P-PIE is a program developed to estimate failure probability of pipes and pressure vessels considering fatigue and stress corrosion crack growth. Using the program, crack growth simulation was performed with an initially existing crack in order to examine the effects of initial crack depth distribution on the leak probability of pipes. In the simulation stress corrosion crack growth was considered and several crack depth distribution models were used. From the results it was found that the initial crack depth distribution gives great effect on the leak probability of pipes. The log-normal distribution proposed by Khaleel and Simonen gives lower leak probability compared other exponential distribution models. The effects of the number and the quality of pre-service and in-service inspections on the leak probability were also examined and it was recognized that the number and the quality of pre-service and in-service inspections are also give great effect on the leak probability. In order to reduce the leak probability of pipes in plants it is very important to improve the quality of inspections. When in-service inspection is performed every 10 years and the quality of inspection is above the very good level, the leak probability shows nearly constant value after the first inspection for an initially existing crack.
The fracture behaviour of concrete gravity dam mainly due to uplift pressure acting at the crack face was studied. Triangular type and parabolic type distribution of the uplift pressure including uniform type were first considered in case of calculating stress intensity factor(SIF) by the surface integral method. Second, the directions of crack propagation according to the uplift pressure distribution were pursued by FRANC(FRacture ANalysis Code). Third, critical crack lengths according to the uplift pressure distribution under the overflow depth were calculated. The SIF values obtained from the surface integral method were compared with those by FRANC and relatively good agrements could be obtained between both of them. And it could be seen that the direction of crack propagation in case of triangular pressure distribution was a little benter to the dam base than the one by the uniform type. Maximum critical crack lengths under the overflow depth were obtained at about 2/5-1/2 of the dam height.

Quantitative analysis have been carried out on the micro-cracks on the surface and into the depth of unnotched smooth mild steel specimen under cyclic stains by rotating bending fatigue tests. Some of the results are; (1) Cracks initiate at the early stage of fatigue life N$_{I}$/ N$_{f}$=10 to 20%, and propagate during the rest of fatigue life. (2) Coalescence of highly crowded small fatigue cracks of random distribution seems to induce the final fracture at higher stress level. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (4) The distributions of micro-surface crack length and depth show the composite Weibull distributions which are approximated to two straight lines separated by the value of transient region between stage I and stage II crack.k.k.
A fuel cell is an energy conversion device that converts a chemical energy directly into an electrical energy and has higher energy efficiency than an internal combustion engine, but solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) consisting of brittle ceramic material remains as a major issue regarding the mechanical properties as the crack formation and propagation. In this study, the stress distribution and crack behavior around the crack tip were evaluated, due to investigated the effects of the surface crack at the operating condition of high temperature. As a result, the difference of the generated stress was insignificant at operating conditions of high temperature according to the surface crack length changes. This is because, the high stiffness interconnect has a closed structure to suppress cell deformation about thermal expansion. The stress intensity factor ratio $K_{II}/K_I$ increased as the crack depth increased, at that time the effect of $K_{II}$ is larger than that of $K_I$. Also the maximum stress intensity factor increased as the crack depth increased, but the location of crack was generated at the electrolyte/anode interface, not at the crack tip.

In the life management safety evaluation of constructs base on a fracture mechanics, the size of defect is the very important parameter. ICFPD (Induced Current Focusing Potential Drop)technique has been developed for detecting and sizing of defects that exist not only on surface but also inside and interior of structural components. The principle of this technique is to induce a focusing current at an exploration region by a straight induction wire through which an alternating current (AC)flows that has constant amplitude and frequency. The potential distributed on the surface of metallic material is measured by potential pick-up pins that are settled on the probe. In this paper, this NDI technique was applied to the evaluation of surface cracks and blind cracks in plate specimens. The results of this study show that in the case of surface crack, the distribution of potential drop is varied with the inched angle of surface crack, and the potential drops in the crack region and the crack edge region are varied with the inclined angle and depth of crack. The distribution of potential drop for the blind crack is distingulished from that for the surface crack, and the potential drop in the crack region is varied with the depth of crack.

