This paper considers the sound radiation characteristics of a craked rectangular vibrating plate, varying the orientation angle of a line crack. The vibration response of the cracked vibrating plate is obtained by using ANSYS, the acoustic theory based on the lumped parameter model is used to calculate radiated sound power. The radiated sound powers are computed with varying the orientation angle of the crack: i.e, 0$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, and 90$^{\circ}$. It is found that characteristics of the radiated sound power are very closely related to the crack orientation, vibration mode and crack location.
This paper investigates the effectiveness of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, SWNT, in improving the dynamic behavior of cracked Aluminium alloy, Al-alloy, beams by using a method based on changes in modal strain energy. Mechanical properties of composite materials are estimated by the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka method. The influence of SWNT volume fraction, SWNT aspect ratio, crack depth and crack location on the natural frequencies of the damaged 3D randomly oriented SWNT reinforced Al-alloy beams are examined. Results demonstrate the significant advantages of SWNT in reducing the effect of cracks on the natural frequencies of Al-alloy beams.
In this paper, a crack sealing robot is developed. The crack sealing robot is built to detect, track, and seal the crack on the pavement. The sealing robot is required to brush all dirt in the crack out for preparing a better sealing job. Camera calibration has been done to get accurate crack position. In order to perform a cleaning job, the explicit force control method is used to regulate a specified desired force in order to maintain constant contact with the ground. Experimental studies of force tracking control are conducted under unknown environment stiffness and location. Crack tracking control is performed. Force tracking results are excellent and the robot finds and tracks the crack very well.
A composite element method (CEM) is presented to analyze the free and forced vibrations of a cracked Euler-Bernoulli beam with axial force. The cracks are introduced by using Christides and Barr crack model with an adjustment on one crack parameter. The effects of the cracks and axial force on the reduction of natural frequencies and the dynamic responses of the beam are investigated. The time response sensitivities with respect to the crack parameters (i.e., crack location, crack depth) and the axial force are calculated. The natural frequencies obtained from the proposed method are compared with the analytical results in the literature, and good agreement is found. This study shows that the cracks in the beam may have significant effects on the dynamic responses of the beam. In the inverse problem, a response sensitivity-based model updating method is proposed to identify both a single crack and multiple cracks from measured dynamic responses. The cracks can be identified successfully even using simulated noisy acceleration responses.
It is useful way to make indentations near crack tip in order to increase fatigue life or repair a fatigue crack. In this study, bending fatigue tests were performed to investigate the optimal position of the indentations near crack tip. The results shows that fatigue life of the specimen is dramatically increased by indentation and the most effective location is the back of the crack tip.
Within the framework of anisotropic thermoelasticity, the problem of an interlaminar crack in a laminated fiber-reinforced composite subjected to a uniform heat flow is investigated. Under a state of generalized plane deformation, dissimilar anisotropic half-spaces with different fiber orientations are considered to be bound together by a matrix interlayer containing the crack. The interlayer models the matrix-rich interlaminar region of the fibrous composite laminate. Based on the flexibility/stiffness matrix approach, formulation of the current crack problem results in having to solve two sets of singular integral equations for temperature and thermal stress analyses. Numerical results are obtained, illustrating the parametric effects of laminate stacking sequence, relative crack size, crack location, crack surface partial insulation, and fiber volume fraction on the values of mixed mode thermal stress intensity factors.
Free vibration analysis of helical spring with crack was studied. Natural frequency changes due to the crack was analyzed with respect to crack locations. The effect of crack on natural frequency was decreased as crack location is further from the fixed end of a spring. The frequency change was larger in rectangular-shaped spring than that in circular-shaped spring. It was found that experiment may not be appropriate to determine the presence of crack because no significant natural frequency change can be shown by experiment.
It is well known that the analytical vibration characteristic of a cracked beam depends largely on the crack model. In the forward analysis, an improved and simplified approach in modeling discrete open cracks in beams is presented. The effective length of the crack zone on both sides of a crack with stiffness reduction is formulated in terms of the crack depth. Both free and forced vibrations of cracked beams are studied in this paper and the results from the proposed modified crack model and other existing models are compared. The modified crack model gives very accurate predictions in the modal frequencies and time responses of the beams particularly with overlaps in the effective lengths with reduced stiffness. In the inverse analysis, the response sensitivity with respect to damage parameters (the location and depth of crack, etc.) is derived. And the dynamic response sensitivity is used to update the damage parameters. The identified results from both numerical simulations and experiment work illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.
