  • In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of fatigue fracture on TB(Tailored Blank) weldment by comparing the fatigue crack propagation characteristics of base metal with those of TB welded sheet used for vehicle body panels. We also investigated the influence of center crack on the fatigue characteristic of laser weld sheet of same thickness. We conducted an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on the base metal specimen of 1.2mm thickness of cold-rolled metal sheet(SPCSD) and 2.0mm thickness of hot-rolled metal sheet(SAPH440) and 1.2+2.0mm TB specimen. We also made an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on 2.0+2.0mm and 1.2+1.2mm thickness TB specimen which had center crack. The characteristics of fatigue crack growth on the base metal were different from those on 1.2+2.0mm thickness TB specimen. The fatigue crack growth rate of the TB welded specimens is slower in low stress intensity factor range (ΔK) region and faster in highΔK region than that of the base metal specimens. The slant crack angle slightly influenced the crack propagation of the TB specimen of 2.0+2.0mm thinkness.

  • Near-threshold fatigue crack-growth behavior at room temperature for a duplex stainless steel weldments was investigated to evaluate the effect of load ratio, microstructural change, and residual stresses. Near-threshold fatigue crack propagation behavior is found to show a marked sensitivity to .alpha./.gamma. phase ratio, and little residual stress effects. Threshold values in the heat affected zones are higher than those of base metals and threshold values for crack growth decrease with increasing the load ratio in the base metals and weldments. The fractrographic features in base metals, weldments and heat affectred zones were discussed in terms mechanism of crack growth.

  • This paper deals with surface crack behavior and the fatigue life prediction of notched specimens using the relation between surface crack length, a, and the cycle ratio, N/Nf. From the aN/Nf curves, UC(the upper limit curve), LC(the lower limit curve) and MC(the middle limit curve) were assumed and utilized to predict the fatigue life and crack growth rate. The data computed from the three assumed curves were compared with the experimental data. It has been found that in the stable crack growth region (N/Nf=0.30.8) fatigue life can be predicted within 20% errors. Using the characteristics of aN/Nf curve, it is possible to predict the da/dNKmax curve, the da/dNΔKεt curve, and the SNf curve.

  • The EMU wheel is one of the most important component for the vehicle safety. For the tensile, fracture toughness and crack propagation tests, several specimens were collected from actual wheels. FEM ,analysis also was performed on the crack that was assumed to be 15 mm in depth under the wheel tread surface. The stress intensity factors KI and KII at the crack tip under the stress (Pmax = 911.5 MPa) due to a rolling contact were analyzed for crack growth characteristics. As a result, the perpendicular crack was found to be more dangerous compared to the parallel one.

  • We got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at 25circC, 60circC, 80circC, and 100circC in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. And there is a difference between shot peened specimen and unpeened specimen. The purpose of this study is to predict the behavior of fatigue crack propagation as one of fracture mechanics on the compressive residual stress. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peened metal was lower than that of unpeened metal. The compressive residual stress made an impact on tension and compression of the plasticity deformation in fatigue crack plasticity zone. That is. the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.

  • Most of the welding steel plate structures have complicated mechanical problems such as rolling directional characteristics and residual stresses caused by manufacturing process. For the enhancement of reliability and safety in those structures, therefore, a systematic investigation is required. SS400 steel plate used for common structures was selected and welded by FCAW butt-welding process for this study, and then it was studied experimently about characteristics of fatigue crack propagations with respect to rolling direction and welding residual stress of welded steel plates. When the angles between rolling direction and tensile loading direction in base material are increased, their ultimate strength not show a significant difference, but yielding strength are increased and elongations are decreased uniformly. It is also shown that fatigue crack growth rate can be increased from those results. When the angles between welding bead direction and loading direction in welded material are increase, fatigue crack growth rate of them are decreased and influenced uniformly according to the conditions of residual stress distribution. In these results, it is shown that the welded steel plate structures are needed to harmonize distributed welding residual stress, rolling direction and loading direction fur the improvement of safety and endurance in manufacture of their structures.

  • High-cycle fatigue characteristics of quasi-isotropic carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates [-45/0/45/90]s up to 108 cycles were investigated. To assess the fatigue behavior in the high-cycle region, fatigue tests were conducted at a frequency of 100 Hz, since it is difficult to investigate the fatigue characteristics in high-cycle at 5 Hz. Then, the damage behavior of the specimen was observed with a microscope, soft X-ray photography and a 3D ultrasonic inspection system. In this study, to evaluate quantitative characteristics of both transverse crack propagation and delamination growth in the high-cycle region, the energy release rate associated with damage growth in the width direction was calculated. Transverse crack propagation and delamination growth in the width direction were evaluated based on a modified Paris law approach. The results revealed that transverse crack propagation delayed under the test conditions of less than σmax/σb = 0.3 of the applied stress level.

  • The objective of this work is to develop the capability to analyze accurately the mixed-mode propagation of a crack in composite structures with elastic orthotropic material stiffness properties and anisotropic material strength characteristics. We employ the normal stress ratio theory to predict the direction of crack extension. It is shown that the angle of crack extension can be altered by the use of second order term in the series expansion is important for the accurate determination of crack growth direction.

  • Antifatigue failure technology take an important part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, this paper the effect of compressive residual stress and corrosion of spring steel(SAE 5155)by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0.05)was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, We arrived at the following conclusions. The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peening material was lower than that of the un-peening material. And in stage I, ΔKth, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot-peen processed material is high in critical parts unlike the un-peening material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the shot-peening material was higher than that of the un-peening material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN. Finally fracture of shot-peening material and un-peening material was identified and discussed in this study.

  • Nowadays, many components used in machinery industry is required lightness and high strength. Therefore, the effects of compressive residual stress by shot-peening which is method to improve fatigue lift of spring steel (JISG SUP-9), which used in suspension of automobile, on fatigue crack growth characteristics was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.