The thermal characteristics of concrete specimens were analyzed using cement paste specimens with artificial cracks. In order to understand the temperature characteristics of the specimen depending on the crack depth, the specimen was heated and the minimum temperatures of the specimens at which cracks appear were investigated according to the crack depth. It was confirmed that the surface temperature distribution of the specimen varies depending on whether the specimen is cracked or not, because of the single and multiple reflections of the incident energy. Furthermore, as the temperature distribution of the specimen reaches a steady state, the temperature data tends to decrease with the crack depth. Through the observation of the normalized temperatures, it was found that the temperature of the specimens obtained from this experiment reached a steady state after 10 minutes. At this time, the standard deviation of the normalized temperature is around 0.01 or less, and the temperature decreases linearly with increasing crack depth. This result is considered to be closely related to the area where multiple reflections occur in the cracked region. If the correlation between the crack region and the incident energy is analyzed for various specimens, it can be applied to the diffuse reflection of the light.
The present study was aimed at analysing the damage of a used gas turbine bucket after 39,500h of total service. Microstructures and cracks of service-induced bucket were observed. The crack might have initiated from the coating in the bucket surface by thermal fatigue and propagated into the GTD111 base metal. Maximum depth of penetration was 2.7 mm(full penetration) at the leading edge. Crack contains a lot of Cr-,Ti-,Al-oxide which will prohibit filling and wetting of insert metal. Depth and propagation direction of crack were accorded with centrifugal force and temperature distribution in turbine bucket. Present result will provide basic data for repair bonding process.

It is not clearly known how defects or inclusions of a low carbon steel affect a fatigue strength. We study this issue using SM15C materials. The investigation is carried out by a quantitative evaluation, and experimental findings are: (1) a fatigue limit of A series smooth specimen is 205MPa, and that of B, C, D series is 245MPa, 304MPa and 245MPa, respectively. (2) the fatigue limit varies with respects to the stress distribution I the vicinity of a defects and crack. (3) the micro hole creates a half-circular shape crack, while the hole depth is not critical to the fatigue strength, (4) considering the fatigue strength, the hole diameter is more significant than the hole depth, and (5) Fatigue limit of artificially defected specimen is lower than that of a flawless one (5-10%), however, there exist allowance size and depth of defect which don't get to influence at fatigue limit.
The objective of this study was to investigate features of transverse crack occurrence and propagation in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) when subjected to environmental loading. The finite element model of CRCP was developed and the element removal method was implemented to predict the crack propagation process. To investigate the effect of the type of environmental loading on the CRCP behavior and cracking aspects, the following three different cases were considered: (1) the temperature gradient between top and bottom of the slab does not vary and the constant temperature drop throughout the depth occurs; (2) the temperature at the slab bottom does not vary and the temperature gradient increases; and (3) the temperature between the mid-depth and the bottom of the slab is the same and does not vary and the temperature at the top decreases. The analysis results showed that the crack occurrence and propagation through the depth of the slab in CRCP were significantly affected by the type of environmental loading. The changes in stress distribution and displacements during the crack occurrence and propagation process could also be investigated.
Microcracks can rapidly grow and develop in high-strength steels used in offshore structures. It is important to render these microcracks harmless to ensure the safety and reliability of offshore structures. Here, the dependence of the aspect ratio (As) of the maximum depth of harmless crack (ahlm) was evaluated under three different conditions considering the threshold stress intensity factor (Δkth) and residual stress of offshore structural steel F690. The threshold stress intensity factor and fatigue limit of fatigue crack propagation, dependent on crack dimensions, were evaluated using Ando's equation, which considers the plastic behavior of fatigue and the stress ratio. ahlm by peening was analyzed using the relationship between Δkth obtained by Ando's equation and Δkth obtained by the sum of applied stress and residual stress. The plate specimen had a width 2W = 12 mm and thickness t = 20 mm, and four value of As were considered: 1.0, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.1. The ahlm was larger as the compressive residual stress distribution increased. Additionally, an increase in the values of As and Δkth(l) led to a larger ahlm. With a safety factor (N) of 2.0, the long-term safety and reliability of structures constructed using F690 can be secured with needle peening. It is necessary to apply a more sensitive non-destructive inspection technique as a non-destructive inspection method for crack detection could not be used to observe fatigue cracks that reduced the fatigue limit of smooth specimens by 50% in the three types of residual stresses considered. The usefulness of non-destructive inspection and non-damaging techniques was reviewed based on the relationship between ahlm, aNDI (minimum crack depth detectable in non-destructive inspection), acr N (crack depth that reduces the fatigue limit to 1/N), and As.
