게 하는 중요한 영역이다. 본 연구에서는 고무변성 에폭시 수지의 균열선단 손상역의 생성 및 성장 과정을 음향방출법을 이용하여 조사하였다. 고무변성 에폭시 수지의 고무함량은 5 wt%와 15 wt%로 하였고, 3점 굽힘시험편을 사용하여 모드 I 파괴시험에 대한 각 시험편의 파괴인성값을 구하였다. 또한, 균열선단의 손상역과 그 내부의 고무입자 변형상태를 편광현미경과 원자력간 현미경을 사용하여 관찰하였다. 고무변성 에폭시 수지의 균열선단부의 손상역은 파괴하중의 약 13 % 하중에서 생성이 되어, 약 57 % 하중까지 균열개시 없이 성장하였다. 57 % 하중 근처에서 개시만 균열은 최대하중부근까지 고착-활강거동을 반복하면서 안정 / 불안정 파괴로 진전하였다 이 과정에서 발생한 음향방출신호의 시간-주파수 분석결과, 고투입자 내부에서의 케비테이션 생성단계에서 주파수대역은 0.15 ∼ 0.20 MHz 이었고, 그 후의 안정 및 불안정시의 주파수 대역은 0.20∼0.30MHz 이었다.

레이저 스페클 간섭을 이용한 균열 길이 측정에 관한 연구 (A Study on Measurement of Crack Length by using Laser Speckle Interferometry)

  • More accurate and fast inspection method for mechanical parts and structure is required to guarantee the safety. Conventional methods using compliance method, eddy current method, ultrasonic wave, acoustic emission for non-destructive testing in mechanical parts and structure have been performed as the method of contact with objects to be inspected. With this reason these methods have been taken relatively much time, money, and manpower. In this study, in order to overcome these shortcomings, we used In-plane Electronic Speckle pattern Interferometry(In-plane ESPI) that was full-field measurement and noncontact method. We detected the cracks of the specimen at a real time and measured the length of the crack by using In-place ESPI system. Finally, we compared this results with conventional microscope method.

연강과 스프링압을 접합한 층상복합 강재의 피로파괴거동에 대한 연구 (Fatigue Fracture Behavior of Laminated Steel with Mild Steel and Spring Steel)

  • This study has been concentrated on the relations between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor, the fatigue limit and finally on the condition of the crack propagation along the laminated cross section of the laminated steel under the repeated plane bending through tests. The following results are obtained. 1. The fatigue limit of the laminated steel is higher than the single steel 2. The realtion between the fatigue crack growth rate, dL/dN and Stress intensity factor are ; dL/dN = 2.14 * 10$^{-11}$ $K^{2.95}$ for SUP 9 dL/dN = 1.70 * 10$^{-11}$ $K^{2.95}$ for SMS dL/dN = 9.77 * 10$^{-11}$ $K^{2.95}$ for SPMS dL/dN = 3.57 * 10$^{-8}$ $K^{1.53}$ for SPMM dL/dN = 5.5O * 10$^{-8}$ $K^{1.53}$ for MLD 3. The crack propagation of the laminated steel also tends to be completed through 3 steps; The first step proceeds swiftly, in a second slowly for a long time and last very rapidly for a short moments.

피로하중을 받는 표면균열재의 관통거동 및 지연거동 (Retardation Behavior and Crack-Through-Thickness of a Surface-cracked Specimen under Cyclic Load)

  • Fatigue life and retardtion behavior after through-thickness were examined experimentally by using a CT specimen and surface-cracked specimen. The material used was 3% Ni-Cr-Mo steel. The fatigue crack shape before through-thickness is almost semicircular, and the measured aspect ratio is larger than the value obtained by calculation using the K value proposed by Newman-Raju. It is found that the crack growth behavior on the back side after through-ghickness is unique and can be divided into three stages a, b and c. A retardation parameter has been used successfully to predict the growth of cracks in specimen, and in this time, retardation factor is 4.3. By using the crack propagation rule considering on retardation state and the K value proposed by the authors, the remarkable crack growth behavior and the change in crack shape can be evaluated quantitatively.

  • It is difficult to explain the effects of complex variable loading experienced by the machine and the structure only with the studies of the single-overload itself. Hence, it is thought that the variation of overload-holding time are required to explain the effects more clearly. The effects of the overload were analyzed by means of the crack retardation, and the fractography on retardation zone. A characteristic of the fractography on retardation zone was that striation distribution did not appear due to decreased crack driving force. Rotary bending fatigue tests were performed with the circular shaft which has two hole defects.

  • During torsional fatigue of externally cracked cylindrical specimen, crack face rubbing may occur. At this time, normal contact forces arise when shear displacements cause the crack faces to be wedged open due to mismatch of the fracture surface asperities. These normal forces, in turn, generate friction force which act in opposition to the applied shear stresses and reduce the effective stress intensity factor. The premise of the proposed work is that friction and wedging can be studied by measuring the shear and normal displacement across the crack mouth. We have measured the crack mouth compliance using the new biaxial extensometer.

  • Demand for now nondestructive evaluation are growing to detect fatigue crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments especially when they are In non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in fatigue and tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time-frequency analysis methods. The main frequency range is different in the noise and the fatigue crack propagation. It could be classified that it were also generated by composite fracture mechanics of cleavage, dimple, inclusion separation etc.
